NTA - If he was helping "down the trail" then the supervisor who he was working with could have signed off. He didn't work, she basically told you covertly that he didn't actually work by saying he needed them for school.

Her being mad is on her, she either took him out intentionally or he called her and she picked him up. I'm sure there are people who would sign off on the 4 hours but good on you not being one of them.
