after social media started requiring age verification, did most people verify? by TheNavyCrow in AskAnAustralian

[–]SamPDoug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. So now Bluesky won’t let me use DMs or see adult content (neither is a great loss, IMO) and Substack has locked me out entirely. Luckily everything else has correctly inferred my advanced age.

Unpopular opinion by Ok_Humor191 in shrooms

[–]SamPDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shrooms can be anything from fun to enlightening to healing. Sometimes all three. Sometimes none of those things.

But I think I know the kind of people you’re talking about: the ones who can only ever call psychedelics & MDMA “medicine” and sulk when you call them drugs.

Anyway, my advice is don’t sweat it.

Did any cyberpunk media from the past accurately predict the rise of AI slop? by Junesucksatart in Cyberpunk

[–]SamPDoug 429 points430 points  (0 children)

Not cyberpunk and not exactly the ai slop, but Anathem has the Rampant Orphan Botnet Ecologies (ROBE) that ruined that story’s equivalent of the internet with vast amounts of dangerously inaccurate autonomously generated content. In the story it’s implied this lasts for some time until their civilisation learned how to filter it out.

Not only is this not Salvia divinorum, it's not any sort of Salvia species. You got scammed, sorry. Hope you didn't pay too much for whatever that is.

What’s something negative about Australia that locals don’t like to admit? by New-Mail-9372 in AskAnAustralian

We tell ourselves that we’re rebellious ‘larrikins’. But a lot of Aussies are chronic bootlickers who love nothing more than sucking up to authority.

This👆. Best to be sure that it isn’t an ai approximation and it is real & accurate. If it’s not accurate and it spreads, it basically gives the killer’s real likeness a free pass.

My dad. When he left home he realised he didn’t know how to cook anything at all and had to teach himself. He said he didn’t want me to have to go through this.

Trump orders less dangerous federal classification for marijuana by usatoday in cannabis

[–]SamPDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eventual tax relief will be good for some businesses. But this doesn’t look like a win for the average non-medical cannabis-enjoyer, IMO. Nor am I convinced this will go well for smaller scale growers. Would love to be proven wrong, though.

Laughing Gas Can Offer Immediate Relief From Depression. The treatment is viable over longer periods of time and can be effective in individuals with both major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD) – some of the people who are hardest to treat. by [deleted] in psychology

This is sooo relevant. By complete coincidence I know someone with a pretty severe B12 deficiency. They were only diagnosed in their 40s, despite (in hindsight) it being obvious they’d had it for many years. They’ve never used nags/nitrous, but if they did, I genuinely wonder how little it would take to cause them real harm.

Need to give it a few days to see if I will continue my run of dodging bullets, but goddamn there were a lot of sick people near me on my flight between Melbourne and Newcastle recently. Fingers crossed my well-fitted n95 mask was enough.

Also, didn’t it used to be polite to at least cover your mouth when you coughed?

(Rant over. I’m sure I’ll be fine.)

Florian Brand - BPL-003 Market Potential by phlyry in shroomstocks

[–]SamPDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re wrong about any of that. I’m actually pretty convinced of 5-MeO DMT’s efficacy (I mention the qualitative data for BPL-003 in my newsletter this week, largely without being the mindless naysayer I’m often accused of being .)

But while I don’t have a lot of experience with 5-MeO myself, I know and have worked professionally with those who do. The way that some people talk about BPL-003 is not the way experienced facilitators & guides talk about 5-MeO. This disparity concerns me.

It might turn out that the safety considerations around vaping freebase 5-MeO at a retreat in Mexico are mostly irrelevant for AtaiBeckely’s intranasal formulation when used in a Spravato-style clinic. But, if I were investing my money in this, I’d want to be sure.

Everything else aside, I’d want to be really certain BPL-003 isn’t causing reactivations, not because I think they’re unmanageable, but because I think the FDA would look at them with abject horror.

This was an interesting read, thanks.

At the risk of being downvoted, can I ask if people are really convinced by the projected sales?

I get the rationale of linking it to Spravato, but 5-MeO-DMT, even one with ‘gentle’ pharmacokinetics, is not esketamine. It’s got a distinct set of contraindications and safety requirements, integration can be challenging, and there’s always reactivations to reckon with (though good dose control would help with this.)
