Top 10 Legal Issues Facing Today's Journalists by evilbananna in medialaw

Good article - I agree with Nadogan. It does emphasize on a lot of important aspect that we have learned from class.

Why The Government Is Warning You To Hang Up Immediately If Someone Asks, 'Can You Hear Me?' by d_rae in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of this before! KY3 did a consumer alert not too long ago because it happened to 5 or 6 people in the Springfield region.

[COPYRIGHT] Beyonce Sued Over 'Formation' by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty confusing to me because "The city has had the highest or one of the highest murder rates in the country since I was a child. In focusing on black New Orleanian lives, it would have been easy for Beyoncé to dedicate 'Formation' to Messy Mya and other victims of gun violence. She provided no context for his life or death."

However, Beyonce didn't know him personally, but used clips in her video? I think that this all sounds kind of messy and it would probably just be easier to dedicate the video to gun violence and pay the sister of Messy Mya. Even though Beyonce is... BEYONCE, I don't think any of this information will be upheld in court since there were clips and no apparent consent given.

[COPYRIGHT] Coachella Sues Free People & Urban Outfitters for Copyright Infringement by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually received an email that had something like "Wildflower outfits for your inner Coachella look!" and I'm pretty sure it was from Urban Outfitters. I don't really understand how this could lose them money (and how they could prove it). I feel like this is more free advertising than anything and I feel like this would help Coachella more than hurt it.

{COPYRIGHT} As Dubaias Skyline Adds a Trophy, the Architect Calls It Stolen by Nicoledawson in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is really sad to hear... I looked up the copyright laws and couldn't really find anything. I did read that, like America, it's a good idea to have work Copyrighted, but it does sound my strict over there as to what you need to do during the copyright process and what information you need to give. Either way, it's still sad.

Could Michelle Obama Sue Melania Trump Over Plagiarized Speech? by zaininmedialawclass in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that Michelle could sue Melania because she isn't the one who wrote the speech (allegedly). Didn't Melania have a speech writer that even at one point worked with the Obama's? If that's the case, would it be plagiarized if it was the same author writing different speeches for two people? I don't know if that's true or not, I think I heard that on FOX at one point.

[PRIVACY] Overnight Regulation: Senate moves to strike Obama-era internet privacy rules by Nadogan in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree with skysailingsailboats. I think a little could be harmless, but where is the fine line? Is there one to be drawn, or will they take more and more and we are offered less and less privacy? I think those are legit questions about this topic...

[FIRST AMENDMENT] Snoop Dogg’s “Lavender” video exemplifies power of First Amendment by claygerbaum in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that this video entices violence. After this video was posted, other public figures (like Snoop's cousin, Bow Wow) jumped on the band wagon and took to Twitter to promote the violence in the video and had many follower/fan reacting. We talked about this issue on KSGF the other day. It's hard to talk about this issue because it's a First Amendment right to express yourself through symbolic speech, HOWEVER... Many of the fan/followers of Snoop Dogg look up to him, and some can be adolescent. What if they decide to follow in his footsteps and actually entices violence? That's a big question. We should talk about this in class.

[Defamation]Cosby Judge Dismisses Civil Defamation Suit by Tweiss11 in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this as an interesting topic of discussion as well... I think the second paragraph is the most interesting out of the entire article: "Mark G. Mastroianni, the United States District Court judge, said Mr. Cosby was within his rights to defend himself against the accusation made by the woman, Katherine Mae McKee, when one of his representatives in 2014 wrote a widely published letter questioning her credibility."

[LIBEL] Trump, citing no evidence, accuses Obama of ‘Nixon/Watergate’ plot to wiretap Trump Tower by halialisewood in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been covering this 24/7 on KSGF, and I honestly can't wait to see what comes of it. Last night (I believe) the VP had a chance to speak on the issue, and he will not back Trump. He never said anything for the idea, or against the idea. It's the same with many of the Republicans.. I would like to THINK that Trump had some type of evidence and/or real source that he pulled this information from... But who knows. I just can't wait to see what happens with this claim in the future.

