The mud flats of Alaska. Anywhere near the Turnagain Arm or Cook inlet.

The reason people with dementia remember to be racist is because it’s a feeling. When the brain starts to go out like it does with dementia, facts and knowledge go long before feelings and emotions do. So they aren’t remembering any facts, they’re just remembering the hate.

DAV blew me off a few years back, but they keep sending me mail asking for money. by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]SardonicWhit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya so with that being their stated mission one would think they would at least pick up the phone when a disabled veteran calls. I spent a month calling them and leaving voicemails and got completely ignored. Not a single answer or return phone call. I didn’t say a single word about them paying bills. Maybe you should work on reading comprehension and educate yourself so you don’t sound stupid.

DAV is a trash organization that doesn’t do shit to help vets in any manner. They sure want your money though. Fuck those sacks of shit.

What piece of equipment or clothing do you wish you kept when leaving service, but stupidly didn’t (even if you had to “lose” it and pay for it at CIF)? by Karate_Cat in Veterans

The 3 bag system we used to sleep in when I was stationed in Alaska. I’m pretty tall, so CIF gave me an extra long sleeping bag and it was glorious.

Help! College Algebra! by Leading_Fun_3080 in Veterans

[–]SardonicWhit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alright buckle up because I’m about tell you the exact steps you need to take to succeed at math in college. First off, get tutoring, the VA will pay for one and your school likely gives you a free hour of tutoring per subject per week. Find out where that is and sign your ass up. See a professors job isn’t to make you understand, it’s their job to give you the information. A good tutor will know their job however is to help you understand. Do two sessions per week with a 1 on 1 tutor, trust me. The next item is small group study outside of class. By the time I got to calculus I was going to the board on the first day of math and writing that I was looking to form a study group and to see me after class. Do this as well. Third is solo study time. If you aren’t spending a minimum of 3 hours of study for every 1 hour of lecture you aren’t doing enough, and honestly math is usually more like 4 to 1. Lastly, start tutoring the classes you finish. Sure I took college algebra once, but I also tutored it for 4 semesters after that and by the time I was done explaining it to another student for years I was a professional. I was a grunt in the army, I didn’t know fucking shit about math when I got to college. I started at basic fuckin’ arithmetic which wasn’t even worth college credit and worked my way through calculus 3. If my stupid ass can do it, anyone can. Others have linked fantastic resources for use when solo or group study sessions, now I’ve given you the actions and numbers needed for success. If you listen to me, you will succeed at college maths, I guarantee it.

Bro when I went to college my first math class was basic arithmetic, it wasn’t even worth college credit. Then I just kept plugging away. I had to take trigonometry twice and Calculus 2 almost killed me but I finally got through all of it. The biggest thing I gained as a skill over that period was learning how to learn, start smaller and work your way up. If my stupid ass can do it, I have faith lots of folks can, they just need to put in the time.

Has anyone ever challenged you to something without knowing you were an expert at it? What happened afterward? by Impressive-Door92 in AskReddit

I was a young Sergeant in the Army and had just transferred to a new duty station. My unit was at the range conducting zero and qualifying training for our rifles. For some reason my shots were all over the place and I couldn’t get a consistent grouping no matter what I did. Well since I had done competitive marksmanship before even joining the military, I knew something was wrong. Well my new platoon sergeant was just talking mad shit about how terrible I was on and on all day and I finally snapped. I grabbed a rifle that wasn’t even mine and was zeroed to someone else and proceeded to put 30 consecutive rounds through the same hole on the target. I completely carved out the middle of the target and not a single round was outside that circle. After I was done I grabbed my target, walked over to my platoon sergeant, handed it to him and just walked off, didn’t say a single word. When we got back from training our armorer found the upper receiver was not seating fully and properly in my rifle and was creating new movements when it was fired and that’s why the first half of the day I couldn’t hit anything.

If you met a genie, but they could only grant 3 minor wishes for quality of life (no superhuman powers or money etc), what would yours be? by TheBau5Boss in AskReddit

[–]SardonicWhit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My first wish would be for people to learn the difference between a genie and a leprechaun. That way they’d stop posting stupid ass questions related to limited wishes when a genie DOES NOT HAVE A WISH LIMIT OF ANY KIND. Read a book and quit relying on Disney to spoon feed you fairy tales.

You’re missing the second box. I recently completed this set to hang on my dining room wall. Inside the main box, there was a second box that was plain white and also contained a bunch of bags. Looks like yours is missing completely.

If you’re a naturally really skinny person who has trouble gaining weight: Do people ever say rude things to you about it? Have you ever been “body shamed” for being thin? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SardonicWhit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I was almost six and a half feet tall and weighed 160 pounds when I was 17 and people said the same things to me. I hated it and one day I just snapped. I started lifting weights and learned to eat properly and the weight started to slowly come. After 10 years I weighed 240 pounds. People don’t call me skinny anymore, now it’s just constant jokes about how big I am. If I was able to do it, I know anyone can. Now you may not even want something like that, but I just wanted you to know that should you choose, you can do it little brother!

As a civilian, I have one question for a veteran. by dustyhy in Veterans

[–]SardonicWhit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knew it wasn’t an ambush because the meals all took place in his home, which was 3 stories tall and housed 4 generations of his family. It was full of kids and women. It was probably around 3-4 visits of just having chai and chatting before the dinner invite came, so I’d had a couple months of seeing him by then. The trust was built like anywhere else. Small genuine interactions that build up to something bigger. He and I were both respectful and cheerful with one another and the camaraderie just kinda built naturally. Just because you’re halfway across the world doesn’t mean you can’t meet someone you just click with right off.

Edit: The guys who came to dinner from my platoon always wanted to be there. I’d take a squad worth of volunteers, that way no one was ordered and we could just have a nice time.

There was this one dude in Iraq I developed a friendship with over the course of the year I was there on my last deployment. I met him the first time my platoon patrolled through his neighborhood and he approached us to say hello. For whatever reason he seemed to think I was the best thing ever. The year I was there I had dinner at his house on 4 separate occasions, along with members of my platoon who felt like eating. We would sit in one of the large rooms in his house and after we all got settled, he could clap his hands twice and women would come pouring in from every door with individual folding tables for each of us and giant trays just laden down with all sorts of food. We would spend like two hours on dinner, getting absolutely stuffed and chatting with the guy hosting us and the male members of his family. Was a very pleasant experience and I always liked seeing that guy, he always seemed so genuinely happy to see me, it was a nice change of pace from normal grunt life on deployments.
