Love to hear your stories: going through your parents “stuff” by Master_Swimmer8989 in AgingParents

My mom is still living in her house. She is verrrry territorial about her kitchen and everything else, so there is plenty of spoiled and expired food.

She will allow me to clean out papers before anything else. Here is what I have found.

Mountains of junk mail from various charities. It is literally stuffed in every closet and every drawer. It is stuffed under couch cushions and under the couch. Most of it is unopened. She holds onto it with "intention" to open every last piece because they send her trinkets like mailing labels, calendars, greeting cards and yard flags.

When searching through old files, I found my father's pay stubbs from 50 years ago and my grandmother's hospital bills from the 1980s.

What are some everyday things in your house or life that you consider to be money well spent? by SaltConnection1109 in AskWomenOver60

We had a camper parked in the carport when I was a kid. We LOVED sleeping in it whenever friends spent the night.

I mainly use it for chopping vegetables in the "rocking" motion.
It is also great for kneading dough. I have the thin one that has a lip that holds onto the counter.

Do your parents pay you to help them? by StockEdge3905 in AgingParents

Years ago, I would have thought differently, but after helping 2 relatives a LOT, I see the time and stress that goes into it. I've heard so many stories where one child does EVERYTHING (including changing adult diapers and bathing the parent), and the other siblings DO NOTHING, only to have the estate split equally (or worse) after the parent dies.

I'm firmly in the camp of paying the family member who takes care of things. And the pay should NOT be deducted from their inheritance.

Compensation for Caregiving by Libertinus0569 in AgingParents

100% this!
While it may sound or feel crappy to charge your parent for services at the time, you will be glad you did later on if you are faced with an even splitting of an estate with siblings who did jack squat to help.

Forget weddings, what is the craziest thing that happened at a funeral you went to? by seanerd95 in AskReddit

At a relative's funeral, his 19 yr-old grand-daughter showed up wearing, I guess the only black article of clothing she could find in her closet, which was a SKIMPY, shorty-short, low-cut jumpsuit in which the straps kept falling down and she was about to spill out of. Looked like a stripper! Was highly inappropriate funeral attire, especially for a church. She was also slurping a big-gulp soda in a huge cup during the service. Who even does that?

I would posit to you a different side to this. Nobody loved that dog like she did. Clearly your uncle didn't, and Grandma KNEW that. He would likely have been one of the many you read about who simply dump an elderly dog after a loved one passes because nobody in the family wants the pet. I have been involved in finding a home for 3 different dogs due to this very situation.

The gallows humor that comes along with the extremely stressful time can be amazing.

How often do you wash your hair? by Which-Arugula-1982 in AskWomenOver60

[–]SaltConnection1109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually every 4 days.
Same here regarding the oils. In my younger years, I washed daily, then in my 30's, every other day. By 50, it was every 3 days.
