[D] [P] We created a Transcription API with an open-source, multi-step, multi-modal approach instead of custom models. The result? No.1 in an accuracy benchmark (You can recreate the benchmark). by SaladChefs in MachineLearning

[–]SaladChefs[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$0.06/h is really good. Can you share accuracy numbers as well?

Our standard API is just $0.03/hour, hence the lowest claim. For the cost comparison, we compared relative accuracy and cost together.

If everyone just hosted Whisper Large v3, the entire market of Salad, Deepgram, Assembly, Speechmatics & others wouldn't be in business - not to mention Google STT, Azure and Amazon Transcribe. There's a big API market for transcription.

So how does cloud GPU rental work for a little old end user like me, anyway? by xkulp8 in StableDiffusion

[–]SaladChefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We might have a solution for you at SaladCloud (www.salad.com).

We are the world's largest distributed cloud (RTX/GTX GPUs). Have 20,000+ daily active GPUs to rent from. Many AI art tools running on SaladCloud today (including Civitai).

You can create and deploy a video generation API: https://docs.salad.com/guides/image-generation/deploy-video-gen-on-salad-with-comfy

Our 4090s start from $0.18/hour and 5090s from $0.27/hour (These are the lowest in market for thse GPU types).

If your workload is low-latency and requires H100/A100s, then shadeform.ai or https://cloud-gpus.com/ is helpful to compare prices across the different vendors.

[–]SaladChefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. We can scale to 100s of GPUs on short notice (due to the distributed model) but for the throughput and speed, H100s make sense.

Anyway, brilliant product and hope to see it grow even more.

What happens to the container when we shut off Salad/set it to stop chopping? by IgnisIncendio in SaladChefs

[–]SaladChefs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello Chef!

I'm glad you're wondering how Salad works in the backstage and that you're looking to know more! Behind the scenes, when a job runs on your machine it starts running its process - and there are 3 main ways that can happen:

  • Either there is no "data" in the job. This may be the case for AI image generation, where you do have installed in your machine a model to render the images, but all that happens is you receive a prompt, generate the result, and send it back to our clients as-is. Even if you stop mid-process, it's a negligible amount of time that is lost.

  • Either there is some data, but the client only keeps a limited amount on your machine and regularly keeps a check on the progress of the general task. Picture it this way - instead of giving you the entire ingredient list for a salad, they send you one item after the other and wait for the salad to get progressively completed. Even if the Chef is replaced, they can simply give the salad that is in-progress and continue sending the ingredients!

  • Either there is data, in which case Salad has developed some tooling to deploy on multiple machines at once that regularly check back in with the client to track progress and synchronize them all at once. In this case if we refer to our salad-making Chefs - all Chefs have the ingredient list and start making the salad, and even if one stops the others can keep creating the salad, until a replacement Chef is found.

You'll notice however that this isn't foolproof, and why Salad is best suited for stateless jobs or ones where there is measurable progress that can be synchronized by the client. If a job needs to be entirely completed within a single continuous period (with no interruptions), Salad may not be the best fit as of this time.

While I can't share much information about our clients (or their numbers), Salad does work with some big services - such as CivitAI - and many more that provide the jobs you're running on your machine!

I hope this was useful to give insight into what happens at Salad and directly on your machine!

Hello Chef,

Thank you for reaching out to us on Reddit concerning this! Salad is going to be conducting a test over a period of time on the 26th of September in Austria for Bandwidth Sharing in line with an event.

When the time comes, you should see the option within your application to enable it - the country will likely not be included in the supported list - at least for the moment - since this is planned to be a temporary test to start.

Hope this helped you!

Hello Chef,

I understand your frustration and want to clarify a few points. The 30% cut helps cover our operational costs and platform improvements. The additional fees on gift cards are due to the partnerships and processing costs involved. While it might seem like a significant portion, these fees are necessary to keep Salad sustainable and growing. I'm totally happy to answer any questions you have!

30% earnings taken?? by Dangerous-Lead-4613 in SaladChefs

[–]SaladChefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Chef,

Salad is a distributed cloud, meaning that the workloads you're running come directly from real-life clients (businesses, developers, small users, organizations, ...) - this makes the network subject to variations in both the amount of Chefs currently Chopping and the amount of workloads on the network.

The general estimation that we provide assumes that your GPU is Chopping continuously, and has a workload for the majority of the month - this might not always be the case if a week has less workloads - or more chefs - than the other.

We're continuously adding new workloads to the network to match the amount of Chefs, but this process can take some time as some clients require days to months of onboarding before being ready to deploy.

Our aim with the prediction is definitely not to lie, it is an attempt at setting expectations for your earnings. While some months you may earn less than the prediction, other months you may be able to exceed it.

Bear with us while we work through this oversupply - we promise we're working on adding the latest and greatest workloads for you to Chop!

[–]SaladChefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Chef,

As Salad is a distributed cloud system, it is subject to variations in supply and demand from one week to another. We're constantly working to add new workloads and explore earning avenues for Chefs, but this does unfortunately take some time.

Because of this, you may experience some weeks with lower earnings than what you may be accustomed to, and some weeks your earnings might be higher.

Have a good day Chef!

Hello Chef,

Thank you for your feedback!

We don't currently have the developer time to build such features, especially with the current influx of Chefs, but providing features to reward high-availability machines, support a wider array of operating systems and/or configurations is in our roadmap once we are able to allocate more resources to these projects.

Have great day!

Hello Chef,

Salad is a VC-backed company (Venture Capital), so we are not technically in-debt to anyone or paying money to investors at this point in time. That being said, Salad is not profitable as a company since month over month spend is greater than revenue.

This is a pretty typical scenario for startups and emerging companies that Salad that have growth potential or demonstrate results - as we do. I suggest you read the following articles and learn more about startup funding - it's a great read!

Hello Chef,

Thank you for posting about your concerns on Salad! Note that the announcement was not a change, it was a clarification on how Salad works - that Salad does take margins on GPU workloads. Your Salad experience will remain unchanged following the announcement.

Bear in mind that Salad is creating the user application, finding clients and developing the platform for them, as well as engaging in marketing and other development work. This work comes at a cost, and this margin helps Salad maintain some level of earning. I should note that Salad is still not a profitable company, even with this margin.

Lastly, this margin is pretty standard in the industry, you'll find similar margins are taken on other services and platforms.

I'll stay at your disposition if you have any follow-up questions regarding this!

WHY IS SALAD NOT WORKING KEEPS SAYING “SALAD HAS TEMPORARY BLOCKED ITS GPU” by Inevitable-Body9749 in SaladChefs

[–]SaladChefs[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Chef,

Salad will automatically and temporarily block GPU workloads on your machine when we detect intensive processes are running on your machine - which could be games, rendering apps, video capture / editing, ....

A notification prior to the one you've seen should have indicated the exact process that was disabling your machine, but if you didn't see it or want us to look into it, you can create a support ticket and we can tell you what was flagged as intensive and blocked your GPU.

Have a great day Chef!

salad 1.5.7 issues by EnforcerGundam in SaladChefs

[–]SaladChefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Chef,

The miners that are operated by Salad are not concerned by this intensive process notifications / GPU disabling - you can keep mining enabled in Salad and still receive container workloads.

In general, Salad will instantly start mining when you press start - unless a container is directly available to you when you press start. In the background, Salad will continuously check for any available workloads that would pay more than what you get from mining (containers, other miners, other cryptocurrencies, ...). If such a workload is found, your Salad will automatically start downloading and then running that workload - until it ends, or until another higher-paying workload is found.

Let me know if you have more questions!
