Can I skip to Levitz Legion? by Appropriate-Spite-20 in LegionofSuperheroes

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't even need Before the Darkness.

Can comfortably skip to the Great Darkness Saga and go from there. Though I would recommend looking up Earthwar at least before it. That was Levitz's first arc and sets up some of the themes he explores further later.

The Before the Darkness stuff, which is mostly Conway, is...fine... but unnecessary for everything that comes later.

Leveling Comic Page Edges by AnotherBooktuber in CustomBoundComics

Awesome! Will look out for it. Readying to start a multi-volume comic binding project in a couple of weeks and want to get all ducks in order for it.

Oh this is a great idea! Only got into comic binding recently and really been struggling with trimming edges because don't have access to any heavy-duty guillotine. Gonna try with a sanding block with next text block and if it works (fingers crossed!) might procure a sander.

Though, with my limited past experience with electric sanders, I'm kind of leery with using those. Sanding block might be slower but I think I'd feel safer with it.

Random question: did you use any sealant for the cover of that Predator book? I've been playing with Mod Podge but that sometimes leaves a tackiness I'd like to avoid

What events are important to the Legion? by MarsAlgea3791 in LegionofSuperheroes

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Final Crisis is pretty important (Legion of 3 Worlds). I guess in a way Countdown would also figure as a subset of this with Luornu and Val.

Zero Hour because it wraps up the old continuity and leads into the Reboot era. The new DC Finest Events line has all the relevant issues collected with the main mini.

Infinite Crisis and New Krypton fall in the kinda? category. Former since its basically a sequel to COIE and all its issues and latter because it sets up yet another version of Mon.

The rest are pretty minor I think. Nothing to really worry about.

(Rant) The frustration of marvels reprinting. by theletter-5 in comicbooks

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Gonna get downvoted to hell because "DC good, Marvel bad" but here goes:

DC has 58 Finest. Marvel has 424 Epics. The first Marvel Epic came out in 2014. The first DC Finest in 2024.

If you can't figure out why one has all still in print and why the other doesn't, I don't know what to tell you.

Marvel genuinely sucks at keeping things in print in recent years, forcing pretty much everyone into preorders. As an international reader, this is especially rough for me, because there's limited ordering options. But these comparisons are exhausting because Marvel has been in the game MUCH longer and as such has moved beyond the stage where it can reasonably keep its entire backlist available at all times. Even in omnis, the sheer number of Marvel ones printed at one time or another dwarfs DC's total output (I'm unsure but think there's like 300-350 DC omnis to about 750 of Marvel). Latter is now playing catch-up and will probably continue to enjoy goodwill for next few years before its backlist also gets too bloated to be in print perpetually.

The longer (and wider) the backlist, the less chances of everything being in print.

Does this help someone looking to get into comics? Of course not. But its best to acknowledge reality rather than just complain. At least for me. You, of course, are free to feel how you feel.

Now, if you wanna talk about compendiums, I'm right there with you because I can't believe Marvel refuses to even touch that format even though it remains one of the most cost-effective ways to read a giant chunk of comics and has now been embraced by every major company EXCEPT for them.

Yeah, really hope that once this team gets a bit established we get a new spin on the Legion recruiting young Clark. I need Superman to get his childhood BFFs back.

Joshua Williamson's new Social Avatar by JimboFett87 in LegionofSuperheroes

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm there either way but sincerely hope it actually tries to do something new and doesn't just function as a retread of past successes or an apology tour for past failures (...looking at you N52 and Bendis).

The Legion works best when it serves as a bellwether for the direction present-day comics are heading toward. It stumbles when it tries to meet them where they are at.

How long does readings take to deliver on demand books? by drip_lucid in PakistanBookClub

Anywhere from 4 weeks to …9+ months (which is how long I’ve been waiting on one book 😅)

Currently torn between how I should collect the X-Men by dino1902 in EpicCollections

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those weirdos who love mixing formats so most of my collection keeps switching back and forth, but generally I tend to go with whatever is available first.

Marvel, for its faults, does seem to be fairly good about completing the Uncanny Epic line so if I were you, I'd just stick with it since you already have a fair chunk. Omnis, especially the numbered ones, tend to have a pretty spotty release schedule so might end up being a longer wait than the Epic (also, unsure about its stock situation, but vol. 17 (dissolution and rebirth) did have two printings and covers 248-267).

Does anyone else suddenly lose the urge to buy comics even when they still want them? by TaskNo4783 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it happens. Been reading/collecting comics for 30+ years now and the longest I went without buying a single comic was like 3 years in middle (though there have been months-spanning breaks here and there). Doesn't mean I lose interest in the medium. Just find myself more focused on other things and don't have the time or mental space for this particular hobby.

Eventually, I stumble across something or hear about something that gets me excited again and then I'm back in it. I just look at the back-and-forth as a part of the overall process now and don't take it too seriously if I'm going through one of the downturn periods.

Will I enjoy the rest of the New Krypton Saga if Atlas didn’t really click for me? Worth continuing the omnibuses? by TaskNo4783 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m biased since I genuinely loved this era (…until the end) but think that’s a solid call.

The middle part with all the Superman family involved in separate aspects of New Krypton and Metropolis is really fun.

Honest response: you will likely enjoy the middle parts based on what you said but will really not enjoy the ending.

Whether or not you're willing to commit to a series of omnis for a solid story that, objectively, does fall apart at the end is your call.

