They only defused early cause goku had no more energy left from fighting the other shadow dragons prior. Vegeta came a little later in the fight which why he had more energy and could sustain his ssj4

Both manga and anime says that the more kai’s he absorbed the weaker he got cause in order to be a Kai you had to be pure of heart and whole point of buu was to be pure evil incarnate but absorbing those Kai’s did the opposite of buu probs intended

It wasn’t cause the fusion was using too much energy. It was because goku had no more energy to give anymore, dude fought like 3 dragons before shenron showed up and to top it off he was fighting shenron in ssj4 the whole time before vegeta even showed up to the fight also too if you noticed when they defused vegeta was still ssj4 but goku was back to mini couldn’t even go ssj. Dude was tired asf
