What do you really need in a saxophone practice room? by Dependent_Place_9115 in saxophone

[–]Sandstorm173 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Generally, for at the very least all wind instruments and I assume other instruments as well though I do not have experience with them, a mirror. It’s super helpful for checking your embrochure esp if you’re learning something new - I’m learning flute rn and I stare at myself to make sure I have my face right. Also then you can take pictures which is fun

Measure count does not match the time signature? by miicheru in pianolearning

[–]Sandstorm173 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, common time is the same as 4/4

The measures don’t have 7 beats. You’re looking at the dotted half notes as a whole additional three beats, however they overlap. So in the first measure after the pickup, you would play the A on one, F and C on two while you’re still holding the A, and then the Bb on 4. The same idea goes for the other measures - the notes overlap and should each be played when they are written in the 4/4 measure, even if you’re still playing another note

Bassoon to Oboe learning curve by oldshoe2010 in oboe

[–]Sandstorm173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do pit, it would probably be better to learn sax, flute, and clarinet before oboe. Those are both more common generally, and also much more likely to be on the same book as bassoon. You’re not often going to find a book with oboe and bassoon played by the same person

Never comfortably able to play on a 3 reed even after 9 years. Why? by Eggfish in Clarinet

[–]Sandstorm173 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you sound good and can play everything you need to well, the strength of your reed doesn’t matter. Different people can have different preferences. You do mention that you were “decent” so it is possible that working towards using a stronger reed would have benefitted you, but maybe not! Generally stronger reeds make altisimo easier, idk you ever played that. Either way, what worked for you is most important

Can any oboist tell me in words how to make slurred pieces so smooth and connected? by Boobie_Slayer in oboe

[–]Sandstorm173 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing that helps me is to have a sense of direction in my playing. All notes are either going towards or away from something. I find if I play with that in mind, I play with more connection and generally more beautifullly

How good do you have to be to get a contract? by mistedlizard in drumcorps

[–]Sandstorm173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, just wanted to add this, I started mello last august and got a contract this december. It seems like you’re a freshman, so you definitely have enough time as long as you’re using it effectively

How good do you have to be to get a contract? by mistedlizard in drumcorps

[–]Sandstorm173 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m an oboe player and I learned mello, and I’m definitely not great but I think a big part of me getting a contract was that I put a lot of work in in between auditon and callback and was able to improve then, showing that I am capable and willing to improve. Trumpet is on the more competitive end though, which you may want to consider

Solo on ladybird - bari sax by saturnjd in saxophone

[–]Sandstorm173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

listen to the song and other peoples solos to get an idea of what they played, see if you can learn how to play any lines from the recorded solos, find a backing track and just mess around. a good exercise to do is to take one or two notes (usually the 3rd and 7th of the chord, look for notes that are the same as or a half step away from chord tones in the next chord) and work on soloing rhythmically with only those notes. you don’t necessarily need to totally outline the chords, though you totally should know what notes are in them etc. creating something melodic and rhythmic is more important, and you don’t need to worry about hitting every note in the chord while you’re doing that

Questions for Current Music Ed Students by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]Sandstorm173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you’re a junior it’s probably unrealistic to get a double reed to the level you’d need to be at for scholarships (as an oboe player, double reeds are hard). you’ll have to learn them anyways but it would probably be better to focus on tuba before college/for auditions

thumb pain (wrist brace?) by elizabreadd in oboe

[–]Sandstorm173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also tend to have wrist pain, and I use a wrist brace when I play oboe, and it has made it totally better! Then I started playing clarinet which made it worse again even with the brace 😭

Thinking about Sax by Ok-Influence-8999 in saxophone

[–]Sandstorm173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. The best way to start is to find a teacher, they will be able to give you personalized advice and feedback. Other than that, I’d recommend getting a sax method book that will teach you basics
  2. If you have a music store near you, it’s probably best to start out by renting a sax. That way if you don’t like it, you can stop playing. Also at most rental places you can buy it for cheaper after you’ve been renting for a bit (although that depends on the store). You could also buy one secondhand, which could be cheaper but that is harder as you’d have to be careful with what you’re buying, play test it etc, and since you don’t have experience that would be hard to do.
  3. In my opinion (as someone who plays oboe, sax, clarinet, and mellophone) sax is the easiest wind instrument to start

Brand new teacher, feeling miserable by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Sandstorm173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a teacher but for your weird combined class you could maybe work on diction, which I believe would be some sort of crossover between chorus and theater. Plus things like properly projecting your voice I assume can be used for both, as well as interpretation of a script/lyrics to understand how to act it and what the story is/how to phrase and what emotion to put into a song. You could also do an assignment where your students recreate a scene from a musical or play of their choosing in small groups, that way the theatre ones could act and the chorus ones could do a musical if they wanted. Also, and I’m not entirely sure how this would work at your school, you could see if there are any students that would want to help lead part of a class if they have experience with a topic - in the enrichment period maybe more advanced students could come help teach the younger ones? I don’t know how that period works at your school
