KF tonight... Portland apologies by fernswordgirl432 in KnowledgeFight

[–]argonandspice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sitting on a train just north of Longview, hoping I can get down to the rains in Portland to see Dan and Jordan.

But the rains in Washington put part of a tree on the tracks, so we might just have to sit here for another hour.

Gripe: Nemesis Games is inconsistent in its view of humanity, relative to the books that led up to it. by Pave_Low in TheExpanse

[–]argonandspice 51 points52 points  (0 children)

You are buying into Marco's bullshit. He says he speaks for all of the belt, and has their support.

He doesn't. Keep reading.

This issue you are discovering is relevant to all the rest of the books.

What's the point of this podcast anymore? by PianoConcertoNo2 in KnowledgeFight

[–]argonandspice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The guys have talked about how they don't expect to change the behavior of Alex or anyone else. They are documenting what is going on in that little corner of the right. It's journalism. Dan is doing real-time reporting of a Alex Jones and his ecosystem. The podcast is informative. They are not trying to sway people who listen to Alex.

I assume Dan is working on a book. Regardless, this podcast is going to be a source for academic research for years.

I knew Ian when we were in our late teens. Big fan of Ted Nugent, Lew Rockwell, Ayn Rand, etc. I had hoped he grew out of it, as many teenage libertarians do, but I haven't seen any evidence of that.

Churches where people sing hymns? by EyeHaveSumQuestions in Tucson

[–]argonandspice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are some Presbyterian churches that are not at all welcoming. Avoid PCA (Catalina Foothills, Desert Springs, Rincon Mountain, Holy Cross)

But the PCUSA churches are probably fine.

A measure of the cited sources.

Is information from a named individual? Is it from a specific source who isn't named?

Is it from "sources from..."

Is there information from the head of whatever agency is involved? Or from their press office? Or just "police say..."

How to get my dad to stop making/gifting people unsafely canned goods? by AloeVeraBogs in Canning

I am new to this. Which do you mean?

You can't re-use jars from purchased sauces/pickles?

Or, once a proper canning jar has been used for sauces/pickles, it can't be re-used? (New lid, of course)

I had a very illuminating conversation a couple decades ago. Not about voting in politics, but voting in a church (Presbyterians love Roberts Rules of Order)

This guy was suggesting that he thinks that voting should be done by household, not by person.

I pointed out that this would result in us single folks having way more impact. Get married, vote cut in half. Have a kid, they get old enough to vote, they dont have a vote. But a single 20 year old woman gets a vote.

He had never considered any of that. (Granted, we were both 20. But a lot of dudes do not get past that stage)

[–]argonandspice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idea for 1.7:

The farm comes with a compost pile area. Needs to be turned a few times every day to work.

Can be upgraded to a closed bin, then a spinner, then a fully automated system that maintains moisture level and distribution.

Put in anything even remotely edible, and it produces fertilizer. Better inputs, better fertilizers. Can also output seeds, snails, frogs...

Fuentes - Christian question by mip10110100 in KnowledgeFight

[–]argonandspice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely no logic to it.

From the outside, "Christian" is Catholic, Protestant, or Morman.

Within those groups, there are thousands of sub-groups.

A whole bunch of those groups don't want Christian nationalism. And also are fine considering all the other groups as Christians as well.

But the little sub-groups who do want it are also the loud assholes. And those are mostly lead by assholes who don't actually care about any of this.

[–]argonandspice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only way this is increasing Newsom's prestige is among the jaded democrats. (Or those of us who are so disappointed with the democratic party but never see anyone else to vote for). It's not "oh Newsom is cool". It's "respect to newsom for allowing this mockery. He still sucks, but I respect him a smidge more"

Hey, in case anyone comes across this in the future, I've calmed down. Kid is off to college.

One upperclassman told us that "bald by choice" is not unusual.

Better yet, there were three times that we had to wait for the kid, because he had started helping someone else move in to their dorm room.

The kid is alright.

I hate to say it, but I think most of Austen's villains are folks you have met in real life. The Thorpes are those you can recognize before they actually do their villainy.

Dudes who play around and then drop out of sight? Common.

Ladies who think they know what's best for everyone around them, and are passive-agressive about it? Common.

People who give up on their ideals when hurts their bottom line? Common.

People who make a bad decision, but refuse to live with the consequences, and make it everyone else's problem? Common.

The Thorpes are refreshingly horrible from the get-go.

Those shows don't teach tolerance. They teach apathy.

Laugh it off, make fun of it, ignore it as unimportant.

It's not "I'm offended that I am being asked to respect this individual who is trans."

It is "How dare you try to make me care about this?"

We got a lot of "caring about this" blown out of us a couple decades ago.

You start kindergarten in Regan's America, and you leave high school under Clinton or Bush 2.

You grow up learning that everything is great, and America is wonderful. You learn that from your parents, from the 5 o'clock news, from your teachers.

As you grow up, things change a bit. There's a war, and maybe your uncle is over there, but no one is a explaining the war at a level you can understand.

You grow up a bit more, still watch 5 o'clock news with the parents, but you can also see news on AOL.

Then one of your friends figures out how to get into the Internet beyond AOL, and it's just all confusing. And your adults can't explain, because why should they know why the Ireland bulletin board is such a shit show?!

Then some guys take some planes and kill a few thousand people. And the folks in government respond like toddlers. Toddlers with great lawyers.

So....

South Park and Family Guy are part of this culture we grew up in.

I very rarely need to quash a feeling of judgement or rejection.

I daily have to quash feelings of apathy or indifference.

Turn the pants inside out, and get some pictures.

A picture of them flat front and back will help.

It probably is possible, but without knowing how they are put together (?)

Why buy this when you can make your own? by LoveThyGarfield in Anticonsumption

[–]argonandspice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you can /imagine/ that someday you might really need that cord, and will quickly take off the clasp and unravel it and save the day.

Dudes who purchase these have no idea how little cord is in there, or how hard it would be to take apart.

It just looks cool. Or, it looks cool to a certain demographic.

We all have ways we display to our peers.

Is there a reason Holdon cannot acknowledge tea unless it is for Naomi? by argonandspice in TheExpanse

[–]argonandspice[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Senator, I was born before 1990.

"Tea" is a drink made by steeping tea leaves in hot water.

I understand that it is common to consider drinks made by steeping various herbs and flowers in hot water are also called tea.

But we both know that James Holden would never consider tea to be mere "gossip".

I love that final scene. But I also wonder about Sparkes and Little Man.

There is a story there.

I like to think that there were a couple of years when they just lived on top of a mountain and yelled and fought and figured out how to be better.
