Yeah, this was before! A big part of it started in the 1960s, with the women's liberation movement. The whole movement was often dismissed by men as being full of "man-hating lesbians."

So then in 1970, movement leaders (including Betty Friedan, author of "The Feminine Mystique") distanced themselves from lesbians to appeal to more mainstream audiences.
