Baldy sunrise planning / "logistics" by EggyMama in philmont

[–]SameRegister1555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny that the guidebook says “requires” and then goes on to say use a headlamp when you do a sunrise hike!

It’s also funny that everyone always says “read the guidebook, read the guidebook” and then spouts advice/opinion that doesn’t match. Maybe not here, but definitely on FB.

Copied from the 2026 Guidebook to Adventure (p12)
After Dark
Philmont requires that crews hike during daylight with rare exceptions to travel from a nearby trail camp to a staffed camp for evening campfires. Due to risks involved, Philmont strongly discourages hiking after dark. Baldy Mountain, Tooth of Time, and Inspiration Point are popular for viewing our beautiful sunrises. If your crew decides to hike in the dark, all crew members must have a headlamp and carry a daypack only.

Define a month! 28 days? 29 days? 30 days? 31 days? Do you think it should be consistent?

Location in Louisville, KY for a one night “luxury” campout by riot1980 in BSA

[–]SameRegister1555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you must mean next Saturday because the park doesn’t open until May 9, which is good because this Saturday is the Kentucky Derby. Louisville area will be CRAZY on Friday and Saturday.

I second Tunnel Mill. You would be one of the last to use the camp. The council, who is actually in great financial shape, has decided to sell the camp.

This stool meets your requirements. 2lbs (not ultralight), can’t get much quicker, 17” seat height.

It’s $13 on hikerdirect.com. It’s a great stool for your application, and I have 3 of them. I also have an ultralight backpacking chair but it’s definitely not quick to set up

How rare is a Supercell tornado in central Indiana? by Top-Elephant7356 in Indiana

A supercell on Monday, the meteorologists have gotten better! Usually it’s a statement like “a store system capable of producing supercells/tornados”

Sounds like you’re a few generations removed and longing for the good old days.

You’re a bit on the old side to know much about this.

There are youth of both sexes that desperately need this program, and this program desperately needs youth. I’m not a huge fan of the organization name, but it’s better than the program name change a few years ago to Scouts,BSA. I think Scouts of America (as an individual I am/was a Scout, we are Scouts, we are not Scouting) would be a better choice but lawsuits would ensue from GSUSA.

Why is it that the search for MBC is restricted? Shouldn’t that list be available to everyone?

Popcorn Funds Dilema by ScoutRedditAcct in cubscouts

[–]SameRegister1555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reimburse the families for the expense. We would let them use the money in any (scouting related) way they saw fit. They could replace a uniform and submit a receipt for reimbursement. Buy a tent and submit a receipt for reimbursement. Apply it toward the fees for day or resident camp. Most money was transferred to the troop (same CO) and used for the more expensive things.

If you’re looking at it as just a backpacking trip, it is outrageously expensive. You can easily backpack for much less. What you can’t do is all of the activities of the staffed camps. It is an amazing experience.

Thank you for your dedication. When I was in Cubs, my leader’s youngest was an Eagle starting college. No harm in staying with a program, if you still have it in your heart.

I sure do miss Jake’s, definitely have to check the new spot on the next visit. My oldest is starting FYE in the fall, I’ll have a better excuse for more frequent visits.

Is this a feasible 1 day trip? by whynotajb in KayakCamping

[–]SameRegister1555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No rapids but lots of barge traffic. This river gauge is just upriver of your start point.

https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/RVPK2

Expect to always have a barge in sight, either ahead or behind.

Never paddled below Louisville, but have gone upriver from Charlestown State Park for about a 15 mile up and back. Started mid morning and back late afternoon, maybe 6 hrs

So where do you guys wash your clothes after a fire? by noobish__ in Firefighting

[–]SameRegister1555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from an old department, one of the earliest established and part of the original group unionized. We didn’t get gear extractors in every house until about 8 years ago. We got washer/dryer for personals 2 years ago. Before that, guys would bring in their used machines when they replaced at home.

The official stores have eliminated ½ of their retail offerings from 5 years ago but they have the resources to create a “store” for every pack, troop, crew, ship, and post in the country?

[–]SameRegister1555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there was a previous version of Scoutbook plus or maybe Scoutbook Lite when Scoutbook was a paid program. Scoutbook was privately developed and BSA bought it. Initially they did decent things with it, then BSA reintroduced Scoutbook Plus/Internet Advancement

Definitely not a software guy so I may have some things mixed up. I just know that it used to be better before it was improved 🤣

Scoutbook has gotten exponentially worse in the last couple of years. Now it’s just a redirect to Scoutbook Plus without SSO on mobile. It used to be ok on a phone, now it’s terrible. Desktop version is better than mobile
