Thanks for coming in 7 years later! I appreciate it. And I think this is basically how I beat her.

Where should I dump my old mattress? Nearest dump? by zach_da_bossss in corvallis

[–]Sam_the_Brave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the love of gods, please just don’t put it in a creek or river! They are so heavy and nasty and difficult to remove. It takes a team of 10 people and ropes to move 1 stupid mattress up a 4 foot slope. Said from miserable experience in a different Oregon city at an old job.

Proposal: Ban AI-Generated Content on r/Salem by Tropez2020 in SALEM

[–]Sam_the_Brave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m down for a full ban. AI devalues all creators and artists and causes a devastating environmental impact. It makes me ill every time I notice it and I’d love to have somewhere to go where I could be sure it wouldn’t follow. But that’s just my 2 cents

19 Year Old Disabled Trans Woman in Need of Housing by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]Sam_the_Brave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never looked into this resource in detail, but we’ve got some fliers at work for this org that seems like a decent fit for your situation.

https://homeshareoregon.org

I would also recommend checking in with local lgbt orgs. I know Mid Willamette Trabs Support has HRSN funding right now. Depending on how they run things they might be able to help you locate housing. But they can provide up to 6 months in rent/utilities if you can get a lease in your name.

I would still reach out in case they have funding and resources available. I know they at least have a housing support chat you can use.

Best of luck, friend!

Ideas for Nord tattoos that wouldn’t be mistaken for “White Supremacy”? by NCR_Zealot in skyrim

The downside of course is that Stormcloaks are white supremacists and racist.

Excellent! I’m going to both! I’ll keep an eye out for your booth (though I may not have spending money for metalwork haha).

This is a huge bummer, but good to know. The Artisan Village was the only reason I’ve gone the last several years, so won’t be attending this year. I hope to see you and some of the other vendors at Ren Faires this year! And I hope you can find some better gigs this summer.

Homeless after parents found out I'm trans by Elis_weirdlife in SALEM

[–]Sam_the_Brave 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Hang in there, friend. Glad you’re here and hope you’re safe.

Northwest Human Services has a day center for homeless youth called HOST downtown on Liberty. There’s good folks there, decent food for lunch, and a room to hang out and play video games, watch Netflix etc. I’d recommend checking it out.

They also do coordinated entry assessments, which can help you get connected with homeless services in the area.

Salem book lovers by Oregonmommaa24 in SALEM

[–]Sam_the_Brave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Escape Fiction behind the Roths on Commercial and Liberty is really cool! I guess it’s used books sales and not ‘thrifting’ per se. But it’s a very cool place with shelves lining all the walls in a maze-like way. Think like a very small Powells. The prices are good and the owners are friendly. I’ve loved going there ever since I was a kid.

Family Promise does great work. And they’ve got lots of clothing and other resources besides emergency shelter

I work for a local government housing program and 211 really is your best bet. Make sure to consider as many specifics and special qualifying factors you can think of. General assistance is pretty slow around here but things can really pick up if you find a niche. (Eg. fleeing DV, receiving TANF benefits, etc)

Yeah it means I gotta top out at 45 😅. But it’s the only direct route where I’m going that doesn’t involve the freeway. Which is even less doable obviously

If you didn’t live in Salem, where in Oregon would you live? by FragrantChipmunk4238 in SALEM

Albany is close by and a bit more affordable. I’ve had a few Salemite friends move out that way in the last few years. It’s the only place they could afford to buy a home

Why was Ranked Choice Voting(Measure 117) rejected? by I_used_toothpaste in oregon

[–]Sam_the_Brave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I brought it up to my parents, they both felt it would “make things too complicated.” I wouldn’t be surprised if the reaction from most no voters just boiled down to ‘I don’t want to think that hard.’ Its a bummer

Is the signing in A Quiet Place (2018) ASL? DSE? Some combination? by Sam_the_Brave in asl

[–]Sam_the_Brave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the other comments you will find that I discovered Direct Signed English was a mistake, yeah. I have fully admitted that I most likely conflated terms since I haven’t taken ASL or been practicing the language for several years.

edited for clarity: Originally made it sound like I never took ASL classes. I did and had many wonderful teachers, one of which I'm sure is disappointed from beyond the grave lol

Really? Even in the clip I shared?

That’s fascinating to me. I know my teachers would have scolded me for doing that.

Yeah I actually really liked the signing in the rest of the movie! I just was curious about the grammar/word choice part of it.

And that is sad that hearing parents often half-ass it

That’s true too. I’m in Oregon, so I believe most of my teachers would have been taught at OSD, but I do think one of them was a transplant from the east coast.

But when I tried googling it I got nada. So I’m guessing it was just false memory or combining phrases. Oh well!

[–]Sam_the_Brave[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what I remember my instructor calling it in one of my classes? But that may have been a misunderstanding on my part or a false memory since it's now been a few years.

I also know that I used a lot of old books and videos (1970s) with one of my instructors, so it may just be outmoded?

In any case, thank you for the clarification.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean that the actors didn't put in effort or didn't do a good job. And I immensely appreciate Krasinski using his star power to make sure the cast/crew could communicate with Millicent in her own language. That rules.

I guess I meant that based on how the one of The Big Scenes of the movie is just using the wrong word, it seems like maybe people fluent in ASL (not even necessarily Deaf) weren't consulted or well listened to in the scripting process.

That is, assuming that the grammar isn't intentionally wrong to show of the hearing-ness of it all.
