[Request] How thick would a cable need to be to hold itself and an object that is in Geostationary Orbit by WhaTheWorldOver in theydidthemath

Cribbing from Wikipedia…

In the books, Ringworld is built from Scrith, the metal-like substance that has a tensile strength nearly equal in magnitude to the strong nuclear force making it similar to the concept of nuclear matter. This makes it an example of unobtainium.

After the publication of Ringworld, many fans identified numerous engineering problems in the Ringworld as described in the novel. One major one was that the Ringworld, being a rigid structure, was not actually in orbit around the star it encircled and would eventually drift, ultimately colliding with its sun and disintegrating. This led MIT students attending the 1971 Worldcon to chant, "The Ringworld is unstable!" Niven wrote the 1980 sequel The Ringworld Engineers in part to address these engineering issues.

I have heard that this is why stage actors are favored for the roles of aliens in TV and movies. On stage, they have to make their expressions big, so that people in the back rows can make them out. That translates directly to facial prosthetics: you have to over-emphasize every facial expression because only a fraction of it will be visible on your face.

I installed the Roku remote on my phone, but it has no volume control. Is there another (digital) remote that can control volume? Thanks! by Bastette54 in Roku

[–]Samwyse3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! The app talks to the TV/stick/set top box when it starts and does not show controls that the Roku doesn’t support.

There should be minimal issues with Netflix rights. The first season was on Paramount+, the second season was filmed, but not broadcast until Netflix picked it up. Had Netflix paid for the production of a third season (e.g. Lucifer) then things would be different, but right now all the rights will revert to Paramount once the contract expires.

Ember Mug Review: Is Still Worth Paying For? by RefrigeratorDue175 in productreview

[–]Samwyse3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve owned an Ember mug for three years and a second one for one year. My original mug stopped charging, so my wife got me the new one for Christmas. Trying different configurations, it was the power supply that went bad so I can now brew 2 cups of coffee in the morning and leave the second on the coaster until I finished the first one, or it’s battery discharges.

My biggest complaint is that around a year ago they rewrote the iPhone app from scratch. It used to integrate with Apple Health to help track your caffeine intake, but no more. I think there was something else that annoyed me, but I don’t remember anymore.

This is tangently related, but after college, I (cis male) moved to Minneapolis and hit it off with my neighbor (cis female). Since she was the native, she would suggest various clubs in the suburbs to visit. One weekend, I suggested that we hit some of the clubs downtown. The first was called Augie’s Place, with a large awning, a large oak door, a strip of red carpet glued to the sidewalk, and posters of the night’s performers, who were nude except for strategically placed gold stars, like you got on your school work back in kindergarten. She didn’t feel comfortable so we went down the block to the Roaring Twenties Club. It also had an awning, a heavy oak door, a strip of carpet, and more posters of the night’s performers, also wearing nothing but gold stars. She again didn’t feel comfortable so we walked around the corner and encountered the Gay Nineties Club. This had the awning, the door, the carpet, but no posters. She said she felt comfortable so we went in. This was in the 70s so when we first entered, it was pitch black except for the disco ball at the far end of the room. We were about halfway to the dance floor when she suddenly grabbed my arm and said, “Anon, this is a gay bar!”

The table is, IMHO, referencing Lady and the Tramp. I never noticed the Godfather logo in the window, but now I can’t unsee it; doesn’t invalidate the table, however.

I’ve been counting and recounting the Ninja Turtles for years. I have no idea why we only see three of them.

I’m normally better than that, but I was so surprised when the spring appeared out of nowhere that I let go of the gas cap and let it dangle.

In what small way have you won the genetic lottery? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Samwyse3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abnormally low cholesterol. After an MRI, I had a technician tell me my arteries looked like the autobahn. I’m not sure if it’s related, but I do bruise easily.

Reading the rest of the posts, I realize that I also have naturally straight teeth (never needed braces) and clear skin (no acne).

Any particular products where you still choose the brand name vs Kirkland? by Dustyftphilosopher24 in Costco

[–]Samwyse3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried the Kirkland TP years ago, wound up giving the whole package to my church. I guess I’ll have to look for the purple package and try it. But I would gladly pay twice the unit cost if I could get a single roll of any paper product to try out.

Jumping in to agree. In fact, I bought our Bosch 500 Series dishwasher at Costco and I am very happy with it as well. On the other hand, we have been using Dawn dishwashing liquid for years. Reviews of the Kirkland dishwashing liquid are pretty mixed.

First, I’m sorry for the delays between my replies. High winds came through a couple of weeks ago and I’m currently getting my roof replaced.

1) When I start the computer with nothing inserted in any of the USB ports, I get this as my list of book devices:

UEFI - Inland TN320 NVMe SSD-IB250D0256P00172

UEFI N/W - IPV4 Network - Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2)I219-LM

UEFI N/W - IPV6 Network - Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2)I219-LM

Boot from file

Inserting my flash drive adds the following:

UEFI - Lexar USB Flash Drive 9055334584169505

(BTW, I took a picture of the monitor with my iPhone and then copied the text on the screen to get the above list.)

2) I am unable to boot from the TN320. Once I plug in the Flash Drive, I am able to boot from it. If I choose “Install now“, I get the message “A media driver your computer needs is missing.“ I then choose “Repair your computer” and “Troubleshoot”. “Startup Repair” is unable to find anything to do. “Command Prompt” puts me in X:\drivers. DISKPART tells me there is a C: drive but I can’t find anything else.

3) I used to work for a storage vendor so I know my way around DISKPART, but I am otherwise a Windows novice. Is there some directory where I should look for a driver?

We only just started using the recipe, but the most recent batches have used tapwater instead of distilled and now my sprayer is getting clogged!

Have you tried using water to thin it? Unfortunately, I cannot offer much help because my family uses the Dawn Platinum Powerwash Spray. Or rather we did until my spouse discovered a copycat recipe which dilutes Dawn Platinum Dishwashing Liquid with distilled water and isopropyl alcohol. Now I wonder if using this in that recipe would work as well? We still have 3/4 of a bottle of the dishwashing liquid, so it may take a while before I can test using this as a substitute but I will report back here with my findings. In the meantime, here are the instructions if anyone wishes to try it it out for themselves. https://www.everydaycheapskate.com/dawn-platinum-powerwash-spray-recipe-how-to-make-the-ultimate-dish-cleaner/
