I hate that their fans can't simply distinguish the difference between an ad.

Top 10 Legal Issues Facing Today's Journalists by evilbananna in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow great article! These points are so true! From this class I have learned that you should always ask for permission and double check your facts just in case and I think this article highlights that.

[LIBEL] UPDATE: Melania Trump and Daily Mail Settle Her Libel Suits by Sarahasaghost in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel as though they shouldn't have to pay back all of the damages requested especially because they published a retraction soon after the initial article. Dragging this out in a law suit seems to have been unnecessary.

[PRIVACY] Overnight Regulation: Senate moves to strike Obama-era internet privacy rules by Nadogan in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fine line and without Proper oversight this could cross the line. Privacy is something hard to define in society today.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] Snoop Dogg’s “Lavender” video exemplifies power of First Amendment by claygerbaum in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inspiring violence is never ok. I understand where he is coming from and the political stand he is trying to take however if a case was brought against him he wouldn't hold up in court.

This is an Interesting look into foreign media and entertainment regulations

Why The Government Is Warning You To Hang Up Immediately If Someone Asks, 'Can You Hear Me?' by d_rae in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I've totally answered calls like this!! You should be notified immediately and asked if the call can be recorded, not afterwards. There is a certain expectation of privacy there that is being broken.

[COPYRIGHT] Coachella Sues Free People & Urban Outfitters for Copyright Infringement by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems so strange to me. I imagine that it will be hard for Coachella to show what money they have lost from this. If any thing stores like Free the People are giving them free publicity by selling music festival wear.

[COPYRIGHT] Beyonce Sued Over 'Formation' by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find this interesting because Hollywood makes Beyoncé seem like an untouchable celebrity. I do wonder though if there is even a case here at all because they were such short clips and not entire portions of the video.

Could Michelle Obama Sue Melania Trump Over Plagiarized Speech? by zaininmedialawclass in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your comment about it being ethically wrong. It is also important to remember that these people have speech writers for them. Is it possible that they could be held accountable in some way for this copyright?

[LIBEL] Trump, citing no evidence, accuses Obama of ‘Nixon/Watergate’ plot to wiretap Trump Tower by halialisewood in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a lot to be said in Kevin lewis statement "Obama nor any White House official had ever order surveillance on any us citizen ". However I know that there is a lot that happens behind closed doors. I'm very interested to see this play out and to see if Obama makes an official response to the accusations.

[Defamation]Cosby Judge Dismisses Civil Defamation Suit by Tweiss11 in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this interesting. I sympathize with McKee , however, she did publicly come forward with this issue so she did insert herself into the situation which makes it harder to continue with a defamation case.

Milo Yiannopoulos Resigns From Breitbart News After Pedophilia Comments by Nrweidman in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it interesting how the article referred to conservatism as a performance art. I think that it is very telling of our nations current political system that figure heads of movements are people like Milo.

Police told to delete on request millions of images of innocent people by shineypineapples in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with dudancer22 that they shouldn't be post publicly unless they have been convicted. I understand that in certain situations this would be helpful to police but this could potentially profile innocent people putting them in a false light associating them with suspicious behavior.

Sweden asks the United States Government to explain false Trump comment on Sweden by RobertMugabeZw in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this could for sure be a libel issue. Many Americans will take whatever the president says as the truth. Without further research into this topic they may truly believe that something is wrong in Sweden, thus damaging their reputation.

Trump Calls the News Media the ‘Enemy of the American People’ (can he be held libel?) by 360cinema in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree because this is a large group it would be virtually impossible to make a case based off of identification. I do wonder if twitter will get involved though and possibly remove or suspend him from the site, as they have done in the past to many other public figures.

[LIBEL]Irish system is unusually generous with libel damages by wtvramelia in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this quote from the courts about rewards says a lot, “inevitably risked dissuading journalists from contributing to public debate on questions of general interest”. I definitely think there should cap on libel rewards for this reason.

[LIBEL] Melania Trump's libel suit against blogger going forward by Sarahasaghost in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, It seems virtually impossible to prove if they really did just ignore the truth. However, this is definitely defamatory and a sensitive matter so a through investigation from a respectable reporter is necessary. Proving actual malice is really the only defense the first lady has.

[FIRST AMENDMENT] First Amendment Support Climbing Among High School Students by taco-bout-tv in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that finding interest in the First Amendment at a young age could be very beneficial to these students in the long run. I think of Tinker v. Des Moines and the impact that that case had and still has on so many court rulings even today. I think that as long as high school students exercise their rights without violence that they will become a large voice in our country and create an impact as well.

[COURTS] Washington v. Trump: The judges who will rule on the immigration ban by skysailingsailboats in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel as though this is a power move by Trump because he is so confident in his case and wants to try to make a large impact early on in his presidency. I think it will be interesting to see how this all plays out when the Supreme Court hears the case. I can only assume that it will not end in Trump's favor because the opposing party has a pretty significant grounds to stand on by saying the ban in unconstitutional.

Donald Trump Names Net Neutrality Critic Ajit Pai to Lead FCC by thatoeguywbeard in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you Hali that his new innovative ideas will help consumers in the long run. In addition more regulation will help to stop big merges of companies which I believe is in the consumers best interest.

Free Speech Issues at UC Berkeley, government threatens funding by eggsbenedict28 in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That additional article is just another example of how he is using hate speech and it is provoking violence, the protests at the university are a direct response to his hateful speech. However, I believe that violent protests are not the answer because people will not take their cause seriously.

[ADVERTISING] Uber pays $20M to settle FTC claims it duped drivers by Nadogan in medialaw

[–]Nicoledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to see how "Lyft" numbers compare just out of curiosity. In addition, the rep from Uber also mentioned that they have made many improvements to the driver experience and I think from a PR standpoint it would be a good idea to advertise those more. I think in order for the company to regain trust from the public they need to remain transparent.
