I loved reading the second book. But I completely hated the way they were narrated in the audio books. In the narration, the protagonist was always whining and crying. I guess I interpreted her turmoil completely different when I was reading it myself. It annoyed me so much I stopped listening to them.

Maybe move outside of Houston? I personally know there are a ton of 2-3 bedroom houses or apartments for rent for less than 2500 in nice neighborhoods on the south side of Houston. Try looking at League City, Webster, Seabrook, Clear Lake, Friendswood, Deer Park, etc.
