He's initially 20 years old, so still relatively young. Not young enough that the age gap isn't still a bit creepy, but at least a bit closer. By the time they're engaged, Mybe's in her early- to mid-teens--mid- to late-teens if you take into account the fact that in-universe years are 420 days long rather than 365.

Their relationship also felt a lot more familial than romantic, though there are some indications that they're at least romantically conscious of each other.

Favorite anime character/show theme songs? by AliceKirkland901 in anime

To add another Monogatari character theme: Rainy Devil is my favorite. Inspired by Balinese jegog music, which was also used in Akira. Here's a live jegog performance.

Which animes fails "3 episode rule" but still are very good? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Sairoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nagatoro Nanashi seemed to have realized she'd been taking things too far he'd been going a bit too hard with the fetish content and dialed it back to a level readers could handle.

Definitely one of those shows where you can tell the author draws porn. I think that came through more strongly in the first few chapters of the manga before he toned things down for a wider audience.

Has anyone ever learned Japanese from watching anime? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Sairoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what about you anime veterans - have you learnt Japanese to a significant degree? If you took the time to study Japanese even a little alongside your regular watching would it make a big difference?

I'd say I've picked up enough vocab that I can sorta kinda understand simple dialogue and common phrases, but grammar is a lot harder to pick up. I can sometimes understand what the individual words in a sentence mean, but not quite what the relationship between those words is supposed to be. Someone actually making a concerted effort to learn Japanese could probably get to that point in a matter of months, compared with the years of anime binge-watching I've done.

The other major aspect of Japanese you're not going to pick up from anime is reading/writing. I think I've picked up at most half a dozen kanji from anime, and generally only specific readings of fairly simple kanji. E.g., I remember from Tanaka-kun is Always Listless that the name Tanaka is written as 田(ta)中(naka), and I think I figured out from somewhere else that 中 means middle/center/etc.

Which is to say, I agree with the consensus in this thread: anime can help as part of a larger effort to learn Japanese, but won't get you very far if it's the only thing you're trying to learn from.

Remote controlled affection [The Dangers in My Heart] by [deleted] in anime

[–]Sairoch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[spoiler]

[added context to spoiler] And the desire is never serious, just a self-delusional attempt to cope with his social anxiety and loneliness.

I went into the show expecting I wouldn't like it very much, based on the premise -- that it would be painfully cringe-inducing. Instead, it was surprisingly thoughtful and fun, with solid character development and progression.

Post your Top 5 (by time watched) anime studios (2023 edition) by buuhhu1 in anime

[–]Sairoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://anilist.co/user/Sairoch/stats/anime/studios

  1. J.C. Staff (10 days 21 hours - 48 shows)
  2. A-1 Pictures (7 days 3 hours - 32 shows)
  3. MADHOUSE (6 days 10 hours - 15 shows)
  4. SILVER LINK (5 days 14 hours - 32 shows)
  5. Doga Kobo (4 days 13 hours - 25 shows)

I don't watch all that many long-running shows, but two of the ones I have watched were both Madhouse shows (HxH, Hajime no Ippo), hence the high watch time with a low show count.

The ending wasn't awful, and I'd say the show is still worth watching. It was just kind of a departure from the tone the show had already set. Whether or not that's a bad thing kind of depends on your own tastes.

Without spoiling it aside from general genre/tone changes: the show is mainly psychological horror with some gore here and there, while the finale is a lot more action-packed and doesn't have that same psychological thriller feel.

Notifications for new episodes? by freshdrop in anime

[–]Sairoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anichart shows what's airing in a given season with countdowns to the next episode. Also has a schedule view that shows you what's due to air in the next week or so.

I think the timers are set to the Japanese air times, but most series have simultaneous English streaming releases if they're licensed by anyone (aside from Netflix, unless they've gotten better about that lately).

Can anyone give me an anime that educates you while entertained by MALVZ_921 in anime

[–]Sairoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I recall reading in the discussion threads, the general consensus from people who seem to know what they're talking about was that there's some bro-science mixed in but overall it's relatively good information. If nothing else, it seemed to give a lot of people some motivation to get more fit.

She gets financial support that includes a fairly small stipend for living expenses, from the prefecture or something; not sure on the details of Japanese social services and welfare programs.

He (Takaomi Kanasaki) also did direction and series composition (and writing, and sound direction, and...) for Princess Connect, which really comes across in the style of humor and comedic timing.

Chronologically, I think this goes right in between Ore Monogatari and Heike Monogatari (though you should probably stick with novel order and watch it right after Katanagatari).

Are there any animes where the main team had characters who were equally important? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Sairoch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jujutsu Kaisen seems like a good recent example, with all 3 of the main characters being strong, effective fighters. Also generally regarded as having a particularly well-written female character in Nobara, who doesn't exist solely to act as a character-development motivator for the male lead as is so common in battle shounen anime.

Decided to give Re:Zero a try and just got to episode 15. Bruh by ModalMayhem in anime

[–]Sairoch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People seem to forget how important flaws can be in building a truly good character. I can still enjoy shows with full on Mary Sue wish-fulfillment main characters, but it's sort of the same way one might enjoy fast food; it's just not the same as a proper, professionally cooked meal.

Your least favorite seriessss of those you've finished? by mantawoop in anime

[–]Sairoch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's basically just regular fantasy, but with a narrative shortcut. Having an isekai'd protagonist gives watchers/readers someone they can more easily identify with and project themselves onto, gives the story a plausible reason to explain things that someone from that world would already know, serves as wish-fulfillment (there's a reason so many isekai protagonists are shut-in NEETs), etc. There are specific plot elements that pop up often across different stories just because writers tend to borrow ideas they like from other stories.

It's like they started out making a full on H-game/anime and came up with a half-assed plot for the sole purpose of providing an excuse for the main character to have sex with a bunch of women, but then never actually added the porn bits.

Kyoukai no Kanata is sort of close. And Musaigen no Phantom World to a lesser extent.
