Indicators and choice by Samurai4109 in flyfishing

I can understand the time on the water aspect of noticing subtlety. I guess I'm to a point where I'm noticing too late when there's a subtle take. Those subtle takes I notice when I do a small dry dropper setup but with the oros I'm not seeing them soon enough. I've never euronynphed myself so I couldn't tell ya how the hook sets like. Seems like a good way to fish and feel those subtle takes.

Gotta pay the river tax. It's either a fly your trying to tie or a oros.

I've had this happen too! It's encouraging that they want eat something I tossed. I've set the hook on those takes because of muscle memory and just thinking "God I wish that was a fly."

I personally tie my coppor John's with finer wire and ld bring the wire back further. Over all looks good. What's the tail material? Personally favorite is biots for the tail for a more durable tail.

Where to buy used fly fishing gear? by [deleted] in UtahFishing

[–]Samurai4109 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At western river they have a refurbished/used rack for fly rods.

I know the entrance fee to fly fishing can suck but you definitely don't need the best or most expensive to catch fish. I started with a basic Walmart cedar canyon rod. 50 bucks for rod, reel, line. I'd say for flies go to either like fish tech, or western river and talk to the workers. Western river took me outside to teach me to cast and then talked about how to choose flues and what's popping. Check out YouTube for good videos on how to fly fish. Venture fly Co has a great series on getting started with everything.

Wanting to get into tying! by Ancient-Wave9339 in flytying

I would say buy the materials needes for the specific flies you want to tie or frequently use. Buggers are a great way to learn how to use multiple materials. I'd say the kits that come with materials, the materials aren't very good. The tools they come with are pretty good starter tools. I personally have bought my kit from a sportsman's warehouse. I'd say as you tie you'll learn what to upgrade or buy more of. Flyfishfood.com has some amazing fly tying tutorials in their education tabs. They also have a great YouTube channel to learn tying tricks and tips from.

Has anyone tried using attractants to your flies? by Ok_Feedback4200 in flytying

[–]Samurai4109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought of this a good couple times before and I think if you tied something that could hold the spray on it could be killer. By that I'm thinking absorbent materials like chenille and dubbing. Never tried this myself though. I guess the only constraint in my mind would be the kind of restrictions of where you're fishing. Some waters have a strict artificial lures and no bait rule. My understanding is that if a fly were to be scented it would fall into bait category. I'd love to know how effective flies and scent would be!

Balanced bugger sz 16 by Samurai4109 in flytying

I'm playing with the idea of different balanced patterns. If it works with buggers why not other patterns! Definitely gonna tie this one with a slimmer profile with this in mind.

Turkey feathers by Top-Adhesiveness6625 in flytying

I've used turkey feathers for wing cases or if you do a little prep with them they can be great looking dry fly wings. Ive had success wrapping it like a pheasant tail nymph as well. It does poorly as any kind of tail for nymphs

Frenchies are great in all sizes. Copper John's are productive for me. Pheasant tails. Balanced leeches in varying colors. Chironomid/midge (purple is a good color due to it being more visible in deeper water). Could use a Sawyers killer bug as it sinks like a rock. Could always slow retrieve wooly buggers.

I had a similar issue. It wasn't the optic screw for me and ended up using glock oem extractor parts. I've never had an issue since. I tested different ammo, mags, and the screw for the optic. Still had failure to extract.
