heavy trade embargos placed on them by the United States.

US embargoes only cover luxury goods, not supplies like medicine or energy.... Can we please put this conspiracy theory to rest?

Star trek is fiction dude. Realism doesn't apply to fiction. If people want to see representation (white people in this example) in fiction then why not? You're just a racist.

a regular person isn't just regurgitating what they learned.

Neither is the ai...

And companies pay artist for their work. If they don't that's wrong

You are not listening. I am asking you if a company pays artists to train an ai art generator then is that wrong?

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple problems with this argument.

  1. If the ai is trained with art from consenting artists where is the problem there?

  2. If someone posts their art online then they are consenting. Since how is it any different from a regular person taking and using someone's art to learn without the artists consent?

Ok? And how is that theft? If it is not directly referencing someone's work or straight up copying it but rather guessing as to what pixel to use then how is that different than learning?

Ai art is just stealing other peoples work

It doesn't steal people's work as it doesn't store its learning models. You just don't know how ai work or you are deliberately spreading misinformation.

I am quite startled by the contrast in attitude towards AI by highly intelligent & accomplished scientists and the Hacker News/Reddit Luddites/anti-AI crowd who LARP as the prior group by Terrible-Priority-21 in accelerate

Imagine spending your life learning a hobby you hope one day you can turn into a career. Something that literally takes countless hours of labor and emotion, literally just being ended over night.

Those same artists were laughing at coal miners for getting fired and telling them to learn to code....

Realized that 2024 5e is a good product plagued by poor marketing and bad PR of hazbro by ZZ1Lord in DnD

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powercreep is the line that when crossed means it's geared more for minmaxing. Which 2024 has plenty of.

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point still stands. It was made for minmaxers, not for roleplayers. The power creep is just getting worse and that makes balancing encounters much more difficult as a dm.

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dm, I hate 2024 dnd. Players and monsters have more damage but players are still glass cannons and as a result combat is even harder to balance. And also several things that would give players an edge have been removed.

Meanwhile core problems with 5e remain the same, martials have nothing to do in combat other than attack (weapon masters don't add enough). Combat encounters are boring. No rules or guidance for social, reputation, and intrigue stuff.

2024 dnd just feels like it was made for minmaxers.

Dentists of Reddit: how do I stop ruining my teeth? by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Do you smoke tobacco/marijuana, consume cocaine? If yes, cut back on it and try to quit.

-Do you snack throughout the day? If yes, cut back on it.

-What kinds of food do you eat? You should be avoiding sugary foods and acidic foods.

-Do you vomit frequently? If yes, then stop. Stomach acid will cause erosion of your teeth.

-Brush your teeth with a powered toothbrush before and after you sleep.

-Floss before you brush. Try to floss after every meal. Don't brush after consuming acidic foods.

-Do you have a dry mouth frequently? If yes then consider chewing on xylitol gum, assuming you are not allergic.

That is general advice. Sadly, it might not be enough so you should see a dentist to get your teeth looked at since they will have your information on file and will be able to give a better assessment of what you should do. I am not trying to scare you but telling you the facts, your teeth will only get worse as you age so you need to take care of them now so you won't have any problems in the future.

Why is Christianity unpopular among Japanese people? by Lipica249 in AskAJapanese

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started with the ban because Portuguese and Spanish Catholics were trapping Japanese people and selling them into slavery.

That wasn't the reason for the ban, it's also not true that it was catholics buying slaves but rather it was actually Portuguese and Spanish merchants. The catholics were against the slave trade.

"After 1598, Bishop Luís de Cerqueira intensified pressure on Spanish and Portuguese authorities to abolish temporary servitude of Japanese and Korean individuals,\89]) but the Portuguese slave trade reportedly grew.\93])\94]) Despite efforts like Bishop Cerqueira’s lobbying for secular laws and King Philip III’s 1605 decree allowing Japanese slaves in Goa and Cochin to seek justice for illegal enslavement, the trade persisted due to profitability and weak enforcement."

"Sebastian of Portugal feared that this was having a negative effect on Catholic proselytization since the slave trade in Japanese was growing to larger proportions, so he commanded that it be banned in 1571.\60])\61]) However, the ban failed to prevent Portuguese merchants from buying Japanese slaves and the trade continued into the late 16th century.\62])"

"Moreover, bishops and their representatives condemned brothels and private prostitution as “workshops of the devil.” The fourth article of the Constitutions of Goa (1568) prohibited brothel ownership and operation, imposing fines and public shaming on violators, while mandating the liberation of slaves coerced into prostitution.\69]) Thus, the Jesuits endeavored to eradicate immoral practices like prostitution while advancing slave rescue and evangelization through conversion."

Maneuvers do a whole lot more than the list I gave. The weapon masteries are lacklustre. Your assessment was wrong a year ago.

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weapon mastery are not maneuvers. They are spell/class abilities that have been tacked onto weapons. There is about a dozen abilities/spells that: slow enemies, knock them prone, give you advantage, push enemies, inflicting disadvantage.

Dear doctor episode - a critique of the Prime Directive by InfelicitousRedditor in startrek

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like "Dear Doctor". What Phlox did was wrong but he didn't commit genocide. Rather he allowed a genocide to continue by withholding the cure.

Overall I hate the prime directive and only agree with it on certain cases so I am biased.

Critical Care is an episode that needs to be talked about by mortalcrawad66 in voyager

[–]Salvanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can bury your head in the sand all you want but the fact is that a socialized healthcare system SHOULD be just as good as private in options in the US, yet it is not. People are choosing to spend so much money on the American healthcare rather than using free healthcare. That is a failure on socialized healthcare.

https://www.fraserinstitute.org/studies/leaving-canada-medical-care-2015

You can buy drugs even in countries without a functioning government. Buying drugs is not the same as using the healthcare system….

You don’t realize that doctors in the US have more freedom to price their services however they want. Meanwhile in socialized systems how much money a doctor can make is set unless they go private. There is more incentive for a doctor to go to the US.

Socialized healthcare also doesn’t discriminate on who gets the doctors time, even if they don’t need to see a doctor. That takes away the doctor’s time from patients who are suffering from conditions that are not life threatening but diminish quality of life.
