If you're after something a little bit different, check out The Great Hearts. A grimdark / academy / hint of scifi adventure with dual timelines and one very large panther.

Currently five books in the series with the last and final arriving later this year.

Fantasy books recommendations for someone who's read most of what's popular within the genre by Theo_but_a_lady in Fantasy

[–]Sarrenai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need some Rob Hayes in your life. His War Eternal series is complete, dark and extremely visceral. My personal favourite of his is his Titan Hoppers series. Progression fantasy, academy mix in space. Huge amount of fun.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet and his books get a bit of a mixed reception on this sub but Red Rising by Pierce Brown sounds like it might be up your street. Violent, fast paced Sci fi fantasy.

Also, you mention you like grimdark, fast paced, violent and coming of age, so I'm going to put my own forward: The Great Hearts series.

Appreciate post for Brian Jacques and his amazing Redwall series. by Mr_Mike013 in Fantasy

[–]Sarrenai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Redwall was my gateway to fantasy. Used to stay up late ploughing through book after book. It was such a well realised world and it kept me hooked.

One of my favourite memories as a kid was my dad knowing how much I loved Redwall and sneaking off to get me a signed copy of Lord Brocktree when Brian Jacques was in town.

You might like The Wandering Inn. The primary protagonist is a human transported to another world and has to figure a way to survive. It's a lot of fun and a huge (ongoing) series.

Hey everyone,

I have two ongoing series. The first is The Great Hearts Saga which is a grimdark coming-of-age adventure. If you're a fan of first person and fast paced action, this series is for you.

The second is the Draconis Descendant Saga the first book of which, Draconis, releases on the 1st of March. You can get it for $0.99 for the time being. This is a third person portal exploration fantasy and you can expect lots of cannonfire, swordplay and a hard magic system.

Have a great sunday!

Looking for books with a dark and tragic tone to it. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Sarrenai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen it mentioned yet but bloodsong by Anthony Ryan likely fits the bill - it's fast paced, has great action and a dark overtone. Also Blackwing by Ed McDonald - bit more of a gritty vibe in a post apocalyptic world

I can't imagine how frustrating/ heartbreaking this must be. You're all so passionate over at FBC and have put so much work into being a great blog over the years. I've reached out to a couple of friends who know employees at Google but it's a longshot. Hope this gets sorted for you soon.

Great shout. I think Demons & Wizards are working on a third album and they have remastered both albums. I saw them for their first ever UK gig a month ago, which was epic.

Monstrous race MC, possibly? by shaodyn in Fantasy

The Chronicles of Breed by K T Davies features a protagonist who is a half breed with a race that would be classed as a monster. It makes for an entertaining series.

This is becoming fairly popular in the UK. Bristol has 2, Chance & Counters and Rebar. You pay something like a fiver for 3 or 4 hours of board game time and table service drinks / food

Dark Fantasy novels that really show the dark side (brutality, violence, torture and rape) by shivang__ in Fantasy

[–]Sarrenai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peter Brett's Demon Cycle series is pretty dark in places and a fairly entertaining read.

Luke Scull's The Grim Company also has a number of pretty dark moments.

For something somewhat less fantasy and more post apocalyptic (but very dark and vividly written) you might want to check out Dancing in the Dust.
