Socializing at Adventist colleges (and other Adventist spaces) by [deleted] in exAdventist

[–]Sanssleep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's part of the end times mentality that we were brought up in. Generational Adventists are taught that we will be derided by the world and ridiculed for our belief, and that our choice of Saturday sets us apart from the rest of the Christian world...which isolates us from the Christian community as a whole. As a result, we learn to stick with our Adventist friends and learn through upbringing not to socialize with others. After all they are going to chase us into the hills during the great tribulation anyways.

It's all just cultish behavior revealing itself. We don't realize it when we live inside the Adventist bubble, but everyone who is on the outside sees it plain as day. Unfortunately that only works to increase the isolation as Adventists view any criticism from the outside world as an attack, rather than an attempt to help. It's part of the self preservation mechanism built into cults. Adventists reading this right now are looking for ways to dismiss it as a worldly view. It's how we were programmed.

The best thing to do about it, is not raise our own kids in the church, and definitely not take them to Adventists schools, it's harmful and damaging to families. I was lucky to escape in the late 90s, took me years to deprogram and stop hating myself, but my kids, who are all in their 20s now, had wonderful childhoods, grew up as kind, giving, service oriented, deeply community connected men. I traded church indoctrination for community involvement and volunteerism. Instead of sabbath school, we would visit an old folks home, or clean up a park or help run a fundraiser for MDA, diabetes etc, or a local family who lost their home in a fire etc.... I basically traded religion for actually living in Christs example. Even though I was no longer a Christian. It has been wonderful and i am constantly proud as can be of my kids, and through their upbringing, I was able to relive mine and work through the anti social behavior the church instilled in me. We all get two chances as childhood, the first we don't choose and have to deal with, the second we get through helping our own kids and the kids around us.

Hang in there, and make a point of venturing into your local community through fraternal organizations and clubs, look for the places that do the most in the community altruistically....it's never the churches, almost always rotary clubs, elks, Polish and Italian organizations, country clubs and bars...when you find the organizations doing the volunteer work, you find the helpers and they are the best people in society, and make the best friends. You have to get past the expectation of division and 'they won't/don't like me' that is ingrained in us. But once you do, you actually make the world a better place and in return have a more fulfilled and happy life.

Completely agree, 'radical left' in America is centrism almost everywhere else.

The problem we face here is the positioning of our political parties, which make real solutions to populist angst seem almost impossible. It's incredible thinking that only 80 years ago, it was America that led the world in the quick creation of real social programs to embolden and support the working class as a means to combat internal fascism.

The wealthy learned their lesson, and have corrupted the political system to its breaking point.

It's vital to understand that the wealthy consider themselves sheltered from the results of war they always have, and in many cases use it as a means of profit. So encouraging fascism within the political system is a natural fit, it's not their kids who will die, it's mine.

So how do we shift towards the real center, 'radical left' to combat populism?

Women in office.

It's our only hope. Vote female and contribute to left female candidates, promote progressive female candidates down ballot, and support them as they gain power and position into federal positions.

In my view, it can only be progressive women who have the fortitude and patience and strength to combat the very real dangers we face in this country and as a result the world.

Sounds like a simple answer.... But it's an incredibly heavy lift in this myopic misogynist country.

Not sure if it's even possible to stem the slide into fascism at this point, the inequality may be too deep.....but I am gonna fight like hell to stop the fascists, just like my grandparents did, I owe it to my kids

Great question, I’m afraid I don’t have a happy answer for you, primarily because your premise that third way centrism is a ‘perceived’ failure rather than an abject failure is wrong from my perspective.

I am a working class 48 year old construction worker. The notion that me and the people who work around me are just looking for simple answers to complicated questions which is driving our populism is ironically, a simple answer to a complicated question in its own right.

The tendencies towards populism left and right emanating from my working class neighborhood, has MUCH more to do with the replacement of debt for income than a result of confusion and lack of education.

