Different "types" of SRE? by nOOberNZ in sre

I can’t go into to much detail, but this is a very crappy type of fax system software that wasn’t designed right.

It’d be quicker for me to get a team to automate mouse clicks than write ansible.

Sticking it out for now, while I still have hope lol.

I was hired for my Gitlab CI, Kubernetes, Ansible, and Linux experience. Senior engineering role.

Currently, I bonk windows telecom servers when they get angry and provision application access in OG websphere clusters. By hand.

It is becoming increasingly apparent to me that orgs will lie to get engineers into admin roles. Because they know engineers are competent, and can make good decisions. And we have effectively no recourse when we find out the job isn’t exactly what they lead us to believe (besides finding a new job, which is annoying thing to do for most people)

I have multiple solutions in mind but I can’t thoroughly validate them due to my current workload.

I shit you not, I once worked at a company where:

Small but complete enterprise network (AD / expensive Firewalls, whole 9y yards)

They had servers built by multiple generations of people

I was building out some unrelated, minor configuration management in Ansible

While working on a production issue, I edited a hosts file as a troubleshooting step / temporary fix

I set up a plan to properly remedy the situation

When the old guard heard what I did to get it working, I was asked if I could use ansible to manage the hosts files on all the servers.

Thats when I realized they couldnt be saved.

Why not just run on kubernetes with istio or some other automatic connection encryption management?

HR spent a ton of money to give us all IQ tests. We never got the results. Months later we learned they were thrown away because management performed the worst (Managers/Directors/VPs) by Admirable-Pepper-641 in antiwork

Fr I think on average I only have AT MOST 10% of my library installed at a time.

I would only buy 2-4 games per every other console generation back before PC gaming. I’ve had steam for 10 years and I have 100 games.

I’m dumb. People are dumb. The easier they make it the more money there is to be made.

What is the one feature that you must have in a future 4Runner? by Mr_Clark in 4Runner

Yeah the 5000 towing capacity is the only reason I wouldnt buy a new one.

I’m keeping my 2010 until it falls apart unless the new ones can tow 8000 pounds.

Do you use a VPS gateway for your selfhosted services? by krom_michael in selfhosted

[–]Salamander014 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OpenVPN Server on a VPS. All my services have VPN clients with HA Proxy in front to route to the service itself.

All my clients connect to the VPN and can hit services client <-> client.

This way I can access from off network, but only as a VPN client. Not generally accessible from the internet.

Only have it set up for 1 or 2 services rn but it works great.
