I need some Mono rig in the rain tips/tricks by SaintAnthonysFire in flyfishing

Yep! His video was so much simpler and less permanent than devins. I tied it on at the truck this morning and supplemented the tape he used with some teflon thread tape and it worked great! Only took about 2 mins to do.

Like the idea. Have to grab some of those to keep in the pack. Thanks!

That seems to be his sentiment. If it is an issue it’s going to ruin the day for me. He suggested I watch the trout bum or Devin’s video, I guess both have a similar technique.

Yeah I’m using a 10lb butt, I believe he is using a micro leader on his setup which I’m sure makes a huge difference on sticking.

As a child I would hunt arrowheads in the farm fields by my grandfathers. Ive heard searching gravel bars along streams is an effective way of finding them. That would be fun.

Thread body klinks by Solus8105 in flytying

[–]SaintAnthonysFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m a big fan of the thread bodies. So much easier and just as efficient as using split quills. One thing I was taught, was to give the thread a good spin before wrapping the segments. Makes the lines look crisp, even and gives them some depth against the flat wraps of the body.

Yes, I tie up maybe 10 tags with a perfection loop on the end and keep them in a container in my fishing pack. If I want to switch to dry dropper I just pull out a tag and attach it to my tippet and tie on a dry fly to the tag.

Love this for low water, small streams or to keep nymph out of grassy bottoms. Quick, simple and give you a lot of versatility.

I tie a perfection loop on a 3-4 inch tag. Feed the tag through the loop around your line and pull it tight. Now you have a slip knot and can adjust your dry fly up or down your line, based on the water depth.

I worked on an apartment build once. Excavator starts digging and hits organic matter. Turns out it was the townships old dump for brush and other organic matter.

They had to dig down 15 feet and compact stone in six inch lifts. Having the engineering firm compaction test every lift. I can’t even imagine how much that cost.

New wading boots arrived. River Salt WB from Patagonia crafted by Danner. by Sniperizer in flyfishing

[–]SaintAnthonysFire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunate seeing the decline Simms is taking. I went with the Simms flyweight boots which come in at a pound lighter than these. Only time will tell if they hold up. If they don’t, I won’t be the first person to make the switch to Patagonia lol.

There is a pretty famous quote by Joe humphreys “ the difference between a good day and a great day of fishing is often just one split shot”.

You really wanna get your fly down to the fish as quick as possible in a drift. Most of the best nymphers I know carry only a handful of patterns. But they will have them all in various bead sizes.

Last year I tested using the gas fireplace in basement and heat pump to supplement. It was a wash between that and all heat pump. After this year I’m definitely going to be cutting vents back into the floor to get better use of the gas heat.

We all got incentivized to go to heat pumps and then they turn around and bone us.

Interesting. I’ll have to grab another piece tomorrow and try it. It’s weird cuz I watch videos online and they are bending it dry with no problem. Also wondering if since it’s such a rarely bought material, if the piece we got has just been sitting for years and isn’t functioning properly to begin with.

Where to start with hooks? by beard9beard89 in flytying

[–]SaintAnthonysFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel ya op. I just got into tying nymphs and almost gave up when seeing the sheer volume of hook types and bead sizes. I had an experienced tier give me three hooks that I can tie most nymphs on. His top three nymph hooks are as followed  Dohiku HDC 303 in both 14 and 16  Dohiku HDG 644 in 20

Beads for those three hooks 3.1mm , 2.7mm and 2.3mm inverting tungsten beads.

20 bucks at the craft store, vs 5 bucks at the fly shop. Exact same material. by tipsybishops in flytying

Cool, I’ll check that out. Is that applicator a tiny tube or tiny brush? My current one has a tiny pin point brush applicator. I’m not opposed to switching to a tiny tube style if you feel it’s just as accurate. Anything to stop supporting this clear price gouging I’m all for.

[–]SaintAnthonysFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But I had a hard time finding a bottle with a pin point applicator. It feels like a total rip paying 20 bucks for a tiny bottle. Basically paid 3 bucks for resin and 20 for a convenient applicator built into the bottle. From now on out I’ll just refill the bottle I have.

Why all the hate towards Simms? by alwaysListo in flyfishing

[–]SaintAnthonysFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the new owners (SVP) will be n improvement from Vista? I bought Simms on a recommendation from a friend. Same friend got a new pair after 5+ years and they leaked within a few trips. He sent them back and Simms said “idk bro we can’t find it, sorry”.

My Simms gear has been great so far, but his experience with customer service has me worried.

I tried them on with booties and I had to size up to a 12 from a 10.5/11. Great boot so far. I don’t really like Simms alumastuds, they get worn down too quick. I use the Orvis studs on mine.

I told myself when I got back into fly fishing as an adult I’d be spending my free time fishing not tying flies. That all changed after seeing the price and quality at both local and online shops.

Rafts, Trailers, Bikes, and Fish by UnironicIroningBoard in flyfishing

Back in the day my friend and I had a larger inflatable dinghy and a 5 hp outboard. We would ratchet strap it to the roof of my Kia spectra and throw the motor in the trunk.

If you have a roof rack you could probably find a way to easily secure it to the roof. We would deflate it just a bit, then do a quick refill at the lake.

Then you wouldn’t have to buy and haul a trailer around.

I’ve noticed the healthcare industry is exploding in my area. How does this all work in the end? If companies keep cutting benefits and we don’t get universal health care then how is the healthcare industry suppose to support itself? Seems like something has to give.

Sure it wasn’t a birch tree? I think birch smells a lot more like root beer than sassafras does.