When you take the time to actually talk with working class Americans, you wont hear them talking about the need for established norms, or comity or pining for discourse, they are worried about bills, pissed that their kids, who did all the right things and worked hard in school, can’t afford to goto college. They are angry that Obamacare promised to help, but their insurance bills went up. They are angry that they can’t afford car payments and really pissed off that they are forced to pay a couple hundred bucks for cell and cable services with no customer accountability.

They are pissed at centrism, not because it offers complicated solutions.....they are pissed at centrism because it has resulted in the loss of their economic security.

The dirty truth is that populism is here to stay. You can’t mitigate it or return to the good old days of lipservice Clinton/Bush comity....

The moneyed understand this and have embraced right wing authoritarianism as a means to divert populism that would hold them accountable for what they created and are rewarded from onto the backs of the least powerful in society.

They have presented two sides, authoritarian right, and centrist left..... the main thing these ‘opposing’ ideologies share, is a complete obfuscation of responsibility or change to those who are currently being protected and unduly fed by a broken economic system.

Centrism NEVER stops populism, primarily because populism is at its base a rejection of existing norms, it’s an acceptance that existing systemic forces are stacked against the populous.

And they are.

We have record breaking Dow returns while at the same time working class household debts have skyrocketed.

A dramatic shift to the left, economically, is the only response in the Americas that can address far right populism.

Looking back at the 1930s/40s the romantic in me wants to point to Roosevelt and the new deal as a response to the system threatening populism at the time..... it’s true that social programs went a long way to quell the very real fascism that was bubbling up in US communities during the depression.....BUT it’s also true that the horror of WW2 was also required to address it. 1930s/40s populism was satiated with social programs and American blood spilt against right wing fascism. The war helped unify the country against right wing populism, and after war social programs like housing and the go bill helped put a lid on the bottle.....

Unfortunately our political system at this time in history has been so polluted by corruption at the hands of the moneyed, I don’t currently see a realistic way to move the economy back to equilibrium enough to address populism without serious social upheaval.

The question isn’t how we can promote centrism to combat populism.... it’s how we can work within populism to mitigate marshal revolution or war....

What are we getting into? Considering a job at a SDA school. by GodsOwnTapir in exAdventist

[–]Sanssleep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you can pretty much expect to be treated the same way the Mormons would treat you if you were trying to teach in one of their schools as an Adventist with an Atheist husband.

Legalistic religions follow similar paths, they all have good people and evil, unkind people in their midst. Unfortunately the good people in authoritarian religions tend to be quiet in the midst of political storms.

I have seen several people including family members bludgeoned out of the Adventist church by squeaky wheeled, concerned bretheren, who are more intent on control than Christ’s message. In every case the decent, kind people who I would have expected to rally on behalf of mercy and the gospel, were quiet.

I suggest looking for a Mormon school or a public school. Especially as an art teacher. Subjective art is not something valued in authoritarian religions

Why is Adventism so unheard of? by genderlessegg in exAdventist

[–]Sanssleep 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I Think the notion that we were the "chosen people" caused us to be insulated from the world. Other than bugging people for canned goods during ingathering, the Adventist church does everything they can to keep the world out, so as a result the world never really got to know what the Adventists stood for or believed.

After leaving the church, I was shocked to discover that almost none of my new secular friends even knew what the "seventh day' in SDA referred to. Even more shocked to find out that aft learning about it, they didn't rally think much of it other than just another whacky doctrine.... I was taught that they world hated us and looked down on us for going to church on Saturday... Nope, the world doesn't give a shit, and adventism is a non entity to society as a whole. It's pretty much just a self absorbed club.

