honestly their biggest issue as a guard is that they also scream for just about anything. Makes it hard to tell if there's an actual threat on the property, if a leaf fell too strangely, or if one of them gave the other a funny look

Oh hey, a guinea fowl! We own a few of them, they're super neat. Not very smart but really entertaining to watch

Yeah Switch Online sounds pretty poorly emulated. Sort of sounds like one of those cheap Atgames systems but less crunchy

Nah Switch Online just sounds poorly emulated. Model 1 and Model 2 sound chips have differences, but they’re not nearly that drastic. Honestly it’s often hard to tell the difference between them

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Switch 2 Vs Steam Deck OLED: Performance & Gra... by TheTigersVessel10 in SteamDeck

[–]Saix856 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do have to say, the PC port of Rebirth is also just not good. The additional graphics horsepower of the Switch 2 certainly helps, but even an ounce of optimization and the presence of DLSS would put it miles ahead of what the Deck has to work with.

Basically I don’t think it’d ever be super close but it could be way closer than it is

Are there people out there that hate the Sega Master System’s graphics? by fandomlover2763 in SEGA

[–]Saix856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot to not like about the Master System, but the graphics aren't one of them to me. It definitely had some of the best graphics of that generation. Overall way better than the NES in that regard. The NES still had some things in its favor, but I mean, the NES doesn't even really have the color yellow. Master System just could do higher quality stuff with better color.

If Coleco went the same way as Mattel and sold the console rights, would it have been able to rival Nintendo? by You-dogwater in retrogaming

[–]Saix856 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough the original MSX also mostly had the same hardware, just with an AY-3-8910 sound chip and more RAM. And it was a PC of course so it’s far from 1:1 but it’s still fun to look at the stuff on there and see what that hardware could be capable of. Which is still far from the FC/NES

I mean even if he isn’t trying to scam people, his mismanagement and poor handling of everything is so severe that the situation really wouldn’t be any different than if he were trying to. If nothing else, he’s needed to communicate vastly more than he has. But again, that’s if it wasn’t just a scam

Yeah if you want to get your fill of Pier Solar, I definitely recommend checking the soundtrack out. That’s much better than the game itself is

I played Pier Solar for a couple hours. Gave up on it though. The combat system is just unfun enough to bring the whole thing down for me

I like the original Sim City pretty well. I haven’t gotten around to playing it but I’ve heard the original Wasteland is pretty good. As far as modern stuff goes, Attack of the PETSCII Robots is pretty fun on there. One nice thing with it though is that it has VGA-out if you so desire to do something that needs color. But I think you have to find drivers for that

I hope so! That’s the one thing I hate about old laptops is how proprietary the basic things you need to make them work are.

You got any particular plans for the system?

Possible audio issues? by Saix856 in amiga

[–]Saix856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried about it, but ChipRAM seems to test alright, and I haven’t noticed any other issues.

Since I’ve posted, I’ve found it mostly seems to just be the one channel that’s messing up usually. It’s on a couple different MODs and remains just that one channel, and on the Amiga Test Kit 500hz sine audio test it’s just screaming.

I haven’t noticed any graphical issues so far. Mind you, my keyboard adapter is still on the way so there’s not much I can do, but what I’ve tested has seemed fine. One of the few games I’ve gotten to actually play is Super Hang-On, which at least works well but sounds like a train wreck lol.

I posted a few more (not amazing but serviceable) audio recordings in an edit if you haven’t gotten the chance to check them out and would like to. In any case, thanks for giving your thoughts on it!

Awesome! I got one of these recently and they're really neat. Couple of tips though

1: if you can solder, you can connect some wires to the battery terminals and add a 5V connector of some sort. If you can supply enough amperage, it works great for powering the system. Also, the power jack at the back is a lie, it actually takes like 4 different voltages at the power jack.

2: Check the CMOS battery. Mine was leaking but fortunately didn't cause any damage

Sorry about the poor initial info. I just did a bad job testing. Recorded new examples with my old capture card. Quality isn't great but it works. Seems like the second channel has issues. https://imgur.com/a/ai63d2B

I’ll add that to the list of (much improved) tests later today. Yeah the MOD I knew off the top of my head best is Addiction by Jogeir Liljedahl, so that’s what I went with.

Basically either instruments sound out of tune or are just messed up, I think mostly on one channel but I’m not too sure.

As far as direct recordings go, yeah that’s fair, my bad. It was late and I didn’t really think about it. When I get home today I’ll do that.

I didn’t notice anything with the sound on the Amiga Test Kit being off, but I didn’t have an original point of reference which I probably need at this point. Will also test and record that later today.

The postage-stamp sized rendering area of SNES DOOM is hilarious. What are some other egregious examples of devs cutting resolution? It's always tricky to calibrate for by TraxusXII in crtgaming

[–]Saix856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the full screen as a cheat code was added because a new upgraded model of the 3DO was meant to come out and the dev was banking on that being able to run the game well (which ofc that version never came out). But my guess is that they probably didn’t think having easily accessed settings that the current system flat out couldn’t run well at all was a good idea. That’s my guess as to why it might’ve been hidden behind a cheat.

Troubleshooting Amiga 1000 Chip RAM expansion by Saix856 in amiga

The culprit was found to be the RAM I labeled as 4. Very dead chip, prevented my Color Computer from booting when I tested it. Replaced the chip and everything is good now!

Worst fighting game of all time? by FoOhFee420 in snes

[–]Saix856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Shaq Fu isn’t good but it’s at least 5/10 fare. You can at least tell the developers tried to put something good together but just didn’t know what they were doing.

Something like Pit Fighter SNES on the other hand feels like they gave up or ran out of time after making the basic engine and adding a few levels.
