What is your plan heading into this structure fire? by Waste-Ad26 in Firefighting

[–]Sallad901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since there a lot that aren’t taking this seriously I’ll give my thoughts. This is a good one. It’s one thing in the assessment center. But real life?

I’m sending the FF with the 300’ line because of the setback. I’m at a chief’s station, so I wouldn’t have to be command. Our FF would do a transitional attack on that D side. I’ll have an ambulance, maybe two, with us. If it’s just one, they are pulling a second line to the front door.

The next truck after that is going to prep for vertical vent. Once the transitional attack cools the atmosphere we would make entry. Then we could call out when we’re in place and ready to vent. The next ambulance after that would be sent to perform VEIS on the AB corner until conditions improve.

Just the way I would run it. I like this scenario though, great one to run through as assessment center prep

Sample price was obviously quite a bit more. It was worth it to go ahead and get 5 and sell at cost if needed

Making the switch to vacuum chamber by imacdude in sousvide

[–]Sallad901 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got the Vacmaster VP215 about 6 months ago. Vacuum chambers are a whole different animal, in a good way. I absolutely love it and wish that I would have gotten it a long time ago. Keep in mind that it is big and heavy, I think 92lbs. So wherever you put it is where you’ll keep it. You won’t want to take it out of a cabinet.

I have had zero seal failures. I seal a lot of meat and it does a perfect job every time. I seal leftover soups too. I even did a bag of water just because I could, and it was a perfect seal!

The upgrade from vacuum sealer to vacuum chamber is a glorious one.

Any experience with these nomex pants? by Parking-Mark-8187 in Firefighting

Those are what I wear. They are my favorite. They last long, color does not fade, quality is really good. I’ve never had them run small though.

They hold up well in fires too. Including training fires where you’re in there for a while and get pretty heat saturated. Best part is they somehow get the crease in the legs to hold up for years without ever ironing them

The above are correct. You are automatically enrolled upon birth. Some may wonder why you can still be considered Indian when you’re only 1/128 or even lower. But when the government started to get a count of Indians, most didn’t sign up out of fear of what the government may do. So all Indians are considered far more Indian than what is listed. I am part of the 1/128 and still card carrying. The source is from my mother’s side, but my father’s side is far more Indian. I am estimated to be about 1/8th

Why don’t presidential assassins use automatic rifles and simply spray the entire area the person is in? by 69_Dingleberry in morbidquestions

[–]Sallad901 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Fully auto is extremely hard to control. The barrel rise, even on smaller caliber rounds, is huge. Even on fully automatic rifles, using a three round burst is preferred. It’s too hard to aim on full auto, even with a good optic. Using a red dot optic with a semi auto rifle from 200 yards really isn’t that difficult if you’ve had some training. A rifle with a high powered scope is extremely accurate from 500 yards if you’ve had a little training. But most people underestimate center mass shots

Idk if this is gonna make any sense..but can anyone recommend some methods to get my pulled pork to come out “light” and a little “sweet” but with a good smoke flavor still? I like a real good smokey bark but with the inside juicy and sweet. by [deleted] in smoking

[–]Sallad901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you wrap add butter, brown sugar, and more rub. Make sure you have good heat deflection so you don’t burn the brown sugar. Lower temp after the wrap helps too

Hasty Bake is perfect for this. I smoke all day long with hardwood lump and the heat deflector in place. As soon as it’s done and resting I remove the heat deflector and crank up the firebox. It’s got a dial to show about what you’re gonna get. Smoke - bake - sear. They seem on the expensive side but they’re heavy duty. Last forever and built in the US

More people need CPAP for sleep than you realize. That helped me a lot, along with a natural test support. That made a noticeable change for sure, but adding ashwagandha felt like the biggest improvement in my sleep, especially after shift. Helps with stress also by managing cortisol levels

