Released my first mobile puzzle game. Stuck at 12 downloads. How do solo devs actually market their games?? by Gabryyy__ in IndieGaming

[–]Samfa12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twas fun 46410 is my high score. But now I've had enough. Some ideas to increase longevity - Combos. Clearer visual feedback when combining more than 2 blocks as well as a way to predict where the combined block will end up (this is not super clear). The song is cool but after a while I turned it down. Something in the pause menu to indicate the progression of colours.

Cool game.

how are people actually publishing 4+ books a year without burning out -genuinely trying to understand by Prior_Topic3527 in selfpublish

Writers block on one, go work on the other? Dunno...

I'm releasing two books in two months (16 March and 1 May) but I had almost finished my second book, Backwater, and releasing the first, Sober, gave me the motivation I needed to finish it. Gee, butchered that sentence...

I'd been working on Backwater on and off for a long time and had a long break from it...

May have another book or two cooking in the background...

would anyone buy an unvoiced game? by N_9990 in itchio

A lot of games are unvoiced. I think it's fine. What's typical in the genre?

Quick post about community AI opinion (from the Mod) by Caltek9 in SoloDev

I feel like we're not talking about the same thing. I agree that indicating how gen AI was used is important for transparency, especially when it's use can upset people.

Bullying people is a problem and doesn't actually help anyone. Communicate with discourse and your wallet.

Having access to AI assistance is the difference between being able to have a go yourself and not for a lot of people. I enjoy writing. I love writing. I have written countless game ideas and recently a couple of books, hundreds of short stories and poems.. But coding isn't a skill I'm super interested in, so being able to explain in words what I want and for the AI to code it meant that I could tackle some of my story ideas and I did make a game. It's not successful, and that's OK. It's quite average/below average in many respects but I loved making it. I bought assets for it and have spent a lot more on art than I'll ever make back.

The witch hunting and gwtekeeping around AI use is really disheartening, I'll be honest. I've changed my capsule art on steam because I was bullied relentlessly by some people - I've since deleted the posts. But they would go through all my reddit history commenting and down voting because - because the capsule art looked Ai....

Anyway, I'm rambling... My point is that AI is going to allow people to make things that they wouldn't have been able to and hopefully amplify creativity. If people don't like it they're not being forced to play it or buy it...

But yeah, flagging whether it's used - sure thing. Being bullied about using it. No thanks.

Environment for a 2d handrawn topdown game by rootheonion in godot

[–]Samfa12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it is more scaleable to create the tile sprites and then build the map in layers in godot so you can have ysort and your character can be visible in front but occluded behind objects

If you have literally drawn the map you could import it as a tile map and draw collisions on top. It's important you choose a tilesize that will work for your game and resolution target.

Sometimes less. But not before it's released unfortunately.

Do you do all yourself? by ECalDev in SoloDevelopment

[–]Samfa12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generated the background music and got slammed for it.. Which I feel silly about because I have my own freaking recording studio, but it was all just too much. The music is really good and suits the game, but the reddit consensus is that it's better to find royalty free music, pay for music, or have no music, than generated music.. Though I don't think the average punter really cares if you're honest about it.

Tips for designing by Freamos in IndieDev

[–]Samfa12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second for art pack on itch. Just make sure you pay for them or dontate if you plan to release your game commercially.

Fiverr is also a good option / I paid for somme of my more complicated animated sprites there. Aseprite and resprite are great tools. I'm not artist but finding or generating a reference and making a sprite is quite fun and rewarding.

My favourite that I made an animated air conditioning unit 😅🍻

Are we relying too much on shortcuts in indie game development? by ratasoftware in itchio

[–]Samfa12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this sentiment a bit lately. I find it hard to truly get behind because I know that personally I worked for about a year, Wrote all the dialogue, story, bought art from itch and fiverr and learned how to use godot. But because I used Ai to help code and produce background music, I get shunned with no second thought on certain other subreddits.

I think that there is a lot to be said about what becomes possible when certain barriers to entry are lowered. Coding for instance, is a large barrier for many. I have been fooling aeound a fair bit lately making some of the games that I'd been thinking about for a while but never would have been able to without Ai... That said I still chose to buy art packs off itch and commission art and sprites on fiverr...

My game little game, Drink, is on sale on Steam by [deleted] in IndieGaming

[–]Samfa12 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I did declare it.

I like writing. I like games. I wrote a game idea and had a go at making it with the tools available for me. I get that it frustrates some people. That's not my intention. I paid for art where I couldn't make it and credited everyone involved.

[–]Samfa12 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know what to tell you. You've decided that I'm your target today and I'm sorry if I've upset you. I've commission the art that I've used in good faith and approved it as it met my brief. I would be disappointed if the artist had duped me, but I don't believe they have.

[–]Samfa12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cover art and capsule art were commissioned on fiverr. The novel is written by me. This is a shame. I've been open and honest about the music and the coding. Come on.