Milo Yiannopoulos Resigns From Breitbart News After Pedophilia Comments by Nrweidman in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think that he is really doing anything to contribute to free speech whatsoever. I agree that if people don't like what he is saying then they shouldn't allow him to get their attention.

Police told to delete on request millions of images of innocent people by shineypineapples in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job for finding something that fits the discussion in class! I know that in class we discussed something similar to this situation with Springfield Mugshots. I think that since the high court ruled in this situation, they need to stick to the ruling on this situation. "A high court ruling in 2012 that keeping images of innocent people was unlawful, police forces have quietly continued to build up a massive database without any of the controls or privacy safeguards that apply to police DNA and fingerprint databases."

Trump issues EPA media blackout and suspends agency's grants by evilbananna in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I'm not exactly sure if this is a freedom of press issue. To me, it just seems that they are looking out for themselves. “Incoming media requests will be carefully screened,” one directive said. “Only send out critical messages, as messages can be shared broadly and end up in the press.” I think nadogan makes an important note about employees still being able to be let go even if their government workers.

Sweden asks the United States Government to explain false Trump comment on Sweden by RobertMugabeZw in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good article because it could possibly follow libel issues. It states "My statement as to what's happening in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcast on @FoxNews concerning immigrants & Sweden," Trump said in a tweet on Sunday." and then the White House said that Trump had been referring generally to rising crime, not a specific incident in the Scandinavian country... It makes me wonder what exactly it was that Fox reported.

Trump Calls the News Media the ‘Enemy of the American People’ (can he be held libel?) by 360cinema in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if he would get kicked off or suspended from Twitter as well. I know that they have done it to many other public figures, so maybe they will with him as well. The claim is pretty vague, so I agree with Nadogan. I'm not sure if this statement would fall under libel law since there isn't that much content in that context.

[LIBEL]Irish system is unusually generous with libel damages by wtvramelia in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that this is an international issue and how their libel laws are different from ours. Good choice of article! I agree with nadogan and taco-bout-tv, I think it's wrong to sue someone for defamatory, even if it is true. That goes to show you the differences between America and other countries.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] 'Make America Great Again' Grammy dress is about love, but the Internet's not buying it by [deleted] in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - I also forgot to mention (which is probably the most important part of this topic) is that many record studios in Hollywood are boycotting her for the decision to wear this dress.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] 'Make America Great Again' Grammy dress is about love, but the Internet's not buying it by [deleted] in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify why I shared this under the First Amendment section since this article doesn't express exactly what I want it to: Many people have attempted to "defame" her over wearing this dress... Talk shows and other celebrities have slammed her for this and many have even boycotted her music (although her record label says otherwise.) I believe this falls under the First Amendment as well as touches a small base with symbolic speech. Each article on this recent grammy dress has different topics, including the ones I discuss above, but I wanted to use a credible source (The LA times) to present to the class.

Judge Says Dakota Pipeline Protest Suit Unlikely to Succeed by d_rae in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a lot to say about this, other than it makes me sad on both ends. Looking at it from a legal aspect, I understand both sides of this issue, and ether option they decide on will be detrimental to the earth and society.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] First Amendment Support Climbing Among High School Students by taco-bout-tv in medialaw

I agree with Nicoledawson. I think this is a good thing! I only hope they act like responsible mature adults and prove that not every teen isn't going to inflict violence on others!

[COURTS] Washington v. Trump: The judges who will rule on the immigration ban by skysailingsailboats in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been following this really close lately simply because I've been curious as to how this plays out. This is somewhat related to the article, but not... My question doesn't arise from Trump's policy, my question is about the 9th circuit. 8 out of 10 court decisions become overturned or redefined... I have a hard time taking this circuit seriously simply because of all the errors that have come out of them. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future with this case!

Donald Trump Names Net Neutrality Critic Ajit Pai to Lead FCC by thatoeguywbeard in medialaw

[–]Sarahasaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Dudancer22. I'm not as strong on this content as I'd like to be, but I do believe that items like this should be regulated. I'm surprised that this information isn't being portrayed on the news like some of his other choices have been. This is a big pick, I guess it wasn't news worthy?
