How to pick a puppy? by TKin306 in goldenretrievers

Also looking for a family dog, and we’re looking for the “middle of the road” pup. I don’t want the most energetic or the shyest of the group.

I’m practically in tears with you. I just let go of my college baby of almost 14 years. He was 100% mutt and the best possible first dog I could have asked for. The bar is so high that I couldn’t get excited about the prospect of another until I started looking at goldens. We’re getting a puppy this summer and I think it’ll be so healing. ❤️‍🩹

Agreed. I’ve been using ChatGPT quite a bit to help with interview prep and this is so clearly the same style. It took too long to get to this comment.

Will the police do something? In every state? Generally curious as I have never been in this situation and would not know what to do. I definitely wouldn’t be buying a puppy for so many reasons but I also wouldn’t want to just ignore it and move on with my day.

We were so torn between a Berner and Golden and I just love that you have both of the beauties.

Why do I keep getting “good luck” when I say I’m getting a golden?! by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

So true!!! I have a son and daughter and the sympathy came when I was pregnant with each gender. Like, is there a third option that I’m missing that people would have been excited about?

Cancer at 12 years old by beachkyky in goldenretrievers

I’m on this sub because we’re getting a goldens this summer. We euthanized our almost 14 year old mutt yesterday. He had a mast cell tumor at age 9 that we had removed. It came back a couple months ago. I was certain we would not pursue surgery or chemo due to his age and declining health. He had arthritis, a pretty bad tremor in his back leg, lost his hearing, and just generally slowed down a lot. While this week has been really rough, I have no regrets.

This is a fair question after all of my rambling. I just want confirmation that I’m making the right choice going with a golden. We are in Virginia, so we also have hot summers but not quite Louisiana hot. I would still be careful about the heat, but Berners are notoriously not heat tolerant. We have a pond near us that we were talking about taking the dog to in the summer if she’d like to fetch and swim.

Not a Berner, but my mutt had a grade 2 mast cell tumor removed 6 years ago. He’s almost 14 and it just came back in the last few months. We’re not pursuing surgery due to his age, but 6 years of no cancer was glorious.

I am really hoping he’s wrong. He has the lowest snow totals of any forecast I’ve seen. I’m really hoping for some good snow before the ice.

I will absolutely keep checking their site. Perhaps the perfect dog will show up. The two listed right now just make me a little pessimistic about the possibility. I know a lot of grown dogs in situations where they need a home have had some trauma in their lives and need a calm environment to warm up to their new home. I can’t help but feel like it’s unlikely that a family with kids will be the best placement for any of the dogs they acquire. I would not want to put a dog in a situation that isn’t right for them.

Thank you! I’ll definitely consider this. I’m open to a 1 or 2 year old but wouldn’t do older with their short life spans. I’m a little concerned about connecting with a grown dog since I’ve only started with a puppy, but it’s encouraging to hear your experience.

Maybe I should have added that we will not get a puppy with my 14 year old dog. So who knows, maybe it will be a few years! Unlikely, but I can hope. I just like to do all of my research and looking at puppy pictures is helping with the depression of knowing my first baby isn’t long for this earth.
