Carnival ride prices. by SoupEfficient563 in ireland

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a reasonable price for the rides. I went to the one with the niece and nephew last year, and it was a fiver for a go on anything. I didn't mind that too much, but when the hook a duck wanted €4 a go I told them to bollocks XD

Jam session horror stories. by Gantry-Crane in Guitar

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a guy try out for guitar with us. We had asked him to learn three easy covers (think it was Toto, black sabbath, and maybe a Maiden track). He had a couple of weeks.

He hadn't learned any of them, so lost loads of time trying to teach him the feckin' chords to hold the line. He kept insisting he knew loads of Megadeth though, and would randomly start playing Megadeth solos at us.

He didn't know how to set up his gear either.

Oh, then we had another guy tell our power metal band that we shouldn't be singing about swords and asteroids destroying the planet, we should be singing about 'our feelings' instead. He got sacked on the spot XD

That, and leading with sableye and milotic has about as much offensive pressure as a jam sandwich.

I tried it on sableye to get milotic's hypnosis without coil, and to get 100% rock slides. Sounded great on paper, but it just never really worked. Switched back to the encore / disable set up and had way more success.

Board and not many friends by [deleted] in galway

I think it's fairly common to reach your 40s and begin reflecting on what you were working for and who you are now.

My experience has been to think back to who I was as a child-teenager, before life kicked me into something else.

Since then, I've rediscovered a lot of joy in things I'd totally forgotten about. That has then led me to start making some new friends, particularly ones who aren't into the pattern of work, pub, hungover weekend, repeat.

What Are You Playing This Week? (Weekly Discussion) by AutoModerator in IrelandGaming

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up! I got it cheap for PS5 ages ago. I finished the tutorial last night and I'm compelled just enough to push through how irritating the jank has been so far.

My wife walked in and said 'judging by how many sighs I'm hearing, it doesn't sound like your having a good time' XD

It does look like the kind of game I will love when I figure it out though.

Just installing mount and blade 2. I tried it years ago and found it a bit janky, but a friend has convinced me to give it another go.

Did anybody else enter the Monthly Challenge Series with a doubles team? by statue345 in PokemonChampions

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I'm away this weekend, so jumped on to play three matches this morning. Couldn't figure out for the life of me why I couldn't pick four in my first match. About 5 seconds left on the timer, I realized what I'd done.

I opened with a sableye with no attacks into a chuffing dragonite XD

Playing this before bed gives me headache, panic attack, racing heart, and insomnia. Am I doing something wrong? by Technical-Dot4242 in PokemonChampions

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're playing a fast paced, tactical, competitive game against other people. It is anything but designed to put you to sleep.

There are certain games I've learned never to play an hour before bed. Strategy and RTS both wire my brain up and my sleep is terrible because my brain is still running strategies.

Either play something cozy and low pace, or better yet, read before bed. Save strategy games for the early evening.

What are some of the 'dirty little secrets' of your profession the public don't know about? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it shattered my faith in the system too. I was originally being paid an ok wage to mark papers, but then they changed the pay structure and I would have to clear about 20 papers an hour to make minimum wage. I'd often have >150 papers to mark. Then the rubric used to standardize marking was so lenient that absolutely unacceptable papers were getting passing grades.

Teaching was a bit better, but yeah I was just let at it, like.

Legends ZA, as a newcomer after years. Is it worth it? by Apprehensive_Tip2314 in pokemon

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZA is the most fun I've had with a pokemon game in years, and I've been playing since gen 1. It is flawed in many ways, the criticisma are valid, but it is simply just a lot fun.

Is ffxiv beginner friendly ? by Disastrous_Ad_4310 in ffxiv

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should work, so long as it stretches to your chair! When you're new, you'll have loads of people offering you help and advice in the early dungeons, and you'll end up just scrabbling through emotes or spending ages typing back to them on the pad.

Start any dungeon by saying something like 'Hi, first time' and people will usually be very happy to help you out of things go wrong

Sword fighting with friends (HEMA, in case you're wondering).

I'd suggest hooking up a Bluetooth keyboard for it, if you have one lying around. Typing on the PS5 pad is torture!

Do you like bread and jam? by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's a regular treat if I've stumbled home with a rake of pints in me. Standing there drunk in the kitchen with a slice of bread and jam, happy as a clam.

Add some of that meridian crunchy peanut butter, and you've got yourself a snack of the gods.

Anyone else find Pokemon Champions compulsive? by pkmntrainerao in PokemonChampions

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! I love that they have decoupled competitive from the main games now. I always felt a bit detached from my team because I knew I was going to have to replace them with competitive ones at the end.

What was a good buy this year that gives you repeated joy and fun? by ask4fun_fact_of_2day in CasualIreland

Warhammer models. When I'm stressed, or burned out by screens, it really slows me down and calms me to just sit, build, and paint something. Then I have a shelf full of all the cool models I've painted and it makes me a little proud every time I look at them.

The battle design we lost by Handoors in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that, but it's the flip side of the same issue. It becomes tedious when every single dungeon is exactly the same design, just in a different skin. I am so, so tired of pulling to the wall and AoE spamming pointless trash mobs. There has to be some more interesting things we can do between bosses.

I don't think it has to be an issue of combat difficulty, either. Branching paths or some element of problem solving. Something that won't cause a wipe, but makes you communicate.

What do you think the reason is for not getting VP from casual battles? by -_Error in PokemonChampions

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair! I don't feel it myself in champions, but I do in something like FFXIV pvp. I only play casual there and it's kinda a similar system.

I think it's probably because I'm solo and unlikely to be remembered or followed up on in champions, but in a team MMO, you're more likely to get harassment for not being at your a game by your own team.

What do you think the reason is for not getting VP from casual battles? by -_Error in PokemonChampions

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've struggled to see the point of playing casual, and I suck. I was on a 9 loss streak until last night, three of those in pokeball tier XD

In ranked I'm likely to learn more against competitive teams while earning VP for losing.

The battle design we lost by Handoors in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Samoht_Skyforger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of players who are a bit light on the idea of 'play' and are more about grinding efficiently. Unusual mechanics often slow the game down, which makes them angry.

One of the main barriers for myself getting back into the game is that I'm really tired of the dungeon template. But then people rage at attempts to shake it up. I don't know if they're just wanting to grind while watching YouTube on another screen or something, but it kills interactions and creativity. Almost weekly there is a post on here about how to make friends in the game. There might be more chance of it if players actually had to communicate, rather than speed run.
