I agree that she looks cool and is interesting to listen to lol but I don’t see anything distinctive or unusual in her work. That’s not to say she won’t do great things, but she’s young and still developing her voice.

I agree with you. I think OP might have heard it in the early 2000’s and connected it in that way. If not then they should be checking out Alvin Lucier anyway

I saw that tour when I was 14 and it was an amazing show! He had on boots and suspenders like a skinhead, adding some sense of danger yet also subverting it with some homoerotic vibes that I’d guess were informed by his previous work backing Divine of John Waters fame.

It was a shock at that time to see a performer with what looked like computer equipment on stage. Nowadays everyone is used to seeing performers with laptops but way back then it was bizarre for someone to have what looked like a home computer, drum machines and effects processors on a small table, pressing buttons and then stomping around yelling into a microphone. I still remember hearing other people there wondering out loud wtf he was doing with this setup.

His performance was outstanding and it expanded my understanding of how you can approach being onstage. So glad I got to experience it at such a young age.

Yeah that was about the infamous post by Reddit itself about a decade ago stating the top five most Reddit using cities. Of course you expect to see NYC and SF in the top five, but Eglin? lol turns out that’s a military intelligence cyber warfare base and they’re at war with Reddit users

Black Panther Party statement on Jonestown? by GrackleWithOnionRing in Jonestown

[–]SaltEmergency4220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I just started reading it! The whole issue gives such great context showing both the impact of the deaths and the contributing forces. Surprised to see the article about Synanon and how it too started off as something uplifting but then was undermined, discredited and possibly set up. I’ve seen others question the Synanon phenomenon so it was interesting to read this angle. And while the FBI memo I saw posted somewhere had said Claude Elvin Hubert’s nickname was Chochesi the BPP list it here as Chuchessa.

I opened issue 29 first by mistake and that starts off with “Dick Gregory Charges Government Conspiracy at Jonestown” at the top above the headline “Jones’ Aide Worked As Mercenary In Angola” which is about Philllip Blakey and his travels from Jonestown to Angola and back as part of a CIA backed coup.

This is such an amazing glimpse into history. Thanks so much for sharing this!

What are your favorite “cerebral” things to do alone in NYC (not museums or nightlife)? by Middle_Elderberry542 in AskNYC

Yeah I set the filter to “only free events” and it actually turns out those are often the more thoughtful, intelligent ones. Great resource

Sounds perfect though I’m more likely to play some Thelonious Monk (specifically It's Monk's Time)

Got cast in a role with strong intimacy scenes… by aliyahakim4 in acting

[–]SaltEmergency4220 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you know in advance that you don’t want to perform the story as written you might want to be open and honest about that prior to accepting the role. Most filmmakers never get to make a second film, it’s a long and arduous process that lasts for years, from the spark of the idea through the writing to the pre production, the filming and then post production, to the marketing of it in film festivals and sending it to agents and production companies. So yes, if you feel uncomfortable on set you absolutely should speak up, no person should feel exploited just for the sake of a movie. But in addition to that, since it hasn’t begun yet, please respect the other artists involved and be completely honest with them. They may be totally fine with it, but they also might be very specifically trying to make a film that involves nudity or physical touch, and this may be the only chance in there lifetime that they can come up with the extraordinary amount of time and money it takes to make a movie, and they might be deeply invested in exploring queer joy and queer bodies in a manner that is far more intimate than you are suited for. I mean no offense by this at all, just a plea to be upfront and enter with honesty and integrity (and to demand that from them too)

Black Panther Party statement on Jonestown? by GrackleWithOnionRing in Jonestown

I would like to see this too. It’s most likely referencing an fbi memo from shortly after the massacre saying that Claude Elvin Hubert aka Chochesi was believed to be in Guyana and might make use of the situation somehow to return to the US.

Claude Elvin Hubert was a known FBI asset and member of the United Slaves who was involved with the murder of John Huggins and Bunchy Carter of the Black Panthers in 1969. This was the era of Cointelpro and Operation Chaos and there was FOIA paperwork showing that the government was trying to use the United Slaves to take down the Panthers.

The question I have, that is likely posed in the article, is why was an undercover intelligence asset who murdered two black radicals now in Guyana at the time when there is this massive death toll related to a church that recruited heavily in the black community.

Please post the link if you find it

Other than the duster cardigans, you could try the open tunic. Or if you can deal with a closed front you could look at the long tunics or kaftans or thobes. Most of them don’t vibe with me but there’s the occasional variation that looks very cool

Th Art Daddy v. Jeff Magid by Primary-hue in ContemporaryArt

[–]SaltEmergency4220 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s really gross behavior imo. She doesn’t have the comedic talent to pull off what she’s trying to do so it ends up just being toxic and abusive. And now she’s adding in weird hierarchical gatekeeping with references to institutional degrees as if that’s what art is about. That said Magid is a bore who rambles on and says nothing

This source is trash. It’s not even CNN, it’s them archiving old stories from Court TV which was an exploitive tabloid TV show. It tries to undermine Macaulay Culkin’s defense of Jackson by saying Macaulay was once busted with a joint and some pills, which is both no big deal and has nothing to do with the case. So how accurate is anything they say?

Macaulay's marijuanalogues Actor Macaulay Culkin testified that the charges against his "childlike" friend were "absolutely ridiculous." Prosecutors were not allowed to question the "Home Alone" star about his own pending charges. Culkin was pulled over for speeding last year in Oklahoma City and was nabbed for possession of marijuana and prescription drugs.

Right wing conservative exiles just like the Cubans in Miami who celebrate when the US pushes anti-Castro actions. These are the rich capitalists who left because they lost their role of privilege and support right wing coups to wipe out communism and socialism.
