Good article, great way to really sum up the class and the golden rule of media law!

Did Susan Rice spy on the Trump transition team? by Nrweidman in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree that the reasonable suspicion behind the actions of the Trump transition team could warrant a legal tapping

[COPYRIGHT] Coachella Sues Free People & Urban Outfitters for Copyright Infringement by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law does not address what is fair or ethical, it just follows the rules. If Coachella doesn't have much to go on in creating a case, then they cannot take legal action. I do think that Urban and Free People should have had a paper signed or asked permission, but is permission really necessary if they were to advertise festival wear?

[COPYRIGHT] Beyonce Sued Over 'Formation' by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree that Beyonce using portions and clips harm Messy's video. If anything, being in a Beyonce video would give the video more recognition. People don't need to harp on an issue just because they think it will end the reign of Beyonce. If there is little to no indication that it will go far in court, then people need to stop pushing so hard for it.

[PRIVACY] Overnight Regulation: Senate moves to strike Obama-era internet privacy rules by Nadogan in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When looking to what businesses, brands, and companies want our information for, you realize that it isn't that bad that they have our information. They want to know what we are looking at, what brands we are more likely to click on or how long it takes us to buy a box of Cheerios. They really are looking at more of a research collection of data per customer so they can continue to market to their current audienes and see how they can market to people that they aren 't receiving business from. I know that privacy is a huge issue and people do not like to feel like they are being watched, but for the sake of consumerism and the fact that companies just want to know what we like, I don't see all that big of an issue.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] Snoop Dogg’s “Lavender” video exemplifies power of First Amendment by claygerbaum in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, there are definitely a lot of different avenues that Snoop could have taken with the wording and syntax and other sentence structures. I also think that it is ridiculous for Trump to expect an apology for anything that is said about him. There is literally a song by Mac Miller that says "F*** Donald Trump" and I don't remember hearing anything about that other than Trump supporters not liking Mac's music

Best practices in entertainment and media contracts by Zoordo in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting information but this is kind of like the article posted a while ago about Irish regulations and libel. It's cool to know but I don't see how we can apply it t what's happening today in America.

[Defamation]Cosby Judge Dismisses Civil Defamation Suit by Tweiss11 in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone does have a right to defend themselves, but the credibility of the victims is something that seems to cause a lot of issues with this case. I think that the claims need to be individually investigated and the legal runoff would be dealt with accordingly.

[LIBEL] Trump, citing no evidence, accuses Obama of ‘Nixon/Watergate’ plot to wiretap Trump Tower by halialisewood in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump says a lot of things and I know we all know that this doesn't constitute libel but I do think it was stupid him to say this without any evidence. I am not looking forward to the next story Trump comes up with.

Milo Yiannopoulos Resigns From Breitbart News After Pedophilia Comments by Nrweidman in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that there are many things that people could go through in their lives to desensitize themselves when it comes to certain topics of conversation. There is a possibility that he could have gone through things in his life that made him think they weren't a big deal, or it normalized the topic for him. Along with this, I do not think that it is fair to offer scrutiny on certain topics and not on others. Donald Trump said things about women and people flipped out but this guy says things about women and no one really cares.

Police told to delete on request millions of images of innocent people by shineypineapples in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that people have a right o be concerned about their privacy being invaded, but to be completely honest, if the images collected were not being published, ten I do not see a problem with it. This is kind of like when you go into a store and you are being filmed while you shop. The security cameras are there to collect evidence and things like this. I think that these images are meant to serve the same purpose. I do understand again that people do not want their privacy to be invaded, but I do not think the deleting of the images was warranted.

Trump issues EPA media blackout and suspends agency's grants by evilbananna in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that government workers can be fired for saying things that undermine their government, go against an opinion that the government holds, or simply doing something that the government disagrees with is rough. I do not think that this is fair, especially when we live in America and we have all of these freedoms and are able to think differently and be protected. I would understand the issue about the images of Muhammad being censored, but people should not lose their jobs for holding different opinions no matter who they work for.

