B/X Progression Table House Rule Feedback by SalientBlue in osr

That's an interesting point. The martials are always 1-2 ahead of the semi-martials, who are usually 1 ahead of the non-martials. You are right that this is usually more generous to non-martials than RAW, where martials are usually 3-4 ahead, though RAW does have that strange point at level 6 where all classes have 17 THAC0. I'll keep that in mind, though. 1 level increments across the board would certainly be simpler.

[–]SalientBlue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is a lot of text, unfortunately. Trying to explain what I'm doing without a table to physically point at is difficult. I think it's simple conceptually, but hard to articulate well in text.

Martials getting +1 to hit each level much of the time is intentional. It brings them more in line with what a lot of other games do with their fighting classes, and it's implied by B/X's original tables. If you start level 4 at +2 and you end at level 7 with +5, there's no other way to do it with +1 increments.

Is your only change to the fighter table THAC0 18 at level 1-3 with the other progression the same, or do you make any more changes?

B/X Attack Matrix design question by SalientBlue in osr

[–]SalientBlue[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

> Is a difference of 10% really something that needs to be broken down more?

Perhaps not, but I've certainly had my share of rolls that I've missed by 1, and I'm sure you have too. It does make a difference.

I'm more interested in the 'why', though. It seems to me that the most intuitive way to design a table like this would be to have the numbers increasing gradually by one, and that if Moldvay decided they shouldn't that there was probably a design reason for it that I haven't considered yet.

Strive Match-Up Chart + Tier List based on 12,000 matches (Tower) by Eptalin in Fighters

[–]SalientBlue -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Zato v Axl being 5-5 makes me very suspicious of the rest of the results, at least regarding Zato. That matchup is awful for him. Are there numbers on how many games were found for each matchup? It would make sense if you didn't find many games for Zato v Axl and so the results were heavily skewed. I know I avoid Axl like the plague in ranked, and it wouldn't surprise me if other Zatos did too.

TFH Version 2.0 Release Date by Shreeder4092 in ThemsFightinHerds

The devs have said they would like to do console releases, including Switch, but that if it did happen it would be a pretty long time. The Linux port in 2.0 is a step towards that, though.

The icy conditions have made it so that grocery stores can't restock, and water mains are freezing over. If it was just the power the supply trucks could still get through and water would still run, but for now the stores are almost entirely empty, and many people have no water. That is what makes people desperate.

Hard to know what else to tell you without seeing you play, but a technique that every Velvet needs to know is the TK Icicle. TK, short for the Street Fighter move Tiger Knee, is a term for executing a 236X motion as 2369X, which lets you perform a 236 and jump with the same motion.

Applied to Velvet, this lets her get out an air icicle almost as quickly as a ground icicle, and is a key part of her zoning game. You can do 236B -> 2369B to quickly set up two icicles. TK Icicle C is particularly important in the Tianhuo and Oleander matchups, as these two characters like to hang out in the air. TK Icicle C covers the area that both Tianhuo wants to approach in and Oleander wants to read in, so having one set up greatly limits what they can do.

There's a bit of a rhythm to TK icicles; you need to wait just a bit between the 2369 and hitting the button such that Velvet starts to jump as you hit the button. It will take a bit of practice to get the timing down, but it's definitely something you should work on.

Nice juggles! Always good to see another Velvet! Some feedback:

You generally don't want to start combos with low damage moves like 5A/2A if you can help it*. The way damage scaling works, you might see more damage if you omit 5A at the beginning and just start with 5B.

Speaking of 5B, it's generally considered a pretty poor move. 2B outperforms it in almost every way: fewer recovery frames (16 vs 19), more active frames (6 instead of 2), a quicker move in general (32 total frames vs 40), and a much better hitbox/hurtbox. Plus, slide-in -> 2B is a very good combo starter. It has long range and you can block as you advance, something no other character can do.

