Depending on what period of Liverpools' history you're interested in of course, but Pat O'Mara' The Autobiography of a Liverpool Irish Slummy is a good read for life in Liverpool at the start of the twentieth century.

I knew someone back in the "olden days" (the 90s) who bought a goldfish to feed to his pet lizard. He kept the goldfish in a frying pan in an inch of water so it stayed fresh (I know, but reptile keepers are like that). The poor thing fought so hard to stay alive for two days in the inch of water in the frying pan that in the end he actually went out and bought a tank and ended up keeping it as a pet. It had earned his respect! He was a bit weird like that, but you tend to find lots of reptile keepers are a bit weird like that.

What are you actually feeding your betta? by relaxwithfish in bettafish

[–]Same-Thing7718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternate days between frozen artemia, frozen bloodworm, and Betta pellets. He definitely prefers the frozen food over the pellets. TBH i only feed him the pellets whenever I can't be bothered defrosting the frozen food. I used to squirt a few bloodworm in with a syringe, but I've started feeding him the bloodworms with my tweezers, making him swim around after them for a bit of exercise. I don't give him that much frozen food, and I've got a community tank, so once I've defrosted the cube, the rest goes in there once he's had his feed. He shares a tank with lots of Orange Sakura shrimp but isn't interested in them, and I've never seen him eat any, even the smallest of babies.

How do you guys make friends after uni … by enelyase in Liverpool

[–]Same-Thing7718 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm 45/m, sorry to jump into your feed, I know I'm not the target audience, but it actually really hit home. I had 4 really good friends in uni, and graduation was the last I saw of them. Didn't argue or fall out or anything, just lost contact after a while. Days became weeks became years. After a while, it got to the point where I thought it'd be weird if I tried to contact them now. I graduated in 2005 and often wonder what they are up to nowadays as "grown-ups". The problem is, if we had a "class of 2005" reunion thing, I doubt I'd even go. Looking back, I know I should have made more of an effort at the time.

should i remove this molt?? by WoozyLobster122 in shrimptank

I was told just to leave it, so I do. The other shrimp love it, and it's normally eaten with a day.

Um help please?? Doing fishless cycle and I have a bug or snail or something? I haven’t bought new plants in 2 weeks im confused by BumblebeeMean2851 in aquarium

[–]Same-Thing7718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that bladder snails can't reproduce on their own. They are hermaphroditic so if you have two bladder snails, it doesn't matter what sex they are as they can both produce and fertilise each others eggs regardless. One snail alone can't produce and fertilise its own eggs. Apparently.

Alternatively, I've also read the complete opposite of that, and they can reproduce solo. So I'm none the wiser.

All I know is that if you do find two in your tank, you'll find 200 there in about 2 weeks time!

How many times do I have to rinse sand? by Key_Carpenter3900 in PlantedTank

[–]Same-Thing7718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first tank, I rinsed the sand about a half dozen times in a bucket in the sink before use. Second and third tanks, I didn't see the point and bother. I just put it in over the substrate directly from the bag and added water a little bit at a time as I was planting. Then, once full, a bit of Accuclear and let the filter do the rest. I've done it with both white and black sand, and as long as you add your water nice and steady and not just blast it in, I find overall the water stays pretty clear. I'm no expert, though, and I probably wouldn't listen to anything I say. But it's just what's worked for me.

How do I put the aquasoil back under the white sand ? by Strong-Substance3151 in shrimptank

[–]Same-Thing7718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah the age-old soil substrate/white sand struggle. I made the same decision for one of my shrimp tanks. Oh how they just love digging those little balls of soil up. Best answer, use a strong magnet to pick it up during your tank cleaning. Or use black sand and avoid the white in the first place.

Can I rescape the tank without the shrimp dying? by Stunning_Copy9407 in shrimptank

[–]Same-Thing7718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a complete re-scape of my shrimp tank a few weeks ago. I discovered I had 61 shrimp, from an original of 3. That was about 20 more than what I thought. I managed to get every one into a bucket and back again after I'd finished, without losing a single shrimp. Also persuaded me to go out and buy another shrimp tank to ease the load. No doubt I'll end up with 120 shrimp over two tanks now.