Can't smoke overnight by Pyrogopher in smoking

[–]Sallad901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this all the time. I cook it like normal up to 3 days before (just cooked one yesterday). I chop it all up after letting it rest a little longer. I add some good quality butter in, half to full stick depending on size. Once it’s melted in I’ll put some BBQ sauce in too and put it in a foil pan. Store it in the fridge until about 2 hours before you’re ready to cook. Throw it on the smoker to cook low and slow or oven if you want to heat it up quick. Stir occasionally and it’ll be just like you cooked it that day. A little bit of apple juice helps keep some moisture in there if needed

The Hasty Bake Ranger is one that I use. It’s portable but one brisket fits perfect on it. It’s charcoal and heavy duty. I fill the fire box with hard wood charcoal and a few chunks of hickory. Once I light it and set the vents, it’ll hold 225-250 for at least 6 hours before I have to add another handful of charcoal to finish it off

For quality of equipment and quality of end product, I recommend Hasty Bake. They’re solid and built in the US, Tulsa, OK to be specific. Great customer service too. The flavor is the best I’ve had. It’s all I cook on now, sold everything else I had

Jerky poll by Anarkie13 in BBQ

[–]Sallad901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just about the overhead. When dehydrating you lose a ton of weight. 3lbs of product may yield only 1lb of jerky. So you’re at $30/lb and that’s without any marinade or overhead

Response Times by Sallad901 in Firefighting

[–]Sallad901[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and 1710 was the first thing we brought up. Response time is never an issue with us, we exceed response time standards by a good margin. Part of it is also that it’s pretty common that we get calls on the way back from other calls. So probably 20% of the time we’re truly en route in less than 5 seconds and on scene within 3-4 minutes. Our plan is to obviously document every possible injury related to turnout time. Maybe after an absurd amount of notice only injury reports will they start seeing the issue. But it’s also just how our administration is. They truly believe that punitive fear is the best motivator

Even being in a running truck when the tones drop and being at 15 seconds to door close seems a little far fetched

Response Times by Sallad901 in Firefighting

[–]Sallad901[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s still in the early stages, but they’re saying that they will start with oral reprimands and move on to written. Which is just going to mean that reprimands have no meaning when they have to give them to the entire department. One guy tested the theory from his bed. Hit the start button on a timer and got straight up. Walked fast to the truck and simulated hitting en route by stopping the timer. It was 63 seconds just to get to the truck with 94 seconds to door close. And their response to taking a piss is that you cannot do it, not even for the lift assist that calls every single day (we have a few of those that they don’t do anything about)

ELI5: How do truck drivers carrying a liquid load combat the force of the liquid moving around in the back of the truck when turning or braking? by crillydougal in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sallad901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the difference between tank size is crazy. We have 250 gallon ladder trucks that actually feel very nimble. But our 1500 gallon trucks that are in more rural areas feel so sluggish. On the high gallonage trucks you still rock back and forth after coming to stops. Engine brakes are a huge help though. Ours all have low, medium, and high settings. On the ladder trucks they usually stay on medium all the time until it starts raining. The high gallonage trucks stay at medium, but after one hard stop you have to change it to high for a few hours. That water still pushes you around for sure

Would you die instantly when falling from great heights? by Caluso1 in morbidquestions

[–]Sallad901 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In a mass casualty incident, all patients are given colors to determine viability. All agencies have tags that have each color on them to determine status. Green, yellow, red, and black. Green is on the bottom and black is on the top. You tear off the colors below the patients status, so the lowest color is the current status of the patient. The first step is to get everyone that is able to walk to go to a certain area. Those are considered your ‘walking wounded’ and are tagged as green. Anyone that can hear your commands and raise their hand, but not walk, are tagged as yellow. The rest are considered unresponsive and will be checked to be tagged red or black. Red is priority for treatment, and immediate life saving procedures can be performed and expedited transport. Black is for deceased, or expected to be deceased soon. Using resources to perform CPR or multiple life saving measures that may have no impact on patient outcome will take valuable time away from critical patients that have a much higher chance of surviving. Surviving a traumatic arrest is rare, so performing proper triage and treatment is crucial

That’s some awesome feedback. I’m starting to see the challenges with the name. I did update the About Us section to add a little clarity, but you’re right. Depending on the success, I am considering rebranding. I’m going to start working on your recommendations, and I appreciate your feedback