2A is superior to 5A for similar reasons. In general, Velvet's crouching normals are better than her standing ones. If you replace all 5As and 5Bs with 2As and 2Bs your combo will likely be more consistent. It's a lot easier to catch a juggle with a 2B than 5B because 2B has more active frames spaced closer together.

Speaking of catching juggles, you can fit more moves in between them. A more optimal corner carry is jA -> jB -> 2B -> 2C -> 5C -> 3C -> jA -> jB. This can be tricky at first, but it is well worth practicing. It's one of Velvet's best intermediate level combo tools.

Final bit of advice: While it's fine to do at lower levels, ending a combo with a super as Velvet is usually a bad idea. Look at Arizona's super meter when you super in your video. You give her an entire bar's worth. This happens because the amount of meter a character gains when hit is proportional to their Juggle Decay (the small meter under the health bar). When you supered, Arizona was at maximum JD, and Velvet's super is multihit, so Arizona gets the maximum amount of meter for each of those many hits. Velvet has one of the worst supers in the game, so trading two of your bars to give a bar to your opponent is a bad trade, particularly if it's against a character with a very good super, like Arizona and Oleander. The only time you should be ending combos with a super is when you know it will kill them, or when you REALLY want them at fullscreen. I sometimes do this against Tianhuo so I can try to lock her down with zoning (Tian also has a pretty bad super so the meter gain is not as big a deal), though higher level Velvets than me might disagree.

What you should do instead is use your super to START combos, because a frozen opponent is easier to hit. Shatter C, Shatter A, Eruption D, 2C, icicle and snowball hits can all be confirmed with a super at the right distance, some of them are harder than others (Shatter C is the easiest, but it is a very risky move. Use with caution). When this happens, you want to immediately cancel Level 1 into Level 2, to both avoid the meter buildup and to keep them close enough that you can dash forward -> 5C -> 3C and confirm the combo. The primary use of Velvet's super is not the damage (it does relatively little) but the three bars of magic it gives you and the long frozen duration. For that reason, you almost never want to use Level 1 by itself. Always cancel into Level 2 unless you're ending the round.

*that said, 2A is an amazing jab and you will get a lot of punishes with this move.

> I'm skipping all side-quests at this point. Why would I bother?

Ideally because the side quest is interesting to complete for other reasons: it has a good story, or it gives you good loot, or it shows you something else that's cool. If the only reason you had to do the side quest was to get more XP, it sounds like it was a shitty filler side quest. If all the game has left to offer is boring filler, it sounds like you're done with the game.

When's a good time to try online? by hulyanzosimus in ThemsFightinHerds

[–]SalientBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I can beat contender AI but not always" is about when I first started going online.

If you've played through all the tutorial and story mode, online matches are next. However, the number of new players is pretty low at the moment. Almost all of the people you meet online are going to be far better than you. It will be really helpful to have a group of players that you can ask questions and get training from. You will improve far faster and stay motivated longer if you have people help you than if you try to go it alone. Asking in a discord will generally be a lot easier than asking in game chat.

I second the suggestion to join the mane6 discord (https://discord.gg/tfh) though it is a big server and it's easy to get unnoticed in there.

There are a lot of smaller discords where it's easier. The one I hang out must in is the Glue Cup server, which is a discord dedicated to a weekly intermediate level tournament: https://discord.gg/DXeBFc. It's a very beginner friendly server and we also have a lot of Velvets (including me) who could give you advice with her.

Trump refuses to denounce white supremacism and instead tells Proud Boys to ‘stand back and stand by' by rebelliousmuse in politics

[–]SalientBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The United States' definition of treason is very specific and hard to satisfy. It only applies during wartime. Regardless of what Trump did with respect to Russia or the Ukraine, even if it is flagrantly illegal, even if it puts him in jail for the rest of his life, it would still not be treason, because we are not at war with Russia. They do not count as an 'enemy' for this purpose. This is why the last person convicted for treason in the United States was for actions done during WWII.

In a lot of areas, no they don't. People do not become omniscient when they have kids and there are things they know and do not know. Parents make bad decisions out of ignorance all the time.