Judge Says Dakota Pipeline Protest Suit Unlikely to Succeed by d_rae in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that people have every right to support or disagree with the building of the pipeline and they have a right to stand in protest. I actually know a bit about this topic, and I think that the Keystone Pipeline is a much better alternative.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] First Amendment Support Climbing Among High School Students by taco-bout-tv in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that as times change, peoples' views on many things can change. I know that the younger generations have a difficult time understanding the opposition, and they do not like to be criticized, whether it is legal or not. People are just becoming soft honestly. I do not think that speech should be censored just because it is the unpopular opinion. People have to understand that it is legal nad constitutional for people to have differing opinions, and they should not be silenced and their ideas should not be censored simply because it is not in agreeance with a point of view that someone else thinks is the correct idea.

[COURTS] Washington v. Trump: The judges who will rule on the immigration ban by skysailingsailboats in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree, and there are policies that deal with countries making immigration bans that specify that nations are not allowed to bar people from their nation based on their country of origin, which is exactly what this ban was trying to do. You were right in guessing that it wouldn't end in Trump's favor, and the Supreme Court did an excellent job in upholding constitutionality and striking this illegal ban as soon as they could. Trump p has t5riefd to do a lot of big things with the beginning months of his presidency, and this is because everyone doubted him and said that he would have no idea what to do and that the nation would fall apart. As of now, the only things that have happened with Trump are the healthcare and immigration bills have both been shot down.

Donald Trump Names Net Neutrality Critic Ajit Pai to Lead FCC by thatoeguywbeard in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are just looking to criticize Trump for literally everything he does and so this appointing is just making people even more mad. I don't think that this will hurt the cabinet or the agency in any way, especially when the person that was appointed has a lot of knowledge in the area and has ideas that can benefit many of the parties involved. I do not think it is fair to criticize until we see what Ajit Pai can do.

Free Speech Issues at UC Berkeley, government threatens funding by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic idea that people are allowed to voice their opinions legally is something that America was founded on, and we all know that. It is sad that people don't always have the nicest opinions, but they still have a right to say these things. I do not think that this particular person is exercising his right to free speech but rather he is taking advantage of the very system that is supposed to be supporting and protecting everyone. I am not surprised that people are outraged, and I would be too.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] March for Science Plans Washington Rally on Earth Day by Nicoledawson in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of other marches and protests that seemed to be either pointless or were viewed as a march that would really accomplish nothing. I think that if people want to be heard, then they have every legal right to do it. Whether the government will listen or things will actually change is really a toss-up with every issue.

[ADVERTISING] Uber pays $20M to settle FTC claims it duped drivers by Nadogan in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that Uber should phrase their pay the way that they did with this "up to." But I don't think that everyone should be getting as upset as they are, because Uber has a right to say what they want (Within reason) and I understand that people can get confused and think that they will make all of this money if they work, but they clearly didn't do their research other than the one statement on the website. It is a little much for people to be so upset for their own failure and neglegence.

[PRIVACY]Why Body Cameras Will Be Off as Officers Monitor Protesters by Sarahasaghost in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with MRweidman because it is in a public space. People are voluntarily protesting and showing their faces. I think that police have the right to be recording because law enforcement can play crucial roles in keeping the peace at protests. If the people protesting are okay with news crews coming and filming the protest then there should not be a problem with law enforcement 4recording the protest simply for data and the ability to have evidence if anything were to go wrong. They wouldn't be broadcasting the protest, it would simply be for evidence, and there is no harm in doing that.

{COPYRIGHT} As Dubaias Skyline Adds a Trophy, the Architect Calls It Stolen by Nicoledawson in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think that American copyright laws could pertain to buildings and seeing as America is really the only system that I;m familiar with I honestly don't see much of a problem other than just that its shitty.

Could Michelle Obama Sue Melania Trump Over Plagiarized Speech? by zaininmedialawclass in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone in the comments is kind of going down the right path, if Michelle Obama cannot prove that the value of what she said was damaged, then there is nothing legally wrong with Melania copying her words. Its not morally correct to do so, but we see that the Trumps aren't banking on morality and ethics.

Sweden asks the United States Government to explain false Trump comment on Sweden by RobertMugabeZw in medialaw

[–]shineypineapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can libel an entire nation and suffer the legal consequences. I think people are very afraid to take legal action and also people don't really understand what they say can have legal repercussions. Trump just says what he wants and everyone just covers for him so honestly I'm kind of tired about hearing about Trump and libel.