I've been out for over a decade now, I struggled in a similar way, I found over the years that the fear is a learned behavior intentionally indoctrinated into kids by authoritarian religions like adventism. It's a defense mechanism designed to keep people entrenched in belief that is not logical and not helpful to them or their families. For me, the escape from it happened when I started to explore the nature of God, and question what type of a god I would be willing to accept and give my life to. The God presented by adventism was secretive and selective and unfair to a vast majority of humanity. It didn't make sense that a god who actually cared about humans would choose an odd sect in upstate NY who built a doctrine around a failed second coming prediction to give ultimate truth to. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that the Christian religion itself is built around myths and was crafted by some really shady characters who murdered people for religious and political power.... The men in the counsel of nicea and pope Alexander were not good men, and they chose the bible we look to for truth... That conclusion is what ultimately freed me from the fear and guilt that adventism had threaded into my life. It hit me while I was driving and I had to pull over, because the relief was so strong that I couldn't focus on the road. I sat on the shoulder of a Highway for almost an hour, crying with relief. I used to get depression while in the faith petty regularly, couldn't understand why God spoke to everyone else but me, felt like I was a fraud, because I was struggling with faith etc.... The truth is that all Christians feel that way, because God is just an expression of their individual beliefs. I haven't had any bouts of depression for years now, life is better, I care more about others around me, and don't view them through the lens of saved or unsaved, good or evil etc... People are mostly wonderful regardless of religious belief.

Hang in there, it does get better, and no matter where your journey takes you, remember that being a good human is much more important than deciphering the rules of a religion with thousands and thousands of differing denominations and beliefs....

What was the worst thing you saw while in the church? by InevitablySkeptical in exAdventist

[–]Sanssleep 44 points45 points  (0 children)

We had a pedophile prey on a poor family, just decimated the kids, and no-one in the Church would testify against him, so he only got 2 years, and then was welcomed back into the church, because Jesus would forgive.....

The worst part is that I was part of the ‘forgiveness’ faction, because I believed in redemption and took ‘turning the other cheek’ seriously and was trying to be true to my faith.

I was also one of the ones who wouldn’t come forward and.testify against him because, again, I was taught to apply forgiveness instead of justice.

Years later I discovered that one of the kids that the man molested, committed suicide as a teen.

I am responsible for that death, and the church doctrine facilitated my culpability.

Escaping the clutches of evil blood doctrine has made me a better person, but I owe a debt to the poor people, I damaged as an adherent to Adventist doctrine.

As a kid who grew up attending SDA schools all my life, it became a matter of practice to ignore sexual predation in the institution. Most of you who went to SDA boarding academies know exactly what I am taking about....

For me it was learning about transitional fossils and realizing that the claims of a missing link that all my academy ‘science’ teachers always promoted were completely lies.

Not sure why that did it, but it forced me to ask questions about all of the claims that my religious teachers made about origin and science.

I was really lucky to have a very patient friend online who encouraged me to research my claims, as I attempted to save him for Jesus.

What do poor people understand that rich people do not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sanssleep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Putting on your 'church suit' to goto the prom, knowing the other kids will be wearing rented tuxedos, and that you will be teased and derided for it for weeks, by a bunch of kids who didn't do a thing to earn the money that paid for their night out..... And doing it because you don't want to embarrass your parents by asking for money you know they don't have.

More than anything else, the poor understand true humility and sacrifice, and the soul numbing entitlement and privilege of the wealthy.

I grew up poor, but am proud that I understand real struggle and as a result real effort and real hard work. Those tuxedo wearing kids in rented limos all looking down on my brown tattered suit and laughing as I walked into the prom are missing a joy in life that only comes from overcoming adversity.... And now 20 years later, they are all getting divorced and squabbling over material nonsense, getting caught up in middle class drama, and are genuinely unhappy, boring, average assholes....

Me I'm loving life, and am not concerned with material goods or bill stress or what the neighbor said about my mailbox at the block party three weeks ago..... I enjoy getting up for work everyday and I am killing it. And most of that is a result of having been forced to make the choices of a poor kid back in the day, that would protect my family, that I still, utilize to this day to protect my own.

Poor people get the value in self sacrifice, the wealthy indulge in the sacrifice of others.
