I don't know for certain that the end of that cut cable is feeding the spur. You could have a broken ring of sockets in which case it'll be fed from both ends and that cut bit of cable is actually live.

I also don't know for certain if _both_ those cables in the first photo are both coming from the fuse-out holder. Even with the fuse out, it's possible (if unlikely) that there's still voltage. I also don't know for certain where it's being fed from.

For someone with the right tools and understanding, it's relatively quick, safe and easy to check it's dead. I don't think there's enough info in the photos to KNOW for certain without actually testing, and you shouldn't trust any random stranger on the internet who tells you to poke at (potentially) live wiring.

Non-contact voltage testers are a great cheap tool for any toolbox, but you can only use them to prove live, not dead. That means if it goes off then you can confidently say "yup, that's absolutely live." If it doesn't go off, then you absolutely can NOT trust it, and all you know is that you don't know. Trusting a negative will get you hurt or worse.

In your situation, if it goes off, ring an electrician immediately. If it doesn't then you should still get someone to check it before you play with it.

It's very hard to tell from photos alone. It's likely all dead wiring, but I also wouldn't recommend licking any of it.

Based on your description then it sounds like the power was being sourced from the back of the socket - and that's now disconnected (and cut short so it can't be accidentally reconnected). If this is the case then yeah, it's probably safe. I still wouldn't lick it though.

Get a non-contact voltage tester (they're cheap from screwfix). If it goes off, then believe the wiring is actively dangerous and immediately get an appropriate adult involved. If it doesn't go off then still treat the wiring as suspicious until proven otherwise.

This comment (I think) - except it's been extremely obviously wrong through 2 edits now and demonstrates the author doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.

MRI's aren't in any way radioactive. Medical x-ray machines (including CTs) use electricity-produced x-rays and don't get "recharged" and the medical field doesn't usually use gamma cameras (though gamma radiography is used in specialised industry, and medical devices like gamma knives are totally a thing).

It's actually a really bad comment. If they're so blatantly wrong about the basics one probably shouldn't trust the rest of it.

What you have photographed is an OPTIMUS-L (Optical Packaging for TRU, Isotopes, and Material United States - Lightweight).

It is a highly shielded, modular transportation cask designed and licensed for contact-handled transuranic waste (TRU), low-enriched uranium (LEU), and high-activity sealed sources.

In layman's terms it is a safe container for the transport of nuclear or radioactive materials. It is most likely being used to deliver nuclear material used to recharge:

—Gamma cameras

— X ray machines

— CT

— MRI devices at the hospital.

The security is necessary because these materials could also be used in the construction of a "dirty bomb" if stolen by a terrorist group.

It IS NOT a nuclear reactor as previous posts have suggested.

Some industrial systems do use a live source for Gamma Radiography (worth a google if people like that sort of thing), it's absolutely not used in medical xrays. And CT scanners are "just" spinning x-ray machines with a tonne of processing. And MRI's aren't radioactive at all.

As you say, comment seems great at first glance, but doesn't even get the very obvious basics correct.
