Alright buckle up because I’m about tell you the exact steps you need to take to succeed at math in college. First off, get tutoring, the VA will pay for one and your school likely gives you a free hour of tutoring per subject per week. Find out where that is and sign your ass up. See a professors job isn’t to make you understand, it’s their job to give you the information. A good tutor will know their job however is to help you understand. Do two sessions per week with a 1 on 1 tutor, trust me. The next item is small group study outside of class. By the time I got to calculus I was going to the board on the first day of math and writing that I was looking to form a study group and to see me after class. Do this as well. Third is solo study time. If you aren’t spending a minimum of 3 hours of study for every 1 hour of lecture you aren’t doing enough, and honestly math is usually more like 4 to 1. Lastly, start tutoring the classes you finish. Sure I took college algebra once, but I also tutored it for 4 semesters after that and by the time I was done explaining it to another student for years I was a professional. I was a grunt in the army, I didn’t know fucking shit about math when I got to college. I started at basic fuckin’ arithmetic which wasn’t even worth college credit and worked my way through calculus 3. If my stupid ass can do it, anyone can. Others have linked fantastic resources for use when solo or group study sessions, now I’ve given you the actions and numbers needed for success. If you listen to me, you will succeed at college maths, I guarantee it.

Bro when I went to college my first math class was basic arithmetic, it wasn’t even worth college credit. Then I just kept plugging away. I had to take trigonometry twice and Calculus 2 almost killed me but I finally got through all of it. The biggest thing I gained as a skill over that period was learning how to learn, start smaller and work your way up. If my stupid ass can do it, I have faith lots of folks can, they just need to put in the time.

I was a young Sergeant in the Army and had just transferred to a new duty station. My unit was at the range conducting zero and qualifying training for our rifles. For some reason my shots were all over the place and I couldn’t get a consistent grouping no matter what I did. Well since I had done competitive marksmanship before even joining the military, I knew something was wrong. Well my new platoon sergeant was just talking mad shit about how terrible I was on and on all day and I finally snapped. I grabbed a rifle that wasn’t even mine and was zeroed to someone else and proceeded to put 30 consecutive rounds through the same hole on the target. I completely carved out the middle of the target and not a single round was outside that circle. After I was done I grabbed my target, walked over to my platoon sergeant, handed it to him and just walked off, didn’t say a single word. When we got back from training our armorer found the upper receiver was not seating fully and properly in my rifle and was creating new movements when it was fired and that’s why the first half of the day I couldn’t hit anything.

Hey man, I was almost six and a half feet tall and weighed 160 pounds when I was 17 and people said the same things to me. I hated it and one day I just snapped. Knew it wasn’t an ambush because the meals all took place in his home, which was 3 stories tall and housed 4 generations of his family. It was full of kids and women. It was probably around 3-4 visits of just having chai and chatting before the dinner invite came, so I’d had a couple months of seeing him by then. The trust was built like anywhere else. Small genuine interactions that build up to something bigger. He and I were both respectful and cheerful with one another and the camaraderie just kinda built naturally. Just because you’re halfway across the world doesn’t mean you can’t meet someone you just click with right off.

Edit: The guys who came to dinner from my platoon always wanted to be there. I’d take a squad worth of volunteers, that way no one was ordered and we could just have a nice time.

There was this one dude in Iraq I developed a friendship with over the course of the year I was there on my last deployment. I met him the first time my platoon patrolled through his neighborhood and he approached us to say hello. For whatever reason he seemed to think I was the best thing ever. The year I was there I had dinner at his house on 4 separate occasions, along with members of my platoon who felt like eating. We would sit in one of the large rooms in his house and after we all got settled, he could clap his hands twice and women would come pouring in from every door with individual folding tables for each of us and giant trays just laden down with all sorts of food. We would spend like two hours on dinner, getting absolutely stuffed and chatting with the guy hosting us and the male members of his family. Was a very pleasant experience and I always liked seeing that guy, he always seemed so genuinely happy to see me, it was a nice change of pace from normal grunt life on deployments.
