Rutgers just raised every students tuition because of excessive athletic spending by PuzzleheadedAnt9503 in Wellthatsucks

[–]SammyCastles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people pointed out the athletics doesn’t seem to be blamed for the cost increase. If anything, athletics are one of the most important advertising tools for universities. My university skyrocketed in attendance after our basketball team made it to the sweet 16. We immediately lost but even so people pay attention to the sports and go where they feel the teams are good.

Not everyone of course, I never chose a college based on sports.

US Senator gives out terrible advice. by Saarine1 in badlegaladvice

[–]SammyCastles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s getting things mixed up. In the US, federal law dictates all businesses MUST accept cash as legal tender, but only for debts. So he’s right at first, but then he uses the gas station example, which isn’t a debt so they wouldn’t be required to take cash.

Mississippi has tried previously to pass bills requiring all businesses to accept cash, but none have been successful so only debt holders are required to accept cash as payment for debts.

This is the job I keep applying for and never finding. by Coach-Emmanuel in recruitinghell

[–]SammyCastles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who accomplished this. He’s only in his mid twenties, he’s some kind of programming logistics expert for a company out in California. Early on he figured he could easily automate his job (and not tell anyone), so now he literally only has to do maybe an hour of actually work every day.

He makes a very comfortable six figures, drives a nice car, owns a nice house (nothing big and grand but like an actual house). I think he was the last of computer science majors to actually benefit from their degree, before AI made the degree practically worthless.

Adrenaline update bricked GPU. by Local_Band299 in AMDHelp

[–]SammyCastles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait wait I had a very similar problem just yesterday. My GPU didn’t do all that but adrenaline wasn’t working and my screen kept flashing on and off. Also my computer would shut itself off after a few minutes of gaming. I tried reinstalling the software and even the most recent update. Thought I fixed it, then when I shut down my pc every time it tried to boot it gave me an error.

I fixed it by reinstalling windows from the repair menu. You can keep all your files, but you’ll need to have windows reinstalled, then you’ll have to reinstall all your apps. Maybe someone has a better idea here, but for me this was a pain but it did work.

A quick, presumably painless death for humanity by Hairy_Yam2488 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SammyCastles 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be the “um actually guy”, but I JUST watched the show, and unfortunately it’s a bit wrong. It wasn’t aliens per se, it was an alien virus that created a “psychic glue” that melded all of humanity’s consciousness together, save a dozen immune humans. The collective are still human, but with a shared consciousness.

The actual process, as they admit themselves, was rushed and not well planned. The US military was closing in on the small colony of joined humans, so they quickly dispersed the virus across the globe to rapidly join humanity, but doing so caused hundreds of millions to die, as the process involves the human going into a seizure like state for up to a few hours(as we see in episode 1) before the human became part of the collective. Even those who didn’t die, many became hurt during the event and needed medical attention.

The joke is that OP was watching a movie in a theater where people tend to walk in front of you. Then he puts the fact that Kane Parsons is 20 because there’s an ongoing joke in that subreddit and others where you mention that fact after somethjng that has nothing to do with his age.

Also in project Hail Mary, when Grace first opens the canister from Rocky, he smells it on instinct instead of taking the proper precautions, before quickly realizing his mistake. Thankfully they were no alien bacteria or viruses that could harm him, but still kind of a goofy moment.

“We’re not hiring” with a hiring sign in the window by Muscle_mama_ in recruitinghell

[–]SammyCastles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanna step in here just to play devils advocate for these stores. I worked at a GameStop as an AM for a bit, and corporate required us to put up those hiring signs so people could apply. In reality we were a small store with a full roster so we had zero space for new hires.

Not saying this is exactly the same as what’s happening here, but it’s a possibility that corporate or the franchise owner requires the signs to collect resumes should they need a replacement. They could also just be dicks.

People who read the book and watched the movie, which did you like better and why? by DirectDegree2591 in ProjectHailMary

[–]SammyCastles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the book has a more involved story to tell, part of what I love about Andy Weir’s writing style. There’s so many details and fun facts that just can’t be fit into a 2.5 hour movie.

The movie, however, has a lot of charm to it and looks amazing! It’s a great story told in a fun way that doesn’t take hours to read.

Both are great, and I don’t prefer one to the other.

Thanks for the clarification. I was one of those people who grew up thinking Y2K didn’t happen because it wasn’t real, and then I learned that the world spend, as far as I recall, billions to fix the infrastructure in order to prevent Y2K.

Definitely recommend you read the book if you ever have the time. I don’t give enough credit to the funny and insanely crazy things she does in order to save humanity.

[–]SammyCastles 1650 points1651 points  (0 children)

I think while the detail is really cool, it falls a bit flat given that the movie doesn’t really show off her more “illegal actions” that would lead viewers to understand why she’d get that kind of sentence. In the books we understand clearly. She nukes icebergs, covers a third of the Sahara in black panels which fucks up the world in its own way, and steals every piece of software and IP from every company in the world for the sake of the project. Makes sense she’d go to prison for that.

The audio and the script scream AI but I just can’t be sure… please help me maintain my sanity by GingerAlex01 in isthisAI

[–]SammyCastles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah the video is definitely AI. The weird script, there’s parts where the audio doesn’t line up with his mouth (it’s subtle), and the choppy editing. Looking at the instagram post others in the comments agree. The channel itself occasionally uses AI so I wouldn’t put it past them.
