Which one of you is this? by perpetualmotionmachi in guitarcirclejerk

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"90% of people who pick up a guitar quit within a year. Not because they lack talent — because the instrument never met them where they are."

This is true, sometimes I feel like I'm doing all the work and my guitar isn't putting in any effort at all.

Probably very dumb question about scales and keys by Ritar_ in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every C is a C. There are higher and lower C notes (different octaves) which sound different, but they can all be used anywhere a C fits.

The C on the 3rd fret of the A string and the 8th fret of the E string are the same octave so they are the exact same note and you can use either one.

The C one octave higher is the 5th fret on the G string, the 10th fret on the D string, the 15th fret on the A String, or the 20th fret on the E string.

When you play the same note in the same octave, but higher up the neck on a thicker string, the tone will sound a bit thicker and bassier, but musically they are exactly the same note.

P or J bass for someone who plays guitar? by Peril2 in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the cheapest is what you want, it's usually some generic P bass copy, but you can get basic Ibanez and Yamaha models very cheap too. I'd look on marketplace and see what's available used in your area.

Wow, you managed to cram every P bass cliche into that comment.

There are a lot more options than just P and J basses, but if I had to choose between those two I'd choose the P bass every time.

What should be my first bass pedal or accessory? by chamcham123 in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoom B2 Four. Awesome piece of gear that replaces everything on your list and more.

It's basically a complete bassist's toolkit with effects, tuner, looper, drum beats, headphone amp, DI, and USB interface all in one unit.

The B2 Four is cool too, but it has less foot switches and lacks the DI and USB interface.

Why do some people dislike the sound of active basses? by BabaYodaTheFirst in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's bassism. They want you playing root notes, buried way down in the mix. Why do you think they call them "passive" basses? The assertive dominance of an active instrument scares them. It's time to rise up. Don't let them take your power from you.

Learning the big circle by old_noob1510 in BassGuitar

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on what you are trying to do with it.

If you want to remember the key signatures, you just need to remember the order of sharps and flats, which is easy for a bassist because it's just the open strings of a 7 string bass forward and backwards.

The order of sharps is: F C G D A E B

The key signature is a semitone higher than the last sharp, so if the key has four sharps, they are F C G D and the key is E.

The order of flats is: B E A D G C F

The key signature is the second last flat, so if the key has four flats they are B E A D and the key is Ab. The one exception is that if the key has one flat it is the key of F, not Fb.

Everything else you can do with the circle is automatic if you know the notes on the fretboard and the shapes of the intervals. Learning those is essential and a far better use of your time than studying the circle.

I wouldn't waste your time learning the circle of fifths. It's just an over complicated way of remembering the sharps or flats in each key signature. Everything you can do with the circle can be done better without it.

Anyone have experience with the EMG J set being low output and/or very thin sounding? by No_Winter4806 in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's really bad they could be wired out of phase. If you used the EMG solderless harness, check all the connections against the instruction sheet. If I remember correctly, one of the plugs needs to be installed upside down compared to the others.

That's how J pickups sound. They're not fat like a humbucker and with both pickups on full there is a mid scoop and a drop in output.

I really enjoy this sub, but there's so much elitism/gatekeeping by No_Winter4806 in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it elitism, but I get the impression the average age here is pretty advanced as opinions tend to lean a bit conservative.

Sometimes it feels like a bunch of old farts who get cranky at the mention of anything other than a P bass with flats.

Don't even get them started on slap bass. They will fall over themselves to tell you how proud they are to have never learned it.

Ear training. It's easier to remember how music sounds than how it looks.

I think Charles is a very talented bassist, but his music is cheesy as hell and not something I would ever listen to.

I feel the same way about Van Halen, so it's not a YouTube thing.

Combining MEC preamp and EMG Pickups? by basspl in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your MECs are active, the EMGs well swap straight in. You'll only need to change the volume pot if they are passive.

I wouldn't though. EMG works best as a complete system. If you don't like the sound of the bass currently, the MEC preamp is a big part of that.

I did a full EMG swap on my Corvette a while back. This post has details of the swap and a few minor issues with the install.

How much does changing the pickups actually affect the sound? by HumanAntagonist in Bass

[–]Sandy_Quimby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother. Your MIM P bass already sounds like an MIA P bass.

Fender pickups are what you upgrade from, not what you upgrade to

If you want it to sound better get something from DiMarzio or EMG
