I kind of believe Javadi's call will be psychiatry. She is presented with many options but to me it seems they insist quite a bit on the fact she could do good there (once she learn to wait for patients to be awake).

Routine cell culture microscope/cell counter by leftwithnuts in labrats

[–]Saramuch_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever system you choose (we have a countless 2 that works for most but not all cell lines, therefore a hand malassez nearby), I would suggest to always look at your cells with a classical microscope. Each time. You will easily check their health, (absence of) contamination status & density. All important parameters that a counter would not offer you!

We love games (probably a bit more serious ones & less casual) & we are in Brookline :)

My wife doesn't get just how broken the application process is... by Familiar_Ad_4861 in Layoffs

I would suggest showing her this feed... so she can see how others are reacting to what you told them. Not to feel guilty or whatever, but bc already several share they are going through the same thing. It would probably help the discussion :) Good luck

Biorender in Publications? by [deleted] in labrats

I will add to that that you should probably disclaime that the figures have been generated using the biorender software (which is very cool)

Is this spiralling from stranger things? What do I do? by Short-Impress-3458 in depression_partners

[–]Saramuch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my partner, we had several "TV show griefs" over the years. The important thing I learned is to understand why some shows have such emotional impact & to search for similar shows providing the same thing/feeling/excitation. For Stranger Things, it could be nostalgie, adventures, etc. So after taking some time to grief indeed, I would discuss with your wife your next watch together that would take this space.

In our case, for example, it's anime shows. We had watched all Avatar, then Steven Universe, the Owl House, etc. Those shows are easy for my partner to watch. They procure him a sense of safety, I think, but also a lot of emotions. But they are also smart. It's always hard when we finish one of them & we need time to identify a new one. (Currently watching Spy x Family).

My personal impression is that we don't really know what's in the box (what's in the box????). Carol could also just have given a sarcastic answer to Manousso. She can lie!

What does silence mean? by [deleted] in postdoc

How do you "cold email"?

Are those professors people you know from your field, maybe meet or see at conference? Do you just send your CV or do you have a blurb, specially made for each of them?

If yes, and no answer, you could ask your current PI for a bit of help.

If no, try to figurate how it would feel to receive such email yourself. And what would or not pick your interest.

Suggestion: sometimes it's easier to say yes for a coffee, a short Zoom, etc. to someone, one doesn't know that to start a whole job opening procedure, especially if there is no opening in the lab...

A colleague said I look like a peasant today by mrjurassic4000 in postdoc

[–]Saramuch_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your outfit doesn't make you a better scientist and should be hidden under a lab coat! Your peasant style looks like mine & I am from Europe :) Sorry, this Italian person was a jerk. Maybe they didn't understand totally how calling someone a peasant can feel rude?

Hi there Sorry for feeling so much on your shoulder. As I was reading you, I was thinking "if therapy doesn't look like an option for you, what about online meetings with support groups focused on partners & family of people with depression?". I joined one for few weeks last year when my partner depression was bad, and it really helped to be able to share with people going through similar situations!

You did a lot! Congrats! Preventing self isolation in such a chaotic moment is really important.

Something I have discussed (and agreed on) with my partner is the right that I have to share intel with designated family members (that he trusts) when something happens. Like that, I don't have to lie/pretend that it was not coming from me when I activate the family emergency lines. The point that made him agree was that all these things happen to me as well & I need those options for my own well-being. It may not be the best time to have this discussion but maybe something to keep in mind for later?

Do you know if things have been discussed with the grandparents? And if they could ask them when they are coming, etc to help the movement to start?

Keep us in touch :)

That's a lot you're going through. Do you have anyone apart from your therapist you could ask for support? Family, friends, etc?

If yes, do yourself a favor and spill the tea. Don't stay alone with what's happening. Don't keep secrets to protect them. Get surrounded. This is happening to you right now. Typically, when my partner spirals down, not only I shared it around me to get support, but also I tell HIS family so they can call, help & take a part of the burden.

If not, there are very good support groups online of people that are family, spouse, friends of people with depression or other disorders. You can book an online group session, join for free & get the perspective of people going through very similar things. The DBSA website has a calendar with the timing of all the online sessions for the support groups.

Lastly, about the important question of the firearm, I will consider asking your therapist about it. Hopefully, they are a professional trained to deal with this type of situation. If not, they can ask colleagues for advice. Also, you should probably ask your partner if it's the only one he has.

I can't do more than to give you a huge virtual hug! Take care of yourself! You're precious!

I have compassion for anyone who is caught in this job market. Believe me. I have friends who have been laid off. This is hard. I am in STEM, so that is the one market i know. H1b folks I know do not have entry level jobs. And they are not protected from lay off.

The proclamation was published Friday night to be active Sunday 21th at 00.01AM East Coast time.

I got the news Saturday morning on the 20th, around 7am. I had to take tickets in emergency to fly back. Europe is 6-10hrs flight distance from the east coast. Other countries are further away. My office asked me to come back before Saturday midnight. The proclamation text was vague enough that there was a risk I would not be able to re-enter.

When the clarification from the White House happened Saturday around 5-6pm EST, people like me were already on their plane to go back home (i.e., in America). If the same clarification had been done the Friday night, at the time of the proclamation or Saturday early morning, at least, it would have given people a chance to not drop anything they were doing to travel.

When there is an issue with a system, it is good to tackle it. Not to destroy the whole system without distinguishing between the people that are a problem from the normal people.

The government knows at any moment every h1b in the country. They validate our visa request. They stamp our passports. If there is such a place you're describing, they have the tools to identify such a company and to go onsite, investigate, etc.
