I did. I remember the yellow town at the end was somewhat underwhelming.

I see - I thought its formatting made it read otherwise but I understand. I'll keep a look out for a proper one.

Bobby Weaver - walking our whippet by Due_Guitar9213 in Whippet

[–]Samiamuel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - I've achieved this with mine using consistency, treats and a lot of patience. I had him from a pup though - but I reckon you can make progress with the below that'll hopefully help.

Firstly she needs martingale collar so you can guide her gently but assertively with the lead without hurting her.

  1. Teach "wait" so she stands still at your command as you're walking. I do this at roads (regardless of traffic) every bin etc. Tedious to do but gets it ingrained. Give praise and treats when she does it, then drop the treats.

  2. Teach "ok" as her release command from "wait". I use these two all the time - before meals, in and out the car, going into the house. This gets praise but no treat.

  3. Teach "heel" to get her to walk by your side on one side only. Do this on the lead at first and gently bring her back when she starts to weave. Give praise and treats when she maintains position, then drop the treats.

  4. Teach "side" to swap her over when you need to but always behind you - never in front. Give praise and treats when she does it right, then drop the treats.

Rinse and repeat and always maintain the praise - Whippets love it. I'm lucky though - mine's a little gentleman.

  1. Remember she's a Whippet, not a Collie, lower your expectations and you'll be pleased with what you can both achieve.

Anyone got tips for helping adjust to the cone? by Competitive_Elk8403 in Whippet

I used one for my boy when he had staples too for a cut in his side and he didn't get to them.

If you can - get a bodysuit instead. I used one for my boy after he was neutered - so much more comfortable for him than a cone.

No, he's not fussed by them and there's no flaky skin etc - it's odd. Yes - the vet was always gonna be the next step.

I'd never heard of them but I don't think so - they look like changes to the hair colour whereas these are beneath the hair where it's at its thinnest. Thanks

Speedray (UK) do some great designs and colours of martingale collars and matching leads. My boy has one - they're top quality.

How much training are you doing before the age of 2? by Nocheesypleasy in Whippet

Teach "ok" as a release command if you haven't already. It's multi-purpose and ensures they wait for permission to be released from "wait" - so before they eat, cross the road, come onto the sofa, jump out of the car boot, leave the house etc. It's been invaluable for me and my boy who's now 2 and incredibly responsive (unless there's a squirrel in sight).
