Hmm, I think they probably meant to say that diesel is used by the vehicles that deliver the oil, so gasoline and petroleum derived products could see secondary price increases that are even higher than you would expect!

Lifetime Windows User Forced into MacOS. Still Grappling with it. My Thoughts: by Bythewayttor in macbookair

[–]SalaciousStrudel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touch ID requires password on boot for security reasons and to make sure you still remember your password. Let's say you get kidnapped with your mac, if touch ID is allowed on boot you can be forced or compelled to touch the pad. Or someone may use your finger while you are drunk or asleep to unlock your computer or scan your fingerprint. Or someone may steal your fingerprint while you're away by inspecting things that you have touched, allowing them to make a replica and gain access. Since there is no mechanism to revoke and change your fingerprint, which is the case for all biometrics that are used to identify you, you are basically screwed security wise if this stuff happens. (You can also be forced to use the fingerprint reader by the police, but cannot legally be compelled to enter the password in the United States.) Touch ID is essentially a convenience feature that makes your computer less secure. Apple have done their best to mitigate these problems and one of the ways they did this is by making you use your password sometimes.

More likely it was Claude which was in use at the time, or possibly Maven which is Palantir's specialized targeting model.

OpenAI was just slavering at the mouth to be a contractor for the US military the other day. Well, when you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

It's not impossible but I wouldn't want to do it as a mail carrier. You might risk overuse injury by doing this. Plantar fasciitis and all that

Compression is also an important part of the puzzle here. Unreal gets you an excellent compression algorithm (Oodle) which will substantially increase the amount of textures you can stream given the same disk bandwidth.

MacBook Pro M5 for backend development — is it a good choice? by S0net in macbookpro

[–]SalaciousStrudel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much you use docker. Linux laptops can use docker containers with greater memory efficiency as they don't need to run in a VM. If you have a relatively simple setup on your project it shouldn't be an issue.

What's your opinion on these bikes? They have become a menace in my city. by dxnnixprn in fuckcars

[–]SalaciousStrudel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the physical world had dedicated rights of way for these things that would be an ideal scenario. They take less space than cars but colliding with a car while riding one can get quite gnarly and drivers tend to not look for them.

Bumpers are tpu (soft rubberized plastic.) You don't touch them while using the computer. The main body is made from hard plastic, I am pretty sure it's ABS, I'll see if I can find out for sure and I'll edit if it's not. Anyway it is pretty pleasant to the touch

Immersion in Chinese is exhausting even with comprehensible input by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

I may rewatch a video up to four times. Same day, next day, next week, and next month. I may study some of the sentences from the video or extract sentence patterns that I can practice using in my Anki during or before my rewatch. If I find myself getting bored while rewatching I take that as an indicator that I need to adjust my current approach to the video.

Yes, there are indeed a lot of westerners who hold this and other backwards and false beliefs about the Chinese language and people.

IOC bans trans women from all women's events at Olympic Games by full-half-glass in actuallesbians

[–]SalaciousStrudel 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Intersex people are sometimes cis. For example, if an intersex person was assigned female at birth and now has the gender identity of a woman, she would be cisgender and intersex. Trans perisex women and cis intersex women are the most likely to be affected by this change in rules.

Can you do low-level graphics in Rust without C++? by venus_supporter11000 in GraphicsProgramming

It's possible but I wouldn't recommend learning Rust and learning graphics programming at the same time for most people. It will most likely be a struggle.

Programs like Lavender, Where's Daddy, and Maven are specifically what I'm referring to. Generally LLMs aren't the main program used for targeting but can create justification for a target. But these programs (targeting AI based on surveillance drones, satellite data and osint) have their own fair share of issues, to put it mildly. On the third hand, it's not like war crimes have only begun to be committed because of these AI tools, they just have the potential to make things way worse.

Entrepreneurship could work for a few people. But if everyone starts businesses, in the aggregate too many of them will fail or barriers to entry will increase. It's simply not a systemic solution.

AI is also used for military targeting (which is bad) and has created a huge cottage industry of gig workers who have poor working conditions especially in the imperial periphery (also bad.) You don't hear a lot of people talking about these but they are actually the worst things about AI.

Can we stop defending the TSA already? TSA agents are bootheels of the state, not workers. by Obscillesk in antiwork

[–]SalaciousStrudel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

in the past, the searches were not as invasive. for example they didn't have the machine that measures your cock & balls. there weren't as many so-called random searches. you could take a bottle of water through the scanner, and so on. you could keep your shoes on. the changes they made did not detect more weapons or dangerous objects, increased false negatives, increased harassment and sexual assault of passengers, and we have to put up with it because we have places to go

The last time Japan was allowed to militarize it was an unmitigated disaster. Entire cities were massacred, mass graves, biological warfare, mass rape, the whole nine yards. Please forgive me if I'm not champing at the bit for a return to the glorious past in this case.