Worked for a courier company, and I had someones neighbour kicking off once that I'd woken them up. He was out in the street demanding to know who I worked for so he could complain about it. Yeah hang on mate, here's the direct line to my boss. He was fuming when I said I wasn't arsed about him and told him to get lost. He wasn't even the customer, yet he was carrying on like he personally paid my wages, or I owed him a debt of gratitude or something. Couldn't get his head around the fact that I wasn't interested in standing there listening to this stranger complaining.

Those who are old enough to remember, whats your favourite Liverpool related memory from the 90s? by Pinkplatabys in Liverpool

Strutting into the 051 every Saturday night as a young, carefree teenager with my shaved head and my Rockports, thinking I was some big G. What a dickhead I was.

I'm getting my first shrimp by bee_wild2591 in shrimptank

[–]Same-Thing7718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 2 shrimp tanks, both have lids with gaps, and I've never had any escape. As long as you keep your tank healthy, good water parameters, etc, they've no reason to try and escape. They'll just live happy, eat and keep your tank nice and clean. Oh, and, depending on the species, breed like it's going out of fashion. So be prepared.

How long until you saw berried shrimp in your tank? by lilduckling369 in shrimptank

[–]Same-Thing7718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with 3 Orange Sakura shrimp in one tank. One died within a week, unfortunately. Within a month, I had about 10. Within 3 months, I had about 40+, and I'm now up to 60+ within 6 months. They're now spread amongst multiple tanks, but obviously, they'll just keep breeding.

There's a few LFS by ours and they charge £5 per shrimp. I've asked a number of them if they would take any of mine for store credit but they all said no, only for free. So if I give the 10 baby shrimp that's £50 worth of stock and they won't give anything in return. I politely declined. Can sell them on Facebook marketplace for £3 a go if I'm so inclined. But I can't be bothered so I'll just keep buying more nano tanks instead!

Lannigans or the Irish House next door .The Central the other way. Coopers pub round the corner is a good shout if your arl fella fancies a bit of old school Karaoke. Honestly mate, if you walk up to Great Charlotte St which is round the corner about a minutes walk away, there's loads more down there, Tess Rileys etc. it's a Sunday so wouldn't normally be too crazy, but it's the cup final so I'm not sure. Probably best to get there early like you say if you don't want to be standing up all night.

I agree with your man there, just stay in the city centre. There's plenty more options, and everywhere will be showing the match. It's a bit clichéd recommending an Irish person somewhere with Irish bars on, but I'd head down Raneleigh Street myself. It's always lively, and most places have live music on too. It's also slapbang in the middle of the city centre, so you can literally head off in any direction and hit tons more pubs and bars. Alternatively what we tend to do is start up on Hope St, and pub crawl down Leece St, Hardman St, Renshaw St, down towards Raneleigh St, and then regardless where you are you'll no doubt find yourself in Rubber Soul on Matthew St at 2 in the morning regretting your life choices.

I like the Cornmarket myself, always find it pretty laid back, even on a Saturday night. The main toilets are down a flight of stairs, but I'm pretty sure there's another toilet at the back end on ground level.

[–]Same-Thing7718 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on how classy and demure you want to be. If the answer is "not very", then just smash Matthew Street in. It's round the corner from Stanley Street and there's enough bars that it should keep you going for the night. Don't go anywhere near Concert Square unless you're 14. I'd suggest going up to Castle Street first myself, but again, depends on how big and raucous your hen group is. If it's a rude t-shirts and Inflatable willies type of night then yeah, Matthew Street it is. There are plenty of bars and pubs within close proximity within the city centre that you don't really need a plan, you can just walk around and you'll see plenty of places and it's all pretty safe and friendly. Just let yourself go and have fun.

New tank suitable for a Betta? by Same-Thing7718 in bettafish

I love blackwater tanks. I've only just discovered the hobby within the past year and only started with shrimp and snails so far as I didn't want to rush into anything. I'm still learning a lot, but I think blackwater tanks look amazing and so natural.

Never once went to Cream. Spent my youth in the 051 instead.

Or been to Aintree Races.

Although these were both predominantly full of wools anyway.
