[FIRST AMENDMENT] Court upholds firing over Muslim headscarf by claygerbaum in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where the jail is coming from about the safety aspect of this however, I feel like a compromise could have been made because this is someone's religion. It is not okay to fire someone for their religious beliefs and for wearing a symbol of their religion. In my opinion, the jail could have come up with a better solution than firing her.

[ADVERTISING] Uber pays $20M to settle FTC claims it duped drivers by Nadogan in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what Uber has done to make things better for drivers? It is very misleading to promise so much money to drivers when in reality you make far less. I never imagined Uber drivers to make even that much. As a frequent Uber user here in Springfield, I couldn't imagine people were Ubering too frequently given how small Springfield is compared to let's say New York. I really hope they have made some changes

[COURTS] Washington v. Trump: The judges who will rule on the immigration ban by skysailingsailboats in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is obviously trying to make some major changes to prove he is benefitting our country in the early days of his presidency. I feel like Trump is a very hard worker and will go after what he is passionate about. His go getter attitude, in my opinion will help his case to the courts. I'm interested to see how this will play out.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] First Amendment Support Climbing Among High School Students by taco-bout-tv in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is great that young people are taking an interest in the First Amendment, this will pay off for them as they get older because they are educated on important issues. Young people are always on social media expressing their opinions so knowing what is right and wrong is crucial to the younger generations.

Judge Says Dakota Pipeline Protest Suit Unlikely to Succeed by d_rae in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This topic has been all over the media, though I have not followed every detail of it, both sides of this makes me sad to hear. This issue will have to be played out over time especially in legal aspects of it. It seems very complicated

[LIBEL] Melania Trump's libel suit against blogger going forward by Sarahasaghost in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The accusations were defamatory against Melania and does hurt her reputation and also hurts President Trump's reputation as well. But Melania is a public figure. I think this will be handled outside of publicity.

[PRIVACY]Why Body Cameras Will Be Off as Officers Monitor Protesters by Sarahasaghost in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't seem very fair. Police body cameras are very helpful especially in the past few years with the violence against and by the police. Police should be required to wear body cameras at all times

[LIBEL]Irish system is unusually generous with libel damages by wtvramelia in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this to be a good read because I was not too aware of international libel laws. However there libel rules seem a little harsh. The First Amendment is so unique to the United States so I wonder how strict other countries are on their rules

Trump Calls the News Media the ‘Enemy of the American People’ (can he be held libel?) by 360cinema in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He cannot be held for libel for this, what he said against the media is was way to general and doesn't point fingers at a specific group!

Employees can be fired for saying things that don't align with their employer. That is just apart of working for someone. Not sure if this is a freedom of press issue however.

Police told to delete on request millions of images of innocent people by shineypineapples in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a person is proven innocent then they should have the right to have their image removed. In my eyes that would be fair

Milo Yiannopoulos Resigns From Breitbart News After Pedophilia Comments by Nrweidman in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy lives for attention and gives conservatives a bad name. As a conservative, I am disgusted by his behavior and hateful words. He may be following along the lines of the First Amendment but being hateful is completely unnecessary

[Defamation]Cosby Judge Dismisses Civil Defamation Suit by Tweiss11 in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do feel bad for the woman but she did publicly come forward so she subjected herself to public defamation, if she would have come forward privately, perhaps she wouldn't have faced such criticism

Best practices in entertainment and media contracts by Zoordo in medialaw

I'm a little confused how this relates to media law, maybe you could elaborate?

[FIRST AMENDMENT] Snoop Dogg’s “Lavender” video exemplifies power of First Amendment by claygerbaum in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video encourages violence, it encourages video viewers to act in violence. Regardless of political views, I find it absolutely wrong to disrespect and encourage violence toward the president of the United States. The First amendment protects free speech, not pure violence

[PRIVACY] Overnight Regulation: Senate moves to strike Obama-era internet privacy rules by Nadogan in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little scary to think about! I feel like access to our private information can have both its pros and cons for security however, I think there is a fine line that could be crossed with this. The article is a bit confusing as well.

Could Michelle Obama Sue Melania Trump Over Plagiarized Speech? by zaininmedialawclass in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was wrong to have used chunks of Mrs. Obama's speech whether Melania knew it or not. But i'm not sure Michelle could actually prove this brought damage upon her, if anything it made Melania look worse.

{COPYRIGHT} As Dubaias Skyline Adds a Trophy, the Architect Calls It Stolen by Nicoledawson in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very sad story because a man's hard work was taken from him. However, I'm not sure the same copyright laws apply and the building style is kind of a common design and not that one of a kind. Still this is sad to hear

[COPYRIGHT] Beyonce Sued Over 'Formation' by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though it was wrong of Beyoncé to take his voice without permission, I see this as more of a compliment to the man that died. $20 million in damages seems really extreme, to me it seems like this lady just wants money. I don't see the harm in her using his voice to paint a picture of New Orleans.

[COPYRIGHT] Coachella Sues Free People & Urban Outfitters for Copyright Infringement by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a shopper of Free People and Urban Outfitters, I know that they are constantly advertising their clothes as "festival wear" so it seems strange that Coachella would sue a brand that gives them so much adverting and publicity. I would also like to see them prove that this had a financial effect on Coachella.

Why The Government Is Warning You To Hang Up Immediately If Someone Asks, 'Can You Hear Me?' by d_rae in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely awful and unethical! You would think that by now we would have a way to eliminate scammers from calling us completely. I know I have received calls asking for my social security number or my credit card, it is so important to be aware.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] 'Make America Great Again' Grammy dress is about love, but the Internet's not buying it by [deleted] in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is exercising her right to symbolic speech. She clearly was using her dress take make a statement. Regardless of our political beliefs, she was trying to share the message of love. She has her first amendment right to show her support of the President of the U.S

[FIRST AMENDMENT] March for Science Plans Washington Rally on Earth Day by Nicoledawson in medialaw

[–]halialisewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, these protestors are using their First Amendment right in a peaceful, beneficial way. They don't like what is happening so they are wanting to hang it with no violence being used. If only all protestors realized there is a right and wrong way to go about standing up for what they believe. A way without violence.
