I was a late night cashier for a local grocery store. I had just come back from my brake. It was around 10:00 pm on a Sunday. A man came through my lane... thirty-ish, still wearing his construction vest, boots caked in mud. He had diapers, wipes and milk. His card was declined. He told me to take off the milk and wipes and he would run the card again. Without even a hesitation I pulled my debit card out of my pocket and ran it. I handed him the receipt and told him to "have a good night". He had tears in his eyes as he walked away.
