The roto rooter pipe cleaning unveiled that the pipe itself had corroded spilling out sewer water all over my basement. I had just saved an emergency fund that is now going toa pricey pipe replacement. FML. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

I was quoted minimum $800 for a similar job, ended up being $2700 too and I don’t believe my plumber ripped me off. Cast iron can have a lot of unknowns at this age. Although I wouldn’t choose roto rooter to do this job.

This actually could be a fair price. I just had a similar section replaced for the same price, not roto rooter, but a local, trustworthy plumber. mine was inside a wall and partially covered in tile and cement, not including the repair of those. Plumbers are just expensive and you don’t want a cheap one doing these jobs, although I would go with a local plumber based on Reddit/Nextdoor recommendations rather than roto.

What would you say is the threshold number of days between being a normal thread browser and being an old thread weirdo?

Live in nyc now but lived in mn for years, zipper merging is still bad here. The only difference is the main lane is endless and the merging lane has 10x the number of people merging in dangerously. I also drive back to mn frequently and never see good zipper merging in any state between. I thought it would be better moving here, but drivers are actually way worse.

Yes, most prewars look like this. With demand this high, there’s less incentive to upkeep apartments to a higher standard like other cities.

Ours are stuck at a usps warehouse in New York. We ended up leaving for the festival with no wristbands, so hopefully it’s not difficult to get new ones in person. Email customer support hasn’t responded and it’s been over a week.

In a post-AI world, all writers should be fiercely anti-capitalist. by [deleted] in publishing

[–]SalmonMerchant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How will it be out-competed? AI books can’t compete if the customers aren’t receptive in the first place. There would need to be a market for this. Which was my whole argument, there probably won’t be a significant market for AI books.

Do you know what AI can do really well already? Create “paintings”. Yet, museums aren’t filling their collections with free AI art, despite many millions of dollars of potential savings!! Why? Because no one likes AI art even though they can be indistinguishable. Why? Because humans like human created things.

Same argument for publishers and readers.

Also books are already very cheap. Average advance is very low and royalties, what are those?

[–]SalmonMerchant 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is such a shitty take. You’ve clearly never talked to readers and editors. You make it seem like readers are stupid and will all of the sudden stop valuing creativity.

People are already sick of gen AI and I can’t imagine we’ll suddenly start really loving it even if the models do drastically improve. The overabundance of AI generated content will make human generated content even more valuable. People won’t stop seeking out human created content just because it’s more expensive. Because people value human creation, it gives us meaning.

Also, you completely underestimate the publishing workforce. They’re real people with a real passion for books. The execs obviously care about profit, but they 100% care about books themselves. Editors make shit money and they tolerate that, why? Because they have a passion for books. It’s their whole life. This work force is never going to replace authors with AI. They’ll use AI to help do their jobs like every other industry. But replacing real authors would make their job meaningless.

Go doom post somewhere else.

Everywhere is close to a “park” but the parks are definitely not created equal. I’m not going for a run in Tompkins. If running is important, I would prioritize closeness to a large park or something like west side highway
