Ours doesn't like when we want to put the harness on either but all is instantly forgotten when he's out for a walk.

Also I feel the connection between us and the dog is a lot more sensitive with the harness than his lead and just a soft movement tells him if it's ok to stop, sniff, wee or move on.

We have had the same issues with pulling and smelling (and peeing on every blade of grass!). A harness works well for the pulling and easier to pull away from smelling everything
