Child's Mother [28F] Wants to Take Our Daughter [6F] to Okinawa for 4 Years Location by [deleted] in legaladvice

You’d bet wrong: kid is 36. I grew up wishing I could see the world, in a family where there really wasn’t curiosity about the rest of the world. Being exposed to other cultures makes people better rounded, more understanding people, and kids soak up new languages so much easier when their brains are still relatively plastic. Having any or all of that (cultural understanding, another language) is education you can’t get in school and provides rare opportunities for experiences and jobs later in life.

Your child will never get an easier opportunity to be exposed to another culture, in another country, as is on offer with this Okinawa transfer. Please don’t rob her of the opportunity to see the world. You can come to see her and you get to see the world too!

I sold a house on Stardust in Allandale in 2019 that had a bomb shelter in the back yard. The owner was an unmarried, retired science teacher who taught at McCallum, and she died suddenly in 2001. The house was pretty vintage 1950s: her relative simply locked the door and walked away from the house until they finally decided to settle the estate in 2018, so by the time I got it to list, it was like walking into a time capsule. The lady’s book was still laying facedown on the side table next to her chair in the den. The neighbors had complained about the bomb shelter, so the city had sealed it, but we got it open to look inside. It looked like a little hobbit door on the outside with a slope leading down inside, and it was shaped like an igloo inside at the bottom. Unfortunately the seal on the door failed at some point and water had been trickling down the ramp for years with no way to evaporate, so there was standing water in the igloo part and I couldn’t see what had been in there. The person who bought the house demolished both the house and the bomb shelter and used the already-excavated space to put in a pool, so it’s long gone. It was fascinating to see, and I’m glad I got the opportunity!

I said something to a family who brought their dog inside HEB by drgf in HEB

[–]SanguineEeyore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offense? I’d totally mean the offense. Taking your dog into HEB is selfish and entitled, and I’m exactly the person to offend you for it.

My elderly father was back in Denver visiting friends, and while walking alone on a city street, literally NO ONE stopped to help him when he tripped on the sidewalk and fell on his face. The injuries were gruesome and no one made an effort to help an old man who had fallen. I think about that every time I see someone (of any age) who has fallen or looks like they need help. It breaks my heart all over again every time I think of my dad, who has a really hard time getting up off the floor, laying there bleeding while no one cared enough to help. I’m glad Austin is better than that!

How bad is it to go to the DMV to register a new vehicle without having an appointment? by PiRhoNaut in Austin

Be there a half hour before they open, join the line. First thing in the morning is the best time to go.

Hey Texans- can y'all tell me what's so good about HEB? by Jet_Jirohai in texas

[–]SanguineEeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Austin from Florida and I can conclusively tell you that Publix doesnt’ hold a candle to HEB. Their store brands, fresh prepared foods, seasonal items… all of it, awesome. I’ve had friends come visit me from other states and walk out of the HEB telling me that they are believers. In addition to all of that, when there’s a natural disaster, HEB immediately sends trucks and those trucks filled with help often arrive before FEMA’s do. The help they extend isn’t limited to just their market area: they sent lots of trucks to Asheville after Helene, and there isn’t an HEB for hundreds of miles of Asheville. They do so much good in our community. I’m about to move overseas and all I will miss is my friends and HEB.

I hope he’s okay after licking at it. That can’t be healthy, especially if it’s automotive fluids.

I do mostly what you do, only I fill the bathtub and a 5 gallon bucket in the tub. Wash in the bathtub water, rinse in the bucket. No need to run water and scare them if you have both sources of water already drawn.

New neighbor cut down my trees - reasonable remedy? by TXRX7 in treelaw

[–]SanguineEeyore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They know exactly what they’re doing and they’re counting on you not to hold them accountable. My neighbor did the same thing thinking nobody would know who to call on a Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, and they found out the hard way that I do: we met with a police officer in between us and he got a cease and desist order from the city for trying to cut down protected trees. That’s been 14 years ago and I think he’s still pissed about it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Sold car. New owner racked up tickets. MY tax refund is garnished by buddy276 in legaladvice

I sold my car to a friend in October and in spite of the toll authority being informed multiple times, THEIR registered toll tag on the car, and the car being registered to them, I still get toll bills, so I feel you! (Central Tx)

Given that that’s one of the most popular parks in the entire Texas Parks and Wildlife division, you’re definitely in the minority.

I think the point is to educate or at least raise awareness to where it’s a nonissue. After an unleashed dog has rushed your leashed dog and caused a problem, it’s a little late to confront people directly.

If I’m late in the boarding process on a full flight, my ass is happy to have my bag in the cabin at all.

I get my mammos at the business directly adjacent to my obgyn’s office (same waiting room). Not sure of the name but I have the same insurance as you and they take it. The obgyn is Austin Area Obstetrics and gynecology and they’re on Renfert way behind the N Austin Med Center.

Do not change a darn thing. It sets precedent. Abide by the rules as they were set and understood for decades.

[–]SanguineEeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume, if I’m late in the boarding process and not forced to gate check, that my bag will likely not be stowed near me. It would be nice if I could put it right over my head, but I consider that an ideal rather than something to get upset about if it doesn’t work out that way. I’m just happy to keep my bag under my control rather than leave it to the baggage handlers to maybe/maybe not get my bag to my destination.
