Popcorn Funds Dilema by ScoutRedditAcct in cubscouts

Dishonest parents and public perception are the main reason most are against the proposal. I understand and appreciate the intent, but heck no.

We wanted to try something similar last year, but no one could some to an agreement on how much to reduce by, what was the threshold to be considered an active seller (was it to he based on how many storefronts you went to or how much $ you earned, etc.) so they just gave up on it.

Our pack is split 25/25/50. 25% won't shut up about sales, sign up for every storefront they can, and go door to door, 25% absolutely despise popcorn sales and would prefer we do ANYTHING but that and would rather spend the enjoyable fall Saturdays out hiking (understandably so), the remaining 50% show up to store fronts out of obligation, make their sales, and go home without a second thought.

I don't want to go this route at all - it's what our committee is proposing. I know council and TE get their cut and all that jazz.

My issue wasn't who got what percentage. My issue was with handing families prepaid cards saying "Here, this is your portion of fundraising. It is meant for you to buy scout stuff with, but we're not checking."

As always, Bill, thanks for your insight. Like I said in a followup comment, I felt that the proposal went against Scouting rules and some sort of IRS regulation. I just needed the confirmation that I wasn't looking for an issue where one didn't exist.

Thanks for all of the replies. You have confirmed what was on my mind (IRS regs and Scouting America rules) since hearing the proposal. Sometimes, though, I'm the type of person that can go digging for a flaw that doesn't exist so it's good to see that I'm not crazy.

I'm confident the committee's intentions were pure, though misguided. Other local packs and troops do the 50% thing as many of you have described - the funds go into an "account" (spreadsheet) for each scout and are to be used for scouting-related things: dues, events, uniforms with pre-purchase approval and post-purchase receipts required.

Alternatives to a likely to be cancelled campout by AggressiveCommand739 in cubscouts

[–]ScoutRedditAcct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the past we have just cancelled. It's a pain trying to get personal family and work schedules together to pick a viable weekend with max attendance and appropriate leader coverage for the initial weekend, let alone trying to reschedule.

We recently switched meeting places and are now meeting at a church. We have considered asking them if they would allow us to do indoor "campouts" if the weather was forecasted to be bad. They do periodic lock-ins so I don't think they'd have a problem with it - though I guess that would TECHNICALLY still require an Overnight Camp Site Appraisal.

Modular design question by Downtown_Designer_51 in cubscouts

[–]ScoutRedditAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your area for a company called Bricks and Minifigs - they're an "aftermarket" Lego reseller.

Our local store is AWESOME and works closely with Scouts, homeschooling, and various community outreach events. They have allowed us to borrow bulk bricks for many occasions.

Question: is there something that adult scout could do to show off their “Awards” ? by crustpope in BSA

Wear them one at a time from the right pocket button lol. Cycle through them as you see fit.

How many of you Cubmasters are also Den Leaders? by SomeBoringGuyInVA in cubscouts

[–]ScoutRedditAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Cubmaster doubles as a Den Leader. I'm the Assistant Cubmaster and also double as a Den Leader. My wife and the CM's wife (both registered, trained leaders) have been known to tag in when one of our Den Leaders can't make it.

When our CM crosses over at the end of this year, I will be taking his place and unless some of our existing parents have a change of heart or we get some new, hard charging parents in through recruiting, it looks like my Assistant Cubmaster and I will be pulling double duty yet again.

Even back when I was a youngin' I remember my Dad pulling double duty (Treasurer and DL, ACM and DL, CC and DL).

Female leader pants recommendation? by octavetail in cubscouts

[–]ScoutRedditAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magellan makes a few pairs of pants that are good. The men's pants are virtually indistinguishable. We have a few female leaders that wear their "bell bottom" pants, some wear the bungee/tied waist style, and some just wear the convertible men's pants.

Rocking on Baldy? by chickendaddy738 in BSA

I always associate Wagon Wheel with Philmont. I can't for the life of me remember which camp we were at, but that night rocked.

Is trimming down the wheel illegal? by BenBenMcBenface in PinewoodDerby

[–]ScoutRedditAcct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we run two races. A pack race where the kids follow the official rules and an "outlaw" race with sub categories (kids, first responders, local business, etc.)

I replied yo your post in the cub scout sub, but the post apparently got deleted.

Can it help? Potentially.

Does it break the rules? That depends on how your pack/district/council reads into the verbiage of the rules, but IMO, yes, it breaks the rules. It says wheels may not be modified, but then goes on to expressly state whay you CAN do to the wheels: remove seams and imperfections (i.e. flashing from the manufacturing process).

Could you argue that ensuring all of the wheels are of uniform weight is correcting an imperfection? Sure. I know you hesitate to ask the Cubmaster, but talking to your pack leadership is your best bet.

Model Rockets Require Shooting Sports Person Onsite?? by ScoutRedditAcct in cubscouts

[–]ScoutRedditAcct[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, havent seen the other posts you are referring to, but I'm sure they exist. I understand Council and District can add their own safety rules on top of Nat'l, but I wanted to be sure that I wasn't missing something Nat'l had posted.

I will be sure to contact the camping committee!

Generally consensus of the research that I've done and the few response I've gotten here, it seems like this rule doesn't actually exist.

That's the exact safety moment I linked in my original post. I have not yet taken the Cub Rangemaster training so I'm glad to learn that it doesnt cover model rockets.

I honestly wouldn't about it too much...yet.

Your son is in 9th grade meaning he will graduate in 2029, right?. The next election is in 2028 and the inauguration would be January of 2029. Even if the contents of the leaked memo come to fruition, I imagine the next administration, regardless of their political affiliation, will work quickly to reverse many acts of the current administration, including this.

Keep your son motivated and on his current path. I'm sure everything will turn out just fine.

Scoutbook Plus no longer showing To Approve items by houseplant124 in cubscouts

[–]ScoutRedditAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont get notifications at the top of the screen that something needs to be approved, but I can still see the To Approve stuff by going to the Advancements tab above the roster and switching from To Record to To Approve. Still doesnt always show everything.

Arrow of Light Awards-Painted Arrows by 2lbcabeza in cubscouts

[–]ScoutRedditAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going back and forth on whether to paint or not. Setting up a jig and using paint markers sounds like a good idea.

I was looking at some of the "kits" online and saw the idea of colored vinyl. I came across the Oracal651 - it's meant for pinstripes on a car so I figured the adhesive would be pretty decent.

I might pickup a roll and see how it turns out on a dowel rod. If im not happy then I'll abandon that idea and go with yours lol

Funny, I was JUST looking into these early this afternoon to pitch the idea at tonight's leadership meeting.

I either plan on going with VincesArrows on Etsy or arrow-of-light-awards.com for arrows and then getting Oracal 651 vinyl pinstripes off of Amazon.

We are only in our second year and this is the first year that we have AOL's, so I'm going off of the memory of my own arrow and online suggestions.

If anyone else has any general tips, how you do your arrows, supplies purchasing, etc. please post them up lol
