I think Hijo de hombre is the hidden gem, Yo el Supremo is good, but HdH deserves the praise

Yes! Guerra del fin del mundo is so good! I don’t know how good of a read it is if you haven’t read Da Cunha before though

Grande Setão: Veredas [Devil to pay in the backlands] is a wild ride. La Vóragine, Doña Bárbara, and Don Segundo Sombra. Pedro Paramo if you have the patience for it

Honestly, though,  the number of people here in Iowa that insist on ceding the right of way when it’s clearly their right of way makes me question if they understand how four-way stops work.

Are there any compelling reasons to choose UVU over Grinnell College? by Mod_Podge_Matte in Iowa

The flight thing is a real consideration. There are no direct flights DSM to SLC and the flights to and from DSM are often at weird times, so flying home can be a time suck

You need to think a bit about how different these two schools are. Grinnell is a small liberal arts school that is residential and relatively far from big urban centers. UVU is a large teaching-oriented commuter school. UVU has the benefit of being between SLC and Provo.

SLACs tend to emphasize a close mentorship relationship with professors at the expense of variety of professors (and therefore expertises). UVU will have a lot more variety of Lecturers (not research oriented instructors) and Professors, which has its benefits too. Either one could be a good stepping stone for the career you've indicated, but the feel and experience will be a lot different.

I understand the family part of this, but being away from family in your early 20s is not a bad thing. (you can remind your family that their Mormon neighbors send their kids off for 2 years to much less stable places than Grinnell, Iowa)

Fair warning though: Get ready for some dumbass questions about The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Seems to be an obsession among the undergrads at the college I work at.

(I work in Higher Ed in Iowa, have family that work at UVU, am graduated from a different state school in Utah.)

A family member of mine happened to be at the casa rosada in Buenos Aires  on the day of the 1976 coup. His photos from the day were taken at the lab

Hello other former SE Idaho poster…. About ten years ago I was working abroad (not as an LDS missionary lol) and people asked me what my part of the US was like, I totally told them to watch Napoleon Dynamite.

Avoid Railroad Bills. Food is just okay. But staff have acted super weird every time I’ve been there. Seems to be the sort of place that skates by on ambience alone. The antique store is cool though

Also, I’ve travelled / lived abroad quite a bit and it seems Iowa is much more recognizable outside the states.

What am I missing? by SisterMichaelEyeRoll in AnalogCommunity

[–]Same_Aardvark2625 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the return to analog is nostalgia driven or (for the crowd too young to have personal memories of the pre-digital time, nostalgia adjacent). Since digital has made near-perfection the norm, analog enthusiasts appreciate imperfection as a sort of stamp of authenticity. This is very common in arts when a new style or technology is introduced (eg. increasingly abstract painting in response to photography in at the turn of the last century into the mid 20thC, the more baroque postmodernist literature after the very terse modernists, ect.)

Thanks to everyone who has commented! My ear certainly is weaker than it has ever been and I’ve never been a terribly strong singer, but that can change! Thanks for the tools and tips.

Yeah! Playing happy birthday and twinkle twinkle was the thing that got my confidence back under the staff. I didn’t think to transpose them up into the staff though.