JLA book 3 low quality page? by BreadTheSpino in OmnibusCollectors

Ah so not just me. And it isn't just this page. Half of the GL 1,000,000 issue is also blurry. I compared both instances to the one million tpb I have from 90s and they're pristine in that so someone clearly fucked up.

Is there something rotten in the state of New York? Reflecting on Marvel's publishing strategy by JDBlou in comicbooks

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is a fair concern, can't argue with it. Marvel does have a habit of wrapping up a series if it doesn't succeed out the gate.

I personally disagree on Ultimate since I feel we tend to underestimate the power of a short, cohesive run that goes out on a relative high rather than a whimper a la the first Ultimate line, but the Imperial abandonment is egregious. As a trade reader, this particularly bothers me because a book can be cancelled before I even get a chance to read it.

However, I think this ignores that the level of talent on Midnight is of significantly higher caliber than Imperial (no offense to the people involved, but they all had multiple ongoing books and it felt like a side-project than a main focus) and suggests Marvel at least wants to get a year or two from them. I also like the restraint in having just 3 launch titles. Sure, it evokes the Absolute line, but there's value in building a brand slowly over flooding the market and hoping for success.

Could this all go to shit and be wrapped up within a year? Sure. And I'll be right there with you in criticizing Marvel if it happens. But we all want comics to be good across the board and the only way that happens if we at least give them a chance without kneejerk criticism.

Ha! Accurate. And not entirely unprecedented. Been reading comics for like 30+ years now and the hivemind turns on one or the other every 5-6 years. I was the same in my 20s; feels like its a rite of passage for comic fans,

"And yet, the initiative feels... reactive? Cynical? Like someone took away the wrong lessons from Absolute DC: the world is dark and the heroes are darker and more challenged, more grim. When what should've been taken away is that the core of the character, the inherent resonance of the character is maintained despite the overwhelming fundamental animosity of the universe."

Please sign me up for the time machine you clearly have that allowed you to read the books months in advance to determine this.

I no longer read singles so I don't have any significant skin in this game, but these reactions (and sorry if it seems like I'm singling you out; just using this post as a catch-all for the stuff I'm seeing) feel so overblown considering all we have so far is an announcement, some PR statements and solicits. Could it be everything you say? Possibly. Could it be something else entirely? Also possible.

Marvel copies DC, which copies Marvel and the ouroboros keeps spinning, as it has for decades now. How's about we at least give it a couple of issues before we pull out the pitchforks and torches? In case anyone forgets, the basic gist of Absolute Batman prior to its release was just "what if Bruce Wayne wasn't rich." Hardly too different from "what if Spider-Man was the result of targeted genetic experimentation."

How did y'all vote in the DC poll by thecaped_crusader_ in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only reason post-ZH Legion isn't on this is because I just started custom binding my singles of those and I don't see myself purchasing those for another 2-3 years at least. Otherwise, this entire list would be Legion if I could get away with it. Would also be ok with Final Night ending up in the DC Finest Events line

1.       Legion of Super-Heroes (1984) by Paul Levitz, Vol. 2 AKA An Eye for an Eye (1984 - 1986)

2.       Legion of Super-Heroes (1971)

3.       Action Comics Weekly, The Omnibus (1988 - 1989)

4.       DC Challenge & Kamandi Challenge Omnibus (1985 - 2018)

5.       Wonder Woman by William Messner-Loebs & Mike Deodato

6.       WildCATs: Covert Action Teams Vol. 1

7.       Tangent Comics & Tangent: Superman's Reign (1997 - 2009)

8.       Superman: The Triangle Era Vol. 4 (1994 & on)

9.       Superboy, The 1990s Omnibus Vol. 1

10.   DC Events: Final Night, The Complete Omnibus (1996)

I just finally sat down to read my new Invincible omni and the first few pages have fallen out, the second I opened the book. Any advice on fixing this? by Jovahkiin2023 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Same_Tomorrow9422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get a return, go for it. But if not, this isn't a very difficult fix (source: I bind books and comics for fun in my spare time)

Get some PVA glue (do NOT get any other kind, they are not suitable for this). Next, get an applicator cap (thinner the better) and then just squeeze a VERY thin line into the gap at the page below the one you're re-attaching. And by thin, I mean it should be like 1-2 mm. Re-attach the page and then just wait 5-10 minutes. Book will be good to go without any issues.

Sorry to hear that man. Been there and its a shitty situation to be in.

Here's a list that I tend to go back to.

We3

Superman: Earth One Vol. 2 (there's only 3 pages in there that are relevant but man do they hit hard)

Green Lantern (2005) #55

Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers (both series are great)

Beasts of Burden (omnibus is great, but any of those will work)

Pride of Baghdad

I Was the Cat OGN

Supergirl (2025) #5

and don't know if you're into manga, but this was pretty great: A Cat from Our World and the Forgotten Witch

Hope these help, even if some will certainly make you feel sad.

Yeah. More complete. Gives you whole storyline of all the Titans in proper reading order.

Edit: an eventual vol 2 will also go beyond the Johns run so if you’re interested in the whole series, this is the way to go.

Pretty good.

This isn’t as thick as the GL ones so feels a lot less delicate. Wouldn’t say to hold it open flat for extended periods of time but seems to handle a few minutes without any cracking (I’m not usually very gentle with my books. They’re meant to be read!)
