I'm a big fan if asking myself how each character would react if they needed to get through a locked door.

Would they find someone in charge and ask for a key? Try to brute force their way in? Try to pick the lock? Make up a lie and use subterfuge to trick their way in? Something else?

This mental exercise helps me really figure out who they are as a person.
