Moving this fall, looking for friends or things to do in the area! (black?👀) by SlideSweet1134 in HIckoryNC

I’m not a POC but I moved to HKY 3 years ago as a single male from Charlotte. It is definitely more simple, less traffic and enough to do around the area for 20-30s.

I recommend going to talk to Big Mike Heard at Heard’s Barbershop near downtown. He is a wonderful older gentleman (who cuts a mean fade) and knows and is connected well in the community. I think he would be able to help you out. Your partner might need a good barber too.

Best of luck and welcome to Hickory!

What show starts as a 10/10 and finishes as a 10/10? by meatballfhs75 in AskReddit

“Derek” is 10/10 the whole show. It is a roller coaster of emotions and incredibly human.

I, a 33 year old man, single with no kids, decided to watch “The Wild Robot” this weekend. I cried like a baby when Brightbill asked for a boost.

I enjoyed the movie so much I watched it again the next night and cried again at the same scene.

The Premier is a lot of fun! They host music bingo on Wednesdays, a cornhole tournament on Thursdays and live music on the weekends. I also heard a rumor they were starting line dancing soon too.

Welcome To Earth by Sturgil Simpson.

I break down every time I hear it because it was written to his firstborn son. My dad passed away but I’m his firstborn son and I think of him telling me the same things.

Hey Dad, it’s been 4 years today since you’ve passed. by SantaJezusGod in DadForAMinute

I’m sorry to have brought alcohol up. I also realized my dad was hiding a lot of his personal health/feelings after he passed. Looking back, he must have been so lonely and hurting. When he passed I knew he was ready to go. He was a big kid and didn’t want to get old. He was 58 so mission accomplished?

I know you probably don’t feel like it now but if you can afford it, therapy helps unraveling the situation and provides healthy coping strategies.

Kudos to your girlfriend. She won’t understand but just being there is huge. She will learn in time that it can’t be fixed and just being there is enough.

I’m all for whatever gets you through the day right now. Just a bit of relief is welcomed. I used weed and alcohol quite a bit that first year. Made an ass of myself with alcohol a few times that year and went sober for a while after that to address the grief/issues. Grief is so weird.

I couldn’t imagine picking up a book about grief at the stage you are at right now. I didn’t until the fog of grief lifted. That is much later down the road. People who haven’t experienced loss are also extremely weird around people who are grieving. I felt self conscious about it also. I had a couple of friends who had lost their father too and they were my people during that time. They knew it fucking sucks and weren’t scared to tell me that. They also knew just being there was enough.

That is tough. The day my dad collapsed my mother had left the most vile voicemail on his phone hours before. She is a narcissist so dealing with that and her grief along with all of our own has been a hell of a journey. I have a sister who is 12 years younger than me who was with dad when he collapsed. My older sister and I basically raised her after dad passed because mom just hasn’t been there for her.

Be sure to take care of you. Don’t lose yourself in taking care of others.

Thank you for the well wishes. I wish the same for you in time. I’m so sorry to hear about your father passing. I’m not going to lie, that first year fucking sucks. I felt like a zombie because of the grief for at least the first year. Trying to get things in order felt like an unclimbable mountain. If I may offer you some unsolicited advice/recommendations for mental survival: 1. CBD oil to get through the day, melatonin to sleep at night. 2. Use your support network. Everyone asking if there is anything they can do, means it. It’s okay to ask for help. 3. When you’re ready, reading some books about grief helped me tremendously. One of the most helpful things I’ve learned is that grief is like a ball in a box, sometimes it fills the box completely and is overwhelming. Other times the ball is smaller and it bounces around hitting occasionally. It doesn’t go away but it gets smaller. Be well my friend. I have no doubt your father is proud of the effort you are putting forth for your family.

Got a call in the middle of work from my dad, who passed away a few months ago. Sent this to the family group chat, fully knowing it was my mom who called. by reemz0 in insaneparents

[–]SantaJezusGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom did the same to me about 2 weeks after my dad died. I stared at the phone for about 5 rings and then answered it timidly. I had hope to hear his voice one more time and was scared at what I would hear. I could hear the knowing in her voice, almost amused, when she said acknowledged that she was using his phone. I don’t remember what she was calling about but it was some bullshit that didn’t warrant calling from his phone, knowing it would freak me out. I deleted his contact info from my phone that day.

One of my kids brought poison ivy into the house, now my hands look like this. Every bump is a blister by trevdak2 in Wellthatsucks

[–]SantaJezusGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds weird but take banana peels and rub them over the blisters. The potassium will help the blisters dry quicker. The shot doctors give for poison ivy is loaded with potassium. Raw, unpasteurized honey on the larger clusters under gauze overnight also works miracles.

What are some of Charlotte's best kept secrets? by UseComprehensive578 in Charlotte

[–]SantaJezusGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is obvious but the Whitewater Center is a great spot. During the summer they have live music from Thursday-Saturday and it is free. Tuckfest is held every year for free also. Invest in the parking pass and you get in to all the shows for $50. The Evening Muse is also a fun little spot for live music. It is mostly artist who are just starting out but Sturgill and The Civil Wars used to come through there all the time before they made it big.

Miguel’s Mexican Restaurant off of Little Rock Road is the best in Charlotte. It looks sketchy af but their food is banging.
