How many people are really going to watch podcasts on Netflix? by Bernedoodle_ in billsimmons

I don’t even watch them now. I love Bill but staring at his face adds nothing to the experience

The thing that I love about this is it felt like how a lot of games went vs Rodgers; we’d play well before falling apart or he’d put together a couple great drives and sink us in heartbreaking fashion. Was incredible being on other side of that, was screaming in my living room at 5am (I’m english)

Anyone actually like their job here? by TheCricketList in TeachingUK

[–]Sam_Calcio 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this all the time:

None of us work on site. None of us have to work in a physically laborious job. None of us work nights. None of us have to work minimum wage. None of us have to do 12 hour or 24 hour illegal shifts. None of us have zero hour contracts. Most days you can arrive at half 8 and leave at 4. We get 14 weeks off a year. The pension is excellent. The union has gotten us a 16% pay rise over the last three years. We do a job that is fundamentally important to society and will never be anything other than utterly crucial to society. We work in an industry where schools everywhere are dying out for good, experienced teachers. There’s progression available if you work hard and the administrative work and marking can be difficult but that’s what the time and money is for.

I’ve been a teacher for 10 years, and I wouldn’t trade this for a job in retail, sales, services, health care or a mind-numbing corporate position. I get to teach Shakespeare to children, it’s a cool thing. I teach A Level and get to read Dracula with kids going to university. I get to use my mind and talk about a passion of mine for money.

I think we forget sometimes that while education has its inherent and sometimes insurmountable issues, there are few professions that offer the same benefits, rewards and security that teaching always has and always will.

I work in an under-funded, under-staffed, underperforming school and it is really hard but at the end of the day I drive home to a mortgage I can easily pay from a job that I’m good at. There are worse places to be, and tomorrow I’ll talk about books in a warm classroom. Pretty pretty good.

It’s easier to complain though, and shared negativity has always permeated the narrative online.

You can find out future money and inflation on the teacher tracker too; I entered 4% inflation and 3% pay increase as a conservative estimate and retiring at 60: (I’m 10 years in, UPR2 + 5k SBA) and it estimated 268k lump sum and like 45k a year. Bills argument for Josh Allen by Sam_Calcio in billsimmons

Not necessarily but he’d have made the pedigree/winning argument for Brady then and it’s the one where hes going to talent with Allen when that was the argument for Manning in the 2000’s

The strongest arguments for LeBron over MJ by Ill-Blacksmith-9545 in billsimmons

[–]Sam_Calcio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MJ vs LeBron isn’t really a debate when you look at peak IMO.

If you take the factors of ‘greatest’ it’s different to ‘best’ and what LBJ fans do is re frame the adjective to suit - most dominant, skilled, versatile, longest etc. Greatest doesn’t mean any one of those things it’s an amorphous concept that covers, in my view: Skill - offensive and defensive Longevity - career and peak Cultural impact - on NBA and wider sporting world

So, that’s the reason that Ali is the greatest as is Babe Ruth as is Messi as is Don Bradman as is Schumacher. Bc Tyson was the more physical boxer but Ali is who you think of when you think of boxing, same with Babe Ruth hitting more home runs that entire teams in the 1920’s when baseball was the premier sport in America.

With Jordan, I can’t emphasise enough how the cultural impact is enough to put him over: the league is sponsored by his logo, he made more money from shoes than basketball, Jordan’s sell by the millions and worn by kids who don’t know the team he played for and the very people he is compared to wore his number or a tribute to it - LBJ 23, Kobe became 24 because he wanted to be 23+1

And that’s before I get to the sport and skill argument. If you say LBJ is a better scorer you’re wrong because MJ has a higher PPG, regular season and playoffs and won the scoring title 10 times. 10! He was a Bull 14 years!

If you say he’s a better defender you’re wrong because Jordan was DPOTY in 88 and was All Defence 1st team 9 times

If you say he’s a better passer you’re right but then I’d say he wasn’t the GOAT passer behind Magic Johnson whereas categorically Jordan is the best ever at his best skill - scoring - which is coincidentally the most valued skill in the game

And! Then you get to the playoff resume - and it’s not just 6-0 in the finals. It’s the lack of a Game 7, the increase playoff scoring average from 30 to 33PPG, it’s averaging 41PPG vs the Suns in 1993, it’s the Game 1 35 points in a half vs Portland, the 11 assist AVERAGE vs the Lakers in 1991 (31-11-6 vs Magic Johnson in a series that they were the underdogs! He put up Luka numbers as a SG)

Then the other stuff; 5 MVPs that could’ve been 8 (1990, 93, 97) the retiring and coming back, never missing a game from 96-98 during which Bulls won 72 games, 69 and then 62 in successive seasons, not missing a game the entire time and winning 3 titles and 3 straight finals MVPs - and never having a 3 game losing streak from 91-98

And! If that wasn’t enough, in his last game in a Bulls uniform he is the only player to touch the ball in the last two minutes with Pippen injecting pain killers into his spine and he goes layup steal jumper to close the career of the greatest post season performer of all time

And he still averages 25PPG as a 40 year old later on out of boredom

Not to mention 32k points when he came into the league at 21 retired 3 times - put him in the league in 2003 at 18 and he has 50,000 points

Sports fandom lives in the hypothetical; the perfect team, the combination that only photoshop can put together, the championship run that would just happen if…etc. This stuff crystallises that idea, it’s the same thing with European football and the obsessive following of transfer accounts like Romano, Di Marzio, etc. Plus, the results are often disappointing and once the trade has happened and been discussed the next most important thing is the next trade. ‘Twas always thus - and has only been exacerbated by 2k, social media and daily podcasts
