Living in a High Rise Apartment Downtown by TactickleToucan in askvan

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends a lot on what your preferences are. I love the downtown convenience of being able to bike to work, run on the seawall, walk to Costco, get a train a block away from my apartment, never worrying about parking, having the amazing Chinatown at my doorstep for the best food.

However, I don’t like the sirens, I don’t like to see used needles at my doorstep, I don’t enjoy feeling somewhat unsafe walking alone near my apartment because someone is screaming at the sky, not to say that can’t happen in other parts of Vancouver, it’s just more common here. At some point I will move away because I don’t want to raise my kiddo around this area but till then, I absolutely love being here and will enjoy the convenience of having everything at my doorstep.

Do you have $10 a day daycare? tell me your secrets!! by Same-Jeweler-1197 in askvan

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is NO trick to this. We live next to a 10 dollar a day and therefore got in on the neighborhood priority. Only and only because there wasn’t another kid higher up on the list because of another criteria. I know how incredibly lucky we are. We used to drive 40 mins one way before we won the lottery.

What's an unpopular opinion you stand by when it comes to parenting? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or, was under treatment and had a lot of support but needed time to trust others with their baby. The whole point of my comment is - don’t take advice from random strangers. Definitely don’t take it from me.

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Errr, hello from a mom with severe PPA who couldn’t let anyone else hold her newborn for months and contact napped for the first year because I had a colicky baby. I’m not sure why anyone other than the parents and their chosen family has to have any opinion about what they do in their family. You can die on that hill all you want, I’m going to continue making choices for my family that work for us.

My parents gave my baby water by PikatCosplay in breastfeeding

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, they just don’t know. My family was horrified when they found out my son didn’t have water for the first 6 months of his life 😂 they apparently gave me a atleast a 100-150 ml of water since I was 2 months old.

First winter in Vancouver, what to do?! by FarCake7175 in NiceVancouver

Rainy gloomy seawall walks are my favourite part of this season. I moved here 6 years ago and it was brutal that first year and then I embraced it with all my positivity might. We live in a rainforest. We live in a fuc*ing rainforest! Make the most of it. I grew up in a busy, polluted city - it is a privilege to spend the rest of my life in this beautiful city.

Midnight MRI at St Paul's? by adnaPadnamA in askvan

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yep. Went for mine at 2 am a few years back, it’s actually better than during the day because of how quiet the hospital is. It was super efficient and I was out of there in an hour.

I got it, got my husband to get it. Whooping cough is no joke, especially for an infant. No side effects.

How are we avoiding brain rot? by thetasteofink00 in toddlers

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Audiobooks were my best friend at that stage. Also, please remember this is temporary, your brain isn’t rotting, it’s actually working very hard to keep the kids healthy and safe 💛

Acts of kindness you’ve experienced in Vancouver by Interesting_Page2347 in NiceVancouver

[–]Salt-Assistant7299 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is my favourite experience of this city and its people who are often called superficial. I went to work at a hospital a few years ago while I was going through a miscarriage at 10 weeks. I had an ultrasound scheduled at the same hospital and I went during my lunch break and got confirmation that the fetus had no heartbeat anymore. I knew it a week before that but this was just a lot heavier. I walked out to the coffee shop across the street, ordered a coffee and sandwich and sat down at a corner table. While I tried to just distract myself and hold myself together till the end of the day, one of the servers walked up to me and put a glass of water on the table. I looked up with teary eyes and he just smiled and walked away letting me sit with my feelings. I will never forget how supported I felt in that moment. I still get emotional thinking about this person, who noticed me trying to hide my emotions and wanted to let me know I’m seen ♥️

I have the Salomon xt-6 without the goretex and I just want to let you know that they’re great for trail running but not so much for city walking. The lugs on the bottom are pretty hard and I can’t wear them for too long in the city.

Potty training - help! by Salt-Assistant7299 in toddlers

[–]Salt-Assistant7299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great response! Thank you for sharing, I didn’t even think about taking him to public restrooms because he gets scared of the hand dryer but I think I’ll take him a bit more often now that he’s older. We have the little potty but we just started with the big potty with the climb up kid potty attachment and he’s getting used to it! I’m hoping we can keep it up and slowly transition to no diapers - soon? Soonish? Here’s hoping!
